I remember seeing RA9 at retail and the only one I wanted was Kane, but I remember rarely coming across Austin, and I never understood why they put this label on the front of the packaging. What's the story on it? Like, why was there a short run produced or why was it advertised as his possible last figure? Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't classic superstars around at this point in at least series 1? Would it be for story line purposes when Austin lost at Survivor Series 03? Because he was back in 04 for WrestleMania XX as an enforcer. Any info?

According to this WF article from 2004-05, Austin was legitimately a short-run figure that was replaced in later shipments by Booker T. I wasn't collecting at the time Ruthless Aggression Series 9 was released to stores (around July of 2004, or so I've read), so I'm not familiar with the reasons for the change/production number. I do know that RA9 came shortly after Classic Superstars Series 2, if that answers part of your question.

It was out around the time he was set to job to Coach and he walked out and I guess Jakks just assumed he'd never be back.

I've read a lot of shocking news today. This is literally the most shocking thing I've heard this week. Yes, but did the news stun you? Seriously though, Jakks wasn't always inept. They were capable of great things, details that even Mattel would miss today, but they weren't consistent. In the case of RA9 Austin, they included the detail on the back of his pants, but in the process they sacrificed the "Austin 3:16" text on the skull. I still think they made the right choice.

It was just one of the many times Austin pouted and stormed off.

Im sure it was released around the time he went off TV in 2004, so they cancelled it super late in production, so it was only available in the first wave

^ He walked away from WWE at the time (pretty sure it was due to a contract issue in this case, not creative problems) , but the figure was already in production. So they put the sticker and I suppose tried to get some sales out of the deal. I suppose it worked since I bought one when it came out even though I may not have otherwise. Booker T did in fact replace him later in the run of RA 9.

Its a pretty nice figure. I really dig the attire. I never knew the story behind this, thanks for the fun history lesson.
