Anyone remember or have any experiences with Mean Genes hotline in WCW? What a terrible way to expose the business. I mean how do you give away spoilers to your own show? What were they thinking!? I remember when I was a kid a few days before bash at the beach 96 my friend was going around saying that his uncle called the hotline and they told him that Hogan was the third man. And my friends and I didn't believe him because of course Hogan couldn't be a "bad" guy. But then at the show as soon as hogan came out my jaw dropped. I knew the moment he walked out the entrance that he wasnt there to help. But WTF, this just showed that wcw had no respect for the business or the fans and just wanted to make as much money as they could at whatever cost.

1-900-909-9900. Never dialed that number, but needless to say, the Internet put these hotlines out of business.

Online its a bunch of spoilers leaking that wwe is trying to keep secret. WCW was giving away their own results for a profit.

I always wanted to call it, just to see what it was all about. Yeah, same... my parents never let me though... probably a good decision on their part, lol.

I never called these things as a kid so im curious. Was there ever any real info from these things? or like legit news/behind the scene things that came out first from one of the various numbers you could call?? Or was it just mostly random vague b.s ?

I would guess that was more of your friend or his uncle just saying they called it and they threw out the most unbelievable name and it just turned out they were right.

The WWE posted a video with the guys who filmed the Curtain Call before Nash and Hall left the WWF. Anyways, they said they knew Hall and Nash where leaving because they called the Hotline and where told several months before it happened.

From what i recall, the hotline was mostly BS or kayfabe stories and "news" from its inception on until the early stages of the Monday Night Wars. Then it was turned into ,more or less, a daily dirtsheet type of deal with legit news. Although I'm sure i read that they threw the occssional BS story up there so they didnt give too much away on their own WCW storylines. But they did try to post news of all kinds, generally with a negative slant, on all things WWF or ECW. If however, you were online back in 95 on up, (CompuServe and AOL anyone? Lol) then you could read pretty much the same news daily on the few newsites then too. Once the internet became " a thing" this gimmick was doomed. The WWF did try their hand at this too, as did ECW. But ,in this case, the WCW hotline was the icon of hotlines. I dialed that number once in like, 95, just for giggles.........but i still remember the number 20 years later. Damn Scheme Gene

Those hotlines were a major ripoff I don't know why but I laughed really hard at this. They actually were a ripoff. You were charged by the minute. Most 1-900 hotlines cost $1.99 for the first minute and $0.50 for each additional minute. In other words it was a fad of the 1980s. Every Celebrity had one

Every Celebrity had one In early 1994, rumors began to swirl around the fledgling IWC that Hulk Hogan had met with Eric Bischoff about signing with WCW. Mean Gene mentioned having "comments from Hulk Hogan" about WCW on his hotline. A college buddy of mine couldn't resist that and made the call. He later told me that after 7 minutes of Gene talking about a variety of subjects, the recording of Gene said that he had spoken to Hulk (which may or may not have been true) and gave a rundown of what Hulk thought about the wrestlers and feuds at the time. IIRC, the call cost something like $16.50 and there was no mention of Hulk's future plans.
