As someone who went to one of those house shows where these two headlined (although they went on in the middle) , i can attest to the fact that they indeed HAD chemistry. One of my favorite live matches I've wittnessed. Wasn't thrilled with the countout finish, but i knew even then ,there'd be no pinfall at a lowly house show in Evansville IN. But i was just thrilled Flair didn't eat a pin anyway. Point being, it could've headlined Mania 8, no doubt. The next time WWF came to town,it was Savage vs Flair in a Mania rematch. I scored front row for that ,and they trolled me with a false finish. Perfect threw Flair some knucks, he nailed Savage and got the pin, they gave Flair the belt ,then the ref found the knucks and DQ'ed Flair.........I'll never forget the disappointment. Lol....i was most assuredly the only 12 year old cheering for Flair in the building that night. When it was Flair vs Hogan, there were several fans cheering for Flair during that. Albeit older ones. The "no chemistry" thing always sat wrong with me. In WCW they had chemistry in spades. HH94 is a GREAT encounter between them. But even if they hadn't.....did anyone backstage think it would've been worse than Hogan vs Slaughter the year before? It was Hogan vs Flair....THE dream match & Vinnie wasn't creative enough to work something out.

I'd say its a safe bet that Vince could have figured out a way to handle Hogan leaving, saving face for his return, and protecting Flair as WWF Champion.....i truly believe the whole switch in plans was mainly due to Sids contract having that main event Mania spot written in. And Vince and co. didn't want that to get out because it would set a dangerous precedent in future negotiations with any other guys coming in. So they went with the no chemistry theory as a cover up.

I would have had Jimmy Hart trying to interfere on behalf of Money Inc cost them the tag titles to The Natural Disasters. After the match Money Inc just kinda waves off Jimmy and walks away leaving him in the ring. Then later on in the event when Hogan starts his hulking up on Flair, Money Inc do a run in that causes a DQ and lets Flair retain the title. You then have Flair & Money Inc beat down Hogan until a returning Warrior comes in and makes the save. Then we get all the roided up flexing and posing as Flair & Money Inc leave.
Flair would get go on to feud with Warrior and as summer approaches bring Hogan back to make a save that sets up Hogan vs Flair II at SummerSlam. This is where Flair drops the title to Hogan only for Flair to regain in again sometime in the Fall of '92. Then Flair can drop the title to Hart at Survivor Series (Hogan & Warrior would go on to feud with Money Inc, if Warrior leaves Savage fills the role) and everything else can play out as it did.

I think the idea was that Roberts/Savage would have been a Loser Leaves WWF match Yup with Jake set to vanish afterwards & take his long agreed on position in the backstage scene....but whatever happened between Jake & Vince over that is destined to remain a mystery. According to the Jake DVD released back in 05, Pat Patterson was supposed to step down in the creative department so Jake can take his spot but Pat changed his mind last minute which pissed off Jake because he claimed be was guaranteed that spot by Vince himself. Right before WM 8 he told Vince to release him from his contract or he will no show the event which Vince did and that was the end of Jake in the WWF until 96.

Man I remember being mega excited as a kid when Jake turned up in WCW to feud with Sting. My excitement was misplaced....

I had forgotten Watts was in charge at this time......oh man......LOL Yeah...Sting vs Jake. ..coal miners glove match. That was an old Watts gimmick that worked back in 85-86 in Mid South with Hacksaw Duggan using it. It did not translate to 1992 Sting ,or Roberts, in the least. But the snake bite debacle at the end of that match overshadowed how bad the gimmick was. Its too bad really....i think Sting and Jake could have been something special.

Roberts was pretty effed up by this stage by all accounts and wasn't the least bit interested in what he was doing....so that had to contribute too

Allegedly Vince lied and never intended to give him a job in the back. The lie was the Pat Patterson was supposed to be leaving because of some sex scandal or another and Jake would be replacing him. What really happened was that Vince sent Pat home for things to cool off for a few weeks then he brought him back. Jake found out there was no job for him, walked away from a very lucrative WWF contract, signed a major deal with WCW and got screwed out of that when Time Warner changed up WCW's management and ended up with nothing. That story comes from Tony Schavonie's podcast.
