To an extent, I agree with him. A lot of indy matches follow the exact same formula. And there are very few nowadays who can tell a great story within the ring. But in the same token, Indy wrestling is striving more now than it has in years, so they must be doing something right.

The formula was apparently good enough for WWE since they stole it and then signed all of the wrestlers who were doing it so...

He's right, but it isn't just indie wrestling, it applies to NXT and often WWE as well. Dive through the ropes might as well be day one of wrestling school now, it's so overused to the point of meaning nothing.

To be honest, he's not wrong. Sure, it's fun to watch and the guys that do it are talented and athletic, but it gets way too repetitive. The constant lack of selling and storytelling doesn't help either.

One Sweet Chin Music used to put a guy down, but now the move is done 10 times a match by 10 different people on the roster. |

Orton's opinion would mean more if he was actually a stellar performer, but that's not the case.
But there is a formula on the indie scene that is drawn out and needs to be changed. More psychology will result in less flippy sh*t and less high-risk.

I honestly don't see the big deal. Wrestling evolves. A simple body slam or arm drag used to be commonplace every match; now it's a suicide dive or a superkick. In ten or fifteen years, it'll probably be something else.
Does it take some of the impact away when every other guy uses it? Sure. But that could be said for almost every move. And if you really want to make an argument about somebody using, say, a superkick as their finisher? You can kayfabe it away by saying that the person choosing to use it has perfected it like nobody else has.

Yeah WWE is basically the same but with less flips and more close ups of Cena's face loudly calling the match. I don't think its necessarily the worst thing in the world but I wish people focused more on the logic of the match. Bret Hart was the GOAT at this. |

Im glad the Indy guys didnt take themselves too seriously in their responses. What story does Orton tell? He just worked a program with Bray, a great modern character, and did nothing. They spent months where Randy was "playing along" to just turn on Bray, except all those times Randys eyes glowed or saw twisted images in the mirror.... They cant just retcon this stuff and go "Oh he wasnt under control, except those times he clearly wasnt himself...." They should have had Bray known he was going to try and turn on him instead of randomly just burning sheds down like some surprise. Headlock, headlock, powerslam, RKO "outta nowhere" repeat. All they told was the story of domestic violence and that Bray doesnt have powers. Except for those times he does... |

It's the culture now, it's a niche they've found themselves in - yes, wrestling evolves but where it goes from here is anyone's guess...

Thats my biggest problem with indy wrestling. Its all flippy crapforced "5 star matches" and nothing else. It gets really stale and repetitive really fast.

He wasn't wrong. Nowadays everybody and their mother does multiple suicide dives in a match. They used to be special now a dive is just a big ol "whoopity doo" in the match.

It's right, but the style has permeated wrestling as a whole, not just the indies.
But lol at Randy Orton inferring anyone is formulaic. No one has been getting by longer on phoning in formulaic matches than Randy Orton, he just does it in a different way.
