So I just got from home about an hour ago and I've spent most of that time curled up in a ball in the corner crying. Why? What three words could break Shawn down so much that WF can't even do to him? "Jury Duty Summons" I know a lot of you are too young for duty. But there's plenty Americans here who are old enough to either be called upon or already have been. Now I'm a grad student for History. I'm an elected official in the state of PA. I've done plenty of legal studies while pursuing my undergraduate degree. I understand the need for a trial by jury and why citizens are called upon. Doesn't mean I'm happy about it in the ing slightest. Anyone else ever get that ing dreaded letter?

I got it once last year, went to it and my case was settled so I was able to leave. I hope to never see that damn letter again though.

Not yet. Both of my brothers have though, so it's only a matter of time.

You poor sod...I hate it too; getting called up FIVE TIMES in seven years frustrated the hell out of me. It's so inconvenient; that's what I can't wrap my head around...times where I've been involved with time-consuming projects at work or I'm the only one who can do something - and that's the time I get the callup. I've gotten out of them purely due to work, though the most recent time I wasn't so lucky. I lost a fair chunk of my weekly wage too. I feel your pain, boss man.

I have been called on twice. The most recent was for two weeks and I never got close to being on a jury, so it was a lot of sitting around.
The first time, it was for the Grand Jury and I was selected Foreman. We sat and listened to the Prosecutor's case on each version and decided it they had enough evidence to proceed with the case against the accused party. In 95% of the cases, it was and we voted for the Prosecutor to proceed. I would do it for a full time job if it paid enough as I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Happened to me last year. Luckily for me after waiting only 1 hour, the case got adjourned! Exempt for the next 8 years and still got paid! I'm in NEW YORK so I don't know if it varies by state.

I don't have a GREAT job, but it's over $1,000 a month and the way they pay jurors should I be selected would come no where near what I make even in a week, depending on how long the trial would last. The worst part of it is that Allegheny County where I live (Pittsburgh for those who don't know the counties) does not compensate jurors for travel or for parking in the courthouse lot. And the courthouse is dead in the middle of the city so it's roughly $30 a day at an outside lot, $25 a day for the Allegheny County Courthouse lot and they don't reimburse. So in top of potentially garbage pay and essentially losing money on parking if selected...I'm doing the county a ing service. The least these asshats could do is comp for parking. I understand the lot is also used for lawyers/defendants/families and the like, but they're there for a totally different reason. I'm livid.

Obviously it is different everywhere, but parking is $8 here and you get something like $12 a day if I remember correctly. Also, if your employer is not going to pay you while you are there, you can claim hardship as an excuse not to serve. There is also a rule that the employer can claim what you make if they are paying you in full for your time off, but most do not do that knowing the parking cost.

LMFAO I was scared for you that someone was dying or something.. I know how you feel though jury duty sucks. I've actually wanted to get on a jury before but every time I would go I'd not have to appear at the court after calling a couple times or would just wait ALL ing day at the court house never once even being interviewed.. So now even though I'd be interested in being on a jury I hope I don't get that letter because the same sh*t will likely happen.

Twice. First time the juror line said I didn't have to report.
Second time not so lucky. Funny how they tell you to dress like you would for an interview, I think I was the only schmuck that was actually dressed. Sure enough I was there all day and didn't get picked.

I hate getting that notice. Here in the boonies of NJ, there are a different set of numbers on each summons. The higher the number, the less chance you will be chosen. You have to call the Friday before the trial date to see if you qualify. I only had to actually report to the courthouse once. And right before they were set to go to trial, they decided to settle out of court. I know it sucks, but it's part of the judicial system.

"I have been trying to get on jury duty every year since I was 18 years old. To get to go sit in an air conditioned room, downtown, judging people, while my lunch is paid for...that is the life."
...but seriously. That's the drizzling sh*ts, man. My brother got called and selected a few years back and it seemed like for that two week some odd stretch, nothing went right for him. I've never been called, but fortunately I'm such a local news junkie that odds are I'd probably already know too much about any case that would take any significant amount of time away from me.
I'd probably still just hang myself or something though.

I'm 22 and have never been called, thank god.
I'm not even registered to vote. Not that that exempts me from getting called up but I feel like it helps my odds of not getting called up.

Ive been summoned 3 times. The process was awful.
I just tryed to be as objective to as many things as possible in the interviewing process.
I presented myself as having extreme morals.
Never got through whole process and sent home the first day.
Good luck man

The trial that I was summoned for got postponed so I never had to actually go. There was a part of me that was kind of interested, seeing as how I like courtroom dramas and was hoping a lawyer would just snap ala Al Pacino in "...And Justice For All", but it was going to be a four month murder trial so I got very fortunate. I know people criticized the jury in the OJ trial but look at it from their perspective; they just wanted that to end.

If you have a collection of wrestling figures, bring them with you in a box. Every time you're asked a question just start taking about your toys. You'll be enjoying lunch at home.
