The Phillies wasted 8 innings of shutout ball from Jake Arrieta and lost it 3-2 in 14. Still sitting 63-49, so I'm not angry at that much, but still angry enough that they let ARI score twice in the bottom of the 9th to send it to extras. Seranthony Dominguez needs to be slapped upside his head for that outing. It still amazes me that this team looks like a favorite to win the championship at home and a bottom feeder on the road. Anyway, I don’t think Seranthony deserves all of the blame for this one. I don’t think they should send him down either, the guy has been pitching lights out the past few weeks. Imo Kapler taking out Rhys and Cabrera was the main issue, I think Hoskins would’ve made something happen, at least to put some insurance runs on the board. I get that Gabe Kapler is a first year manager and these mistakes are going to happen, but it was a 2-0 lead, not a 10-0 lead. More than anything I’m sick of Scott Kingery’s comical lack of production. I literally can’t find a single stat of his that impresses me. He doesn’t make great offensive plays, he doesn’t do anything spectacular on defense either. If anyone needs to be sent down to AAA it’s him. When J.P. Crawford comes back he’s gone for sure. Andrew Knapp pisses me off too. Both him and Kingery are strikeout machines and make a bad hitting team even worse. Every time one of the two steps up to the plate I cringe.

Eh, Seranthony is young. You're always going to have growing pains with a young closer. At least he's not Hector Neris. Chalk it up as a learning experience and move on to the next one. True. Hector Neris was worse. Guess it just bothered me that that strong an outing from JA was wasted in a loss. That's the Cole Special!

Watching the Red Sox has been fun this season. They really did put together a great team. I have to admit that I'm a little nervous though. I'd rather they win 95 games and run the table in the playoffs to a WS title than win 110 or more games in the regular season and fall flat on their face in the playoffs like the Mariners did a couple of decades ago... or the undefeated Patriots who couldn't close the deal against the Giants.

Well, we can't say Sonny Gray never did anything good for us. Helps save the day with 3 scoreless in extras.

Good 5-2 win over the D'Backs last night. Cesar circling the bases on a bunt was....interesting, to say the least. 2 errors on the play caused the run, but it's proof to take your time and not just chuck the ball to the next guy.

Mark it down on your calendars, boys. The Red Sox lost a game last night. We might not see that again for the rest of the year. I'm shocked.

I will gladly take all the power-hitting first basemen. Also, Bour can't kill us anymore, but he can kill the Braves still.

The Phillies piss me off so much. Never have I been so consistently proud yet just as disappointed in my team as I am this season. On one hand they went from the basement of the league to 1st in their division, but on the other they lose so many winnable games against sh*tty teams like the Padres and the ing Mets of all teams. They’re one of the best teams in baseball at home (pretty sure only Boston and NYY are better), yet still look like that basement team they’ve been for the past few years. This could be an easy 100+ win team if they would just beat these garbage teams and more than anything, WIN ON THE ING ROAD!

I'm kinda starting to get tired of the analytical direction that baseball is going in. I don't know if all teams are like this, but the Yankees and the way they use their players from night to night is just mind boggling.
Guys who NEVER get any hits are in their almost nightly...but other guys get benched the next day after having huge games in favor of "matchups".
I don't care if the pitcher on the other team is lefty or righty....you fill out your lineup with your best players! Do you think they would bench Lou Gehrig against a left handed pitcher? NO!
Neil Walker hits two home runs in a game (one from each side)....gets benched the next day because the pitcher is lefty and he's stronger from the left side.
They also seem to have "scheduled off days" REGARDLESS of how the guys are playing. Stanton has hit home runs like 7 out of the last 8 days. I wouldn't be surprised if Boone is told to rest him soon even though he's on FIRE and has only been DHing.
Years ago, guys would play 160-162 games as long as they were healthy....now you've got guys who miss 10-15+ games as just healthy scratches because they want to keep them "rested".
I don't care if the pitcher is righty, lefty, or throwing the ball with his ass....you should never sit Gardner or Bird when your lineup is already missing Judge and Sanchez. Shane Robinson and Luke Voigt (before he got sent down) can't even buy a hit to save their lives.
And if all of these equations and algorithms are true....how did Greg Bird hit the home run off Andrew Miller in the ALDS? The Yankees have all these spreadsheets of data that allegedly PROVE that left handed batters CAN'T hit left handed pitching....so how did that even occur?
I don't even think they watch the games anymore. They just have the computer spit out who's playing based on equations and analytics. Might as well just throw in MLB the Show and sim a season and not even bother playing anymore.

thats whats happening to baseball, there are so many games and so many points of data that people literally dont even care about what a player does in the game, they just look at their WAR and ARM and DDT and PMS numbers to say "well this guy doesnt hit lefties when the temperature is above 87 degrees and the wind is at 3.4mph"
its crystal clear who the "better" players are on any given team and those guys should be playing every day. Shifts and "tape" are ruining hitting, not pitchers. The fundamentals of baseball are still exactly the same, throw the ball hit the ball.
I understand giving guys a day off once in awhile, but maybe instead of so many days off you tell the guys to not swing a bat 500 times every day BEFORE the game.

In general I don't the occasional day off for rest here and there during the year, but NOW is the time for guys to be playing every single game. That's why you rest them in April, or May, or June... for now.

Bill James and his disciples are both a curse and blessing on baseball. They gave us some useful stats like game winning RBIs yet at the same time tried to trash the idea of a player being "clutch". They gave us pitch counts that stop pitchers from destroying their arms before they're thirty years old yet at the same time gave us constantly changing line-ups to take advantage of favorable match-ups that remove the incentive for players to improve the shortcomings of their game. A hitter who sucks against lefties isn't going to get any better if you never let him hit against lefties, right?
Statistical analysis has replaced the eye test - what's the point of even scouting players when you can find out everything you need to know sitting at your computer looking at spreadsheets.
And worst of all in my eyes, the idea of resting mean we'll never see another player make a run at Cal Ripken's iron man record. For my money, that was something even more special to watch than Sosa, McGwire and Bonds chasing and breaking home run records.

If the Phillies had an offense, they’d be beating the sh*t out of Boston. They’ve held them to a combined 5 runs in 3 games this season. It’s the only thing separating them from wild card level team to World Series contender, I’m not saying they’d break the wins record or anything like that, but this would be a damn good team with a couple big bats in the lineup.

Can you believe that the ing Astros are imploding and will probably end up losing the Division to the A's which means the Yankees will have to face Houston in the one game playoff and that means they are 100% getting knocked out of the Playoffs by Justin Verlander. Unbelievable.

At least it would be easier to accept defeat against them than if we’d lose to Oakland.
