So I was browsing some of my favorite steel cage matches today. I've always been a fan of them. I noticed how the cages themselves has changed drastically over the past decades. I don't know why but I'm not a fan of the cages used nowadays. I'm not sure why though. I was wondering if any of you feel the same.
I happen to favor the old cages (late 80s to mid 90s) blue cages. I can't recall when WWE changed the style of the cages. I believe the last match I saw featuring the retro blue cage was the NAO vs Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie. It was probably was one of the last time this variation of the cage was used since it doesn't fit the Attitude era style.
I'm also a fan of the old AWA cages. Even if some of them looked like they were about to break mid way through the match lol

Cages that look like they're gonna cave in on themselves hold a special place in my heart. So do the cages that were about the same height as a wrestler inside of them.

I've never really been a fan of cage matches. I don't know why, they just don't really interest me.

I have no idea why I liked "scaled" cages. I guess because it's more of the caged in feel instead of "I have to climb out to win" feel.

The last time the black/blue big square cage was used was Rebellion 2001 with Edge vs. Christian for the IC Title. The reason in the 80s that they switched to that style of cage, was for Hulk Hogan. The first time it was used was at Wrestlemania 2. It was easier for Hogan and Bundy to climb on. They ended up keeping that cage for the most part, but still using the mesh style cage at times too. I know Randy Savage usually used the mesh style cage, unless he was wrestling Hogan.

It's you have to beat your opponent down so viciously only one walks out.

I like the old school mesh cages and more so that the only way you win is over the top or through the door. Check out the Adrian Adonis/Randy Savage VS Bruno Sammartino/Tito Santana cage match from Madison Square Garden from 1986. That's one of the greatest cage matches you'll see. Or Piper VS Sammartino from the Boston Gardens.
I wanna say the "big blue" made it's debut at WrestleMania 2. I don't like it. Too easy to climb out of.

The blue (and later black) bar cages always hold a special place in my heart. You got a real feeling that they had no give to them. Probably because it never bent.
The fence style cage is fine but at some point it got to where it was almost like a net when I guy got thrown into it.
I'm digging the new cages. The fence portion is nice and tight and the flat paneling on the supports has a cool look. I really like how they did it in NXT a few months ago.

I really liked the one used at St Valentines Day Massacre. It looks like it would actually hurt hitting it and the black version was looked sleek. I like the nowhere to run/ no one can help aspect to cages. Never liked the escape to win stipulation though.

I recall seeing or reading interviews where wrestlers actually complained that the blue and black bar style cages did in fact have no give and that is one of the reasons the change was made to the chain link style cage.

Here is a brief history of cage styles the WWE used from 1986 to 2002: Barred Cage Version One (notice the lack of a wire surrounding the top, was held together by chains-Used at WrestleMania 2): Chain Link Fence 1986 (Used at the Philadelphia Spectrum-December 13th, 1986): Barred Cage Version Two (notice the wires on the top as well as the cage being in half-used from 1987 to 1996) : Barred Cage Verion Three (notice the lack of a wite on the top-used from 1992 to 2002): Chain Link Fence (began using it at house shows in 1998, first televised usage was on the February 1st, 1999 RAW):

The cage walls descending from the ceiling was ing awesome. So much better than large arena versions where it just lowers slowly.

I like the cage used in the 'I Quit' match between Tully and Magnum. Felt like a really dangerous fight.
