So I randomly watched HBK/Austin at WM earlier and after Tyson knocks out HBK, he's shown on camera clear as day chewing on gum.
Was that an accident or Shawn just being 90s Shawn?

I've heard some weird stories about HBK back in the day, so it wouldn't surprise me if it was just ass Michaels being ass Michaels and not giving a crap, but I've also heard that the reason wrestlers chew gum is because it helps them with their timing for match length and for certain events in matches. Not sure if that's true, it was just one of those random "Insider" videos on YouTube, but neither would surprise me.

I am a huge Shawn Michaels fan, consider him to be the greatest of all time from an in ring point of view, but back then he was an unprofessional douche bag who expected everyone to do what he wanted to do and would throw a hissy fit if he did not get his own way. Unless you were one of his good buddies he sounded like a  ing nightmare to work with and be around. |

well, this is the match that he wasn't willing to do the job for until he saw undertaker taping up his wrists and staring at him backstage menacingly. so his attitude going into this was known to be garbage, increasing the likelihood that he was just being a douchebag chewing the gum.
michaels was also a notorious drug addict with a particular taste for prescriptions. stimulants can cause over activity of the jaw and there's a good chance shawn used gum to help with the over stimulating effects of drugs. but that's just a possible reason.

I think that story gets blown out of proportion too, but I may be wrong. I know Taker would have pounded him had he not done the job, but after hearing from both sides, I don't think Taker ever went to Shawn with his hands taped up and threaten him. I think he made it known throughout the lockerroom what would happen, but people make it seem like Taker cornered him and threatened his life. Plus I doubt Taker really needed his hands taped up since he was one of the baddest dudes back there.
But that's my take, others may know more. I just know what I've heard from watching their shoots and hearing them on podcasts.

To be fair, you could probably find several matches with Shawn chewing gum while laying flat on his back in the ring.
And I don't think it's a big deal. It's like someone taking a finisher and then immediately after the three count they roll out of the ring. Like oh okay you can't kick out or anything but you can roll 4 times to get out of the ring?

I can't speak for HBK, but as someone who also has had broken bones in my back, I would sometimes chew gum at work to help me ignore the pain. Keeps your mind off of it sorta thing. But if we found out it was just Shawn being Shawn, I wouldn't be surprised either.

The story I heard was that he chewed the gum so he'd always have spit in his mouth. so that way,when he took a shot to the face, the spit would go flying. Watch his matches post 1992 or 1993, and when he takes a punch to the mouth or a kick, he almost always spits in the air.

On the gum: Gum is a way to stop grinding your teeth or over clenching them due to pain. HBK just had a grueling match on an injured back then did big back bump to sell the TKO. I always thought of the gum chewing as a coping mechanism.
On HBK/Taker: The biggest issue I have always had with this angle is what about Austin? If HBK started acting out during the match does anyone believe Austin wouldn't have put a knee into Shawn's back and remind him of how bad the situation was? If Taker talked to anyone it had to be Austin to remind him the point of the match was to become the man and maybe that would mean having to force HBK to do the job.

Im sure he was. I read in his autobiography that he was pissed about them laying the austin shirt on him so possibly just to be a dick but not sure

Owen was good for stuff like that too -though,granted,his were mostly at house shows. He'd get pinned,then immediately get up and run to the back. Lots of stories of guys putting him in submission holds, and he'd pretend to be smoking an imaginary cigarette ,yawn,or crack his knuckles while in the hold. Sometimes he'd just sit/lay there with a completely blank expression on his face! But he did this to rib the boys, not a malicious act to make someone intentionally look bad.
