I've always noticed how outdated most of the Mattel figures are by the time they come out, ever since I started collecting again. It's a shame that Jakks was able to come out with current superstar styles way quicker, but at the same time they unfortunately lacked in so much detail, had horrible repaint after repaint, which in my opinion really devalued the coolness and uniqueness of each figure. I do love the Mattel figures though.
For those who play with their figures, and play current-era WWE matches, how do you explain all the outdated looks? Obviously if you're playing some stand-alone federation which is outside of real WWE continuity, this doesn't matter. But let's say you're playing the 2017 Royal Rumble... how do you explain all these superstars coming out with outdated looks? Do you just pretend their looks are up to date, or do you say that for some reason they all went back to their old looks/gimmicks? Or is there some other way in explaining this which I'm missing?
IMO, having to pretend about things too much devalues the detail of the figures. If you have to pretend all this stuff is going on with your figures that isn't really there, what's the point in them being so detailed in the first place? This is why back in the BCA days when I was a kid, and the figures did seem detailed enough to me back then, I would get lazy and do really poopy customs myself. I would do stuff like take an Owen Hart figure and just slap a bit of messy paint on it, and call it Crash Holly and just pretend it looked enough like him. There were even times when I would take a figure and just pretend it was someone else. One time before there was an X-Pac figure, I had a BCA Crush head which I put on a random DX street clothes body, and pretended it was X-Pac.
This is the type of reason why I usually play my own federation outside of any sort of real pro-wrestling continuity. And if there's a wrestler I want but don't have, I just wait to get him/her.

I usually don't think too much about it. The wrestler is the same person no matter what attire they are wearing. Who's to say they didn't decide to wear different clothes? I don't think it matters that much really.

In my fed, the gimmicks are original or are from a different time and just mixed in with everything else.

Oh, I forgot to mention too that I'm at a bit more of a loss than a lot of you since I only collect Elites. Besides Divas, I don't have even one Basic in my collection.

I was able to find a Seth and Dean for like 50 cents at a thrift store. They were in their Shield gear. I was stoked to find them at such a radical price! But after awhile it nagged me how outdated they were. I just bought the basic TNF Seth with the MITB briefcase. It's awesome! I'm holding off on Dean though. I may just go with zombie Dean until I catch up on the divas.
My Neville is dated as well. I can't wait to get a newer one. His first basic had horrible attire and I like him but that Elite price tag always turns me off. I just started collecting guys again so I'm totally behind. My wallet isn't prepared for multiple Elites especially if I already have a basic version.

Well, I don't play with my figures, but if I did I doubt it would matter. Unless it was something drastic like Seth going from the Shield tactical gear to tights. Then I would probably just make my own. But if it was just a different tights design or color I wouldn't care.

Not gonna lie, the op is a bit odd imo Well I can see why it's something sort of silly to spend time writing so much about, but really it's not something I think about a lot. I may be a bit OCD though. Just thought it could be an interesting topic as I was thinking about it last night.

The looks really don't bother me. I just have my guys change outfits. For example, Sting. I use current (E39) Sting but for "special occasions" I use the DM. I alternate between HBKs all the time. And a lot of guys that left, retired, or passed away are still in my fed too lol.

My fed ignores current day WWE other than title reigns. Same. I just do what seems fun

Yeah my fed is its own separate universe. Dean Ambrose is a 3x FWC Champion, who has had a recurring rivalry with Raven over two years and Hulk Hogan is an up and coming prospect from the territories. It's weird.

Galoob Z-Man became El Matador Hasbro Brutus became Zodiac Hasbro Macho Man became Macho King Galoob Doom became Harlem Heat Hasbro Bossman became Big Bubba Rogers Galoob Sid became Kona Crush Galoob Steiners got crappy looking new tights Remco Michael Hayes became Euroclydon (I made that up) Rambo action figure became Jimmy Snuka, then later Sabu Prince Adam (He-Man) was a veritable Barry Darsow of action figure gimmicks becoming Johnny Blaze and later Goldust The paint got chipped and knocked off and stuck to the other figures but I didn't care. My roster was CURRENT by gawd.

Usually when I get new figures I will have a debut for them or surprise debut and (flashback) that there back for the big gold belt and prove ho is boss
Most debuts are Either a recent rhyno, kinder mahal or a call up

I'll use Elite 19 Daniel Bryan and Elite 32 Bryan for an example
I was building a story to where Bryan cut his hair so I went from 32 back to 19 and he was attacked post match by whoever and he was out with injury
He returned again with long hair so I used 32
I used to hate mixing eras and stuff just because it didn't feel right. Now I can have a Rick Rude vs Seth Rollins match and it not bother me

It's kind of the main reason why I stopped basing my fed on the real life WWE. I still call my fed WWE, but I don't follow their current stuff it's just completely a different universe like what D-Sizzle To Shamrock said. Plus I got to make ECW a brand again so it's more fun like that than just worrying about outdated looks.

It's about using them like they were back then or making a new gimmick. Mike Knox joined the Wyatt Family after saving him from his mental issues. Hurricane is still a super hero. Luke Gallows is a biker. Brodus Clay is still dancing. Tensai has went back to way of Lord Tensai. Regal and Finlay are together part of Barrett's King Court. You just use some as the same gimmick or some you can switch it up.

I have brands
Elites 30 guys Basic 40 guys Tna 15 guys lol tna & da Indy's ra & C's Roh Wfw ecw, wcw, wwf bca, tna nwa marvel, lucha libre
So if people move up its because they get a Mattel like Stevie Ray is leaving the wfw fed to sign with Elite, same with Boogeyman, beefcake, tatanka from the tna, Indy's. However basic is my main line as its easier to get a replacement if someone breaks
