So last night after work, the wife asked me to stop and get a half gallon of milk and a bag of Fritos. I stopped at Walmart and grabbed both items and I headed to the checkout line. The woman that was already there and was loading the conveyor belt had a full cart. It was obvious she was doing her weekly grocery shopping. She gets everything out of the cart and looks at me and sees that I have two items and then turns away and pretends to not notice.
This got me thinking...do you let people cut in front of you when they have less items than you do? Would you do it if they had perishable items like ice cream?
I'm not an impatient person and didn't mind waiting, but what made me laugh a little inside about the whole thing was that after she got everything rung up and paid...I moved forward, got my two items scanned, swiped my card, got my receipt and bag and STILL beat the woman out of the store. It made me wonder why it would have been an inconvenience to her to let me go first when I waited for her to finish and STILL left before she did.

Yeah, more often than not people let me cut too. It's just common courtesy.

It was Wal-Mart. That woman was probably waiting in line for 40 minutes before she got her turn.

Usually if someone is in a rush and only has 2 or 3 items I'd let them cut in front of me. But most times I don't cuz I also only have 2 or 3 items lol

Occasionally. I work in retail so I can tell if people are truly in a rush or are just being asshats so I'll make my determination by the way they're acting. But I'll also let older people go in front of me even if they have a lot more than me, let alone less. Just really depends.

I've only ever been in the situation once, and yes, I did let the other person go first.
As for the OP, if she already had her things on the conveyor belt then fair enough she continues.

This. There have been plenty of times where I walk into a store and get milk and I have to wait behind people with long orders. I rarely if ever get offered a chance to skip ahead so in turn I never let anyone go ahead of me. The exception being a really good looking woman. If I want to stare at her from behind. Otherwise it's just not happening. |

I'm the person only buying one or two things usually, and people don't let me go first ever. I don't expect them too.
There should be other lines to choose from or else it's just not your lucky day, deal with it

Yes, I do.
I'm quite polite about it and it brings out politeness in the other person that surprises me as well. Doesn't happen that often though.

That depends on how many items I have and how many items the other person has. If I had an entire cart full of stuff and the other person only had 2 things of course I'd let them go first. If I had 5 items and the other person only 4 then no.

It's very rare for me to have more items than someone but if someone is in a hurry and they ask if they can go ahead I am more than happy to oblige.

If I haven't started putting my stuff on the belt yet I usually do if they only have a couple of things. We have a small grocery store where a lot of people will let people with fewer items in front of them at times, and now I have seen people mostly older people that when they are ready to check out just go to the front of the line when the line is long and stare at people until someone let's them cut in line or another check out lane opens up and they jump in the front of that line.

I believe in Murphy´s Law, so I usually let others in front of me because it won´t make a difference, because: "Independently of the line that you are, it will always move slower than the one that is next to yours."

If I have quite a bit of groceries, then I will let the person with two or three items go in front of me.

I was in a situation like that the other day. an older lady insisted I go ahead of her, because I had a sandwich and a drink and she had a full cart of groceries. I thanked her about 5 times.
