Hey all! I've just gotten back into collecting wrestling figs and the more customs I see, the more I want to try it out myself. On the plus side I have plenty of experience doing detail painting work with small scale models. On the minus side I'm not sure how to take a fig apart, much less what components to look for.
So I thought I'd ask you, the customs community, for advice on that latter part. What I'm looking to do as an admittedly ambitious starter project is a custom Shinsuke Nakamura fig. Since it'll be on a bit of a budget, most likely, I'm looking to experiment with a Mattel Basic fig as a base. Any suggestions for a head to use as a base? And how does one remove parts/reassemble a Mattel figure?

It's hard to make a Mattel head look like someone else. I personally only make a custom if I see a head that resembles someone I could make. I'm not sure who would be a good fit for Nakamura. A basic Slater might work for the torso and legs though. Use acrylic paint and sealer. Both can be found at any craft store. Run the figure under hot water to pull off arms, heads and boots.

Thanks for the input. I've seen someone else who used an Elite CM Punk head with a Basic Justin Gabriel's hair to decent effect. Another possibility I thought of while browsing the figs at the local Walmart was using a basic Christian or Seth Rollins as a base. Thankfully I've got a ton of acrylic paint from other projects.

Thanks for the input - gonna make a WalMart run to see if I can get the body; UPDATE: Elites were on sale for $8 each, so I got an Elite Adam Rose to serve as the base for a custom Nakamura. The WrestlingFigs flash sale on Ringside Collectibles has a Basic Hideo Itami on sale and I'm wondering if that'd work as a base for the head.
