I am new to customization as you guys know and last night I ran into a HUGE problem and I need your help! I finished painting a custom for my son for his Christmas and I sprayed it with a clear coat, I used Krylon UV-Resistant clear for acrylics. I used this on a sample body a couple days ago just to see how it reacted on the plastic and paints and it worked fine but this time it almost ruined the work?!? I sprayed it and let it dry, a few minutes later I came back and noticed the body was an off color, it is a Matte finish but it left the body with a whitish film looking affect. The trunks are off, some parts are fine the others look really warn down because of the affect. The torso is the same except the flesh part really looks bad. It also had a burning plastic smell to it? The smell wore off but the affect didn't After leaving it all last night to dry I woke up this morning hoping it would somehow work itself out but no luck smh. I checked the head, boots and arms and all but the arms came out good. The arms have that same worn/whitish look to it. Can you guys help me with what I could do? Can I put a layer of fresh paint over the clear coat then try to coat it again? Am I screwed? What can I use because I am trying to do another custom for him that is going to require painting. I do want to use a protection coat because I am making them so my son can play with these guys or else I would've just left them as is. You can see the difference where I circled The head came out really good. Help me fellas

I don't see the problem here. look at his trunks, you see how the right side is different than the left? That's not lighting, that's the way the coating left it. Same with the torso and shoulder (black) variation. The arms also, the ones on the basic Balor are darker compared to the ones I painted, it's not the glare of the flash or lights, it's the coating that did that.

Also the fleshy part of the abs looks like it was stripped of it's shine compared to the non-painted part of the shoulder area. The shoulder area has it's shine.
Do you know if you can paint over the clear coat and try to reseal it back?

Here's a pic of his back. The area that is circled in yellow, look at the difference where I used the arrow. The dark shiny (black painted)area compared to the "worn black" look also the A & B. You see how the A part still has it's glossy peach color while the B area is a pale peach, that's that the Krylon did to the figure.

i've had something similar happen but it was more of white-dusting kind of effect. i don't know why it happened. all i can suggest is that you paint everything that was impacted again, go to hobby lobby or a nerdshop and pick up some of this: i haven't had any issues with this so far(fingers crossed).

Can I paint right over the existing clear coat or should I soapy wash or sand it down first before painting it again? I'm deff buying that I also saw 2 more Testors carry, or this one THANKS MAN!!!

K, I'm going to paint the acrylics over. Do you know any good flesh tone acrylics? I'm debating if I should try painting the damaged areas on the abs and lower back but I'm intimidated lol. I also went ahead an ordered that clear coat you recommended off Amazon Thanks! Also thanks a ton man! You really helped me out alot!

Dude, just answered your question on the Fwoosh too. I mentioned another process that may work out for you too, but like said above, Testor's Dullcote is your friend in the future for this sort of thing.
I can repost my answer over here if you like?

Cool man, yeah I replied there too. Glad I could be of assistance!
Someone else said you should sand the paint down to avoid it being rubbed off in the joints, and from the areas that need it - I wouldn't bother at all. It will only cause more things to sort out, and take longer.
You could just go for a few touch ups on the black areas, leave for a day and then Testor's Dullcote it - then BOOM it'll be ready to offer to your son.
Have fun!

Quick question, how many coats should I spray on it for a better protection?

i'd do 2 coats. any more and the figure will get become super matte/flat/dull and it looks kinda odd(especially when next to untouched mattel figures). so you might want to avoid that.
when i do the dull coat, i like for there to be about 18 inches between the figure and the can. if you get too close you might over-saturate the figure and that can lead to paint running. too far and you're just wasting your time and product.
and i do a general kind of fog blast... that sounds ridiculous. i try to spray and simultaneously wave the can around the figure, created a kind of... fog. i never stop spraying on the figure. i do a pass and stop spraying once i've gone past the figure.
oh, and the paint that matches(kinda) is model masters TAN(also available at hobby lobby). it's not an exact match but it's pretty close without having to do any mixing of your own.
sorry if any of that's confusing. it what's worked for me. hopefully it does for you, too.

It's all good now. I've coated them at least once daily since Friday.
Saturday I went to a Hobby Lobby and bought a can of Testors Gloss(for Demon Balor and Wolfpack Scott Hall), a can of Lackluster (for regular Balor) and found a can of Testors Wet Look Clear Michaels for Adrian Neville. They are looking really good!
I went by at lunch to put one last coating, tonight when I get back I'll put them together and take some pics and finally upload them.

You need to use a wash coatfirst with the paint to make sure to paint very smooth wash code is probably one fourth water and three fourths of the paint in addition to that I see the problem may have occurred because the spray at the end was too close to the figure and it was not shake it up properly I don't think it was a brand of the spray problem I just don't think of shake it up completely

I'm no paint expert but as soon as I spray my dealer I put a hair dryer on warm low and give it a nice cure
I've run into the white film before but after I started using the warm air immediately after I haven't seen any yet
