While watching Raws in order from the AE, I noticed a very consistent pattern that shocks me.........is it me or did Undertaker absolutely suck from 97 to 2000? His ringwork is extremely sloppy and he was awful on the mic. Awkward pauses and stumbling over words. Even as the leader of the ministry I felt he could have done so much better.
Now don't get me wrong, he is iconic and in my top 10, if not on my wrestling mount rushmore. Perhaps he is just like wine, because he def got better with age. While I hated the gimmick at the time, his ABA run kind of rejuvenated him as he began to work that striker style, and he added a lot of moves into his arsenal. From WM X-7 and on he had an incredible career.
Thoughts?

The injuries mounted, he put on weight and brawled more to cover up his declining abilities. The shift from more scripted/controlled promos showed his lack of comfort having to talk. (and really with Bearer as a manager did he ever need to get comfortable?) Taker was able to ditch the cartoony gimmick and create a character that could work at his pace as he rebuilt himself in and out of the ring. That re-dedication is what lead to the later Smackdown! era Taker that was one of the best workers the company had.

I feel the opposite. I thought Undertaker's ring work improved greatly in 1997. I have watched many pre 1997 Undertaker matches and they were god awful. He was slow and his ring work was pure mediocre but from 1997 he really upped his game and developed his gimmick aswell.
1999 however was an exception because he was crippled with injuries and the weight gain didn't help matters either but apart from all of that it was one of my favourite Taker era's.

Taker was a hurting unit for most of 1998 and 1999 though. And he was still delivering solid matches with the likes of Austin, Rock, Shamrock, Kane, and Foley.
Plus with Taker it was never about having a 5 star match. It was just his character that did the trick. For example, all the crap matches he had with bigger guys earlier on in his WWE run.
