Geez for 300 million the Padres could have signed Kimbrel, Keuchel, and Mike Moustakas....
I've never understood teams that are last place teams who sign ONE guy to a HUGE contract, rather than try and improve the team with many solid players.

Love the hate!
But to be real, I’m managing my expectations for the next year as I am used to with this club but I think overall, this is a step in the right direction. Padres just signed a massive contract with Fox this winter so I hope that will loosen the purse strings a bit more than they have. I’ve never seen this team go out there and spend this kind of money in my entire life.

the worst thing that happened to Harper was the fact that the Nats offered 10/300 and he turned it down it set the bar way too high and he was never gonna get it from anyone else. Well, he will now.

hey good for the Padres, telling other teams to right off and long-term signing one of the best players this era. kid isnt even in his prime yet, maybe the last couple years will be meh, but who knows. he is ultra talented and SD has a nice system, they could be somewhere in a couple years with him at the heart of it. that is an assload of money but whatever thats what players like him are gonna be making. Harper must be soooooooooo happy right now

I have a feeling Machado on the Padres is gonna' be like Melo on the Knicks. A lot of noise but little in the way of actual results.

Hard to blame the guy for taking $300 million if no other offers were comparable.
Kinda hoping Harper goes back to Washington. He's apparently "not sold" on Philly according to a report.

Apparently, the Yankees never made an offer. The White Sox offered 7 years/$175 million at first and then 8 years/$240 million and Manny said not enough.

This is cool for the Padres, hopefully makes the relevant again. They have one of the best farm systems, so those players will all get peanuts while he gets 30 mil. It works out. If he is useful for 7 or 8 of the 10 years (assuming he doesn't opt out - unlikely at that age), then they get a good deal. Salaries will probably surpass 30 mil by that time anyway.
What's concerning or interesting is that they have pretty bad pitching BUT have rich prospects to trade for that. They could be relevant this year. Should be good for the other bats in the lineup. I don't think this will be too bad of a deal.
People probably complained for years in San Diego that they weren't doing anything and sucked, then they went out and got Kemp, Kimbrel etc. and tanked, and then it wasn't good enough then. Can't complain about this now.
Looking forward to the vintage Padres gear as well.

Reported offer from Philadelphia is 10 years, $330M. That'll beat Machado by $3M a season, and tops Stanton's extension to have the richest deal in baseball history.
Also reported that Bryce is willing to give SD a chance to match, but I don't think they're gonna, nor do they have the wiggle room, to tie up $630M in 2 players over the next decade. I'm not a fan of the Friars, so maybe someone who is can touch on what their purse is like, but that's a big deal to have over a half a billion in 2 guys over 10 years.
I say Philly needs to say 10-350, and get his name on a contract. I just want them to get this dude. I'm getting tired of waiting, lol.

Other than Hos and Manny, the rest of the team is cheap and under control for the next 4(?) years. They could afford Harper if they wanted to. I believe they are currently below the league average in annual salary even with Manny on board.

This whole Harper saga HAS to eventually. Almost feels like he’s just taunting us at this point. If the Phillies really want to spend “stupid money” then they have to prove it. Make one final offer, 10 years for $340 million will get the job done. It’s long term and he beats Stanton by a decent amount, no way he says no.

But when the Phillies are supposedly the only suitor left willing to offer a long-term deal, all the posturing is ing moronic. Either sign or don't, just stop jerking around.
