I need a little bit of help. I recently swapped the heads from my CS wild Samoans onto 2 elite Umaga bodies and I'm unsure how to properly remove the tattoos and deco on the tights to get a proper look. Does anyone have any regular methods they use? I've never attempted a fix up before and really don't want to screw it up.

I've never customized up to that point, however, people say that acetone, the nail polish remover works great.

Goof Off, available at most hardware stores works well on everything but crotch pieces I've seen. Never tried it on a Mattel though.
The safer route is clear nail polish/clear coat, you put it on then wipe it off, wiping off the design in the process.

Put clear fingernail polish on. Let sit for a minute wipe off with a rag. Do a little bit at a time. But acetone might be the best way.

Acetone works. If you buy a can at a local hardware store or wherever, I would suggest putting a tiny bit in a small container to work out of and adding a bit of water. I do this to help make the acetone not so harsh. Also, wipe in one motion. If you rub a spot with it, it will start to eat the plastic. I actually keep a small cup of water and wipe with acetone then put the part in the water to wash the acetone off. It's a bit safer so the acetone doesn't melt the plastic.
I haven't tried it yet but I would recommend the clear nail polish. As stated, I have seen a video of it on youtube. Brush it on then wipe it off. Surely it can't be as harsh as acetone or nail polish REMOVER.

I'm a little leery of the acetone since it's going to be my first attempt. I'm gonna go with the clear coat probably tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for the advice guys!

I tried using nail polish remover and a magic eraser and it made a glue like mixture which sealed the elite figures torso and left a sticky residue that hardened. Does anyone have any advice on what went wrong or how to properly remove the paint off an elite figure without having this problem?? Any help would be appreciated

acetone for the legs, but use clear nail polish for the crotch...using acetone on the crotch piece will make it shiny and look like crap.

I personally use Goo Off on every part of Mattels and have never had an issue. I just dip a Q-Tip in and gently wipe away whatever I need to get rid of. I also use the "water dunking" method as stated above. Any white residue will disappear with a magic eraser but I wait for my figure to dry completely before using it. I've also found that most white residue will go away once sprayed with Krylon Matte spray since it's just a haze in the clear coat.

Try brasso.
If macho man can use it to remove the plating from the intercontinental title, it'll take the tattoos off a figure.

Those customs look great! The Samoans and others look like a professional grade product, very nicely done!
I just bought a bottle of Goof Off at the grocery store, and am excited to see how it will deal with the print tattoos and painted back tattoo on a Mr. Kennedy figure I have coming from ebay. The earlier posters who mentioned the stuff didn't say anything about corrosive effects on plastic, so this may be a good alternative to clear coat for beginners. I'll report back, as I'm keen to see how it will go.

Only wish they hadn't just shown a wild Samoan prototype at SDCC. It made me feel like all my work was for nothing.

Thanks a ton! I'd really like to see that Kennedy custom as I'm interested in making one myself. Only wish they hadn't just shown a wild Samoan prototype at SDCC. It made me feel like all my work was for nothing. All I can say about your Samoans is that they will be unique, and they are very well done. You won't feel so bad if the Mattel models are not as well done as your own. Mattel seems to get their face scans right most of the time, but they have some misses, too, which will make you glad to have your customs all the more. That, and you produced your professional looking results before Mattel could even get theirs out the door, so props to you! I took a shot at Mr. Kennedy's back tattoo, and his left arm tattoo, with great results! Unfortunately, my experiment did not start out as planned, as I bought some Goof Off at the supermarket in a spray bottle, and it must not have been the right strength, because it didn't do a think to his tats. So, going to Wal Mart a short while later, I saw the Goof Off for Professional Strength, and realized that must be the stuff, in an aluminum can. But, being a moron, I saw the Goo Gone Paint Spot Remover next to it, and figured I'd try it, since it said it was safe for all plastics but acrylic, and would take off hobby paints, etc. Long story short, the Goo Gone didn't do a darn thing, just like the Goof Off I'd bought in the wrong strength. So, as the wife's clear coat was laying out, I borrowed it and used that to remove the tattoos. Honestly, they must have made Jakks with different plastics or something, because I had to apply the stuff numerous times and wipe it off, but never saw any hint of plastic melting or warping. I also used a little nail polish remover to take off any left over clear coat, and it didn't have any negative effects on the plastic, either. So, I guess my final thought is to use the clear coat, as it's cheap, or the Goof Off, if you buy the right strength the first time. I was just too lazy to go back to Wal Mart again so soon and get a can, so I went with the clear coat. Picture results follow:
