Is there such a thing? Someone says they have one and it has rounded turnbuckles, like the actual ring. They're telling me it's a variant. Was there such a thing made?

I think there was a JC Penney exclusive variant

I do not think there is anything different about the Penney's ring, just that it came with two figures.
The ring above, with round blue posts also came with blue flat topped posts and with black flat topped posts. They were just square or black and flat on top. It may have been that they were concerned with safety after the LJN rings were recalled due to allegations that their round posts were hazardous as they impaled more than one child.
I am certain you are not talking about the the yellow King of the Ring as being a variant.

Isn't the flat top designed for the "jumper" figures? Always thought that was why. They launch or can be displayed sitting on the top of the flat post.

I hadn't even noticed, the ring I have now is round topped. The one I had growing up had flat tops

I have 2 of these rings. 1 rounded and 1 with the flat tops. I like the rounded one better.

To the best of my knowledge, the rounded ring post were discontinued for "safety" but never seen a difference in turnbuckles.
