Was thinking about this earlier. I'm not talking about worst as in the worst wrestler to win the tourney, but really one guy who won the tournament and never really went on to do anything afterwards with the title. My vote goes to Billy Gunn. He never even won a singles title until many years after he won the tournament, and he went back to tagging with Road Dogg again less than a year after winning it in 1999. The WWF seemed to be obsessed with him being a top heel in the company at the time, and it just never panned out. BTW, I'm not counting any of the kings who won as parts of the reincarnations of the tournament after it stopped being a regular PPV in 2002. He won the Intercontinental Championship in November 2000, so no not "many years" after. I agree in the sense he wasn't a great KOTR, but I don't think it was that bad. Mabel was awful! I seriously doubt he was supposed to be the "top heel" either. Triple H was the top heel at that time, so Gunn may have been booked to become a second or third, because we still had Vince and Undertaker floating around at that time too. I know OP said not counting the later KOTRs, but since some are counting Sheamus and Barrett, I'm surprised no-one has mentioned William Regal. He won the tournament in like October/November 2008? or something, and even became the on screen authority figure on Raw straight after, but then got suspended at the same time and was dropped like a stone. Anyone remember YOUMANGA? Slightly changing the OT, I think Kurt was an awesome KOTR.

Billy Gunn was one of my favorite wrestlers in 99.

I know this is the classic thread but come on.....it HAS to be Barrett.
The closest to him in terms of doing NOTHING with your win is Shamrock or Gunn....

Eh Mabel? End of discussion. Though Billy Gunn for me was the most disappointing. I thought he was destined for stardom when i was younger. I thought 'The One' Billy Gunn was great I kinda think it happened to quickly for him. He won the KOTR and then almost immediately started a feud with The Rock who was clearly miles ahead of him at the time. If they maybe took their time and let him win the IC belt instead of letting him feud with their hottest star and built him up...maybe just maybe he could have worked... Still not sure he was on par with the great promo workers of that era to stand a chance...

Mabel. Honestly King Barrett isn't much better right now.

Sounds like we are pretty much saying Shamrock, Billy, and Mabel. (Barrett doesn't count)
I'm going to vote Shamrock. Mabel at least made it somewhat important to his character, and even if Billy flopped, he was still a good choice on paper, and had the most potential. Billy, might of had lesser mic skills, but Shamrock had none and almost nothing going for him outside of being a legit badass.

I don't count anybody after 2002. from 1993-2002 it was used a platform to springboard talent. In some cases very successfully......in others? not so much.
Bret, Owen, Mabel, Austin, HHH, Angle, Edge & Brock all received great rubs from it OR had their careers pushed along nicely.
Shamrock & Billy? It didn't do zip for.

Then again it should be noted that the contenders for the worst are Shamrock and Gunn who happened to win the KotR when the roster was at its most stacked and there was nowhere for them to go. The KotR was meant to elevate talent but there was simply no room for them.

Billy.
At least Mabel got a push and what not
Billy Gunn was never going to go anywhere as a singles competitor. He came out once in his trunks and he had a thong on with the ass meshed over. Really? GTFO
