Just listened to Prichard's podcast and he said about the Undertaker's 1994 Royal Rumble Resurrection. Prichard stated that Taker's wife was allegedly pregnant at the time and wanted to take a bit of time off, Bruce also said that the end of the match when the urn was broke and green smoke came out signifying The Undertaker's spirit escaping, well we did know that because Vince McMahon and Ted Dibiase commentated the show and McMahon said that the power of the urn was escaping, and the Undertaker's power was leaving as well. Prichard then said that Vince, Patterson and himself loved the levitation bit, and that The Undertaker was brought to the studio to film the footage a couple of days ago or the day before the Royal Rumble. And that they rehearsed the levitation during the show and he wasn't nervous at all that it didn't look good on camera, but Prichard thought it was good. Anyone's take on this.

I remember thinking it was corny as hell at the time, but even then, figured it was a good way to handle the temporary demise of such a character. Taker ,in those days especially, couldn't have his absence explained via simply being injured. He required something as mythical as his character itself, to find a way off of tv for an extended amount of time. As the product changed, he probably coukd have been wrote off with more conventional methods, but they rarely went there. Once he was injured in 99, his return in 2000 was that of an evolved character. In 03 ,his biker gimmick gets wrote off and he returns .....resurrected. So he never really was a guy who you could just "injure" and it mean something. Look at 95 when he legit got the orbital bone crack from Mabel. Dude STILL competed.....so no one would buy a standard so and so beat the crap out of him storyline with Undertaker. This early example from Rumble 94 is the personification of how strong his character was. It did come off corny to me.....but in a totally badass, comic book type of way.

It was a perfect way to write off the character for the time being. It allowed him to spend time with his family and heal up from any injuries. It was definitely hokey but it fit that time period to a tee.
I may be wrong but wasn't Marty Jannetty the one who did the levitation part?

Yeah, I was 11 and it was awesome to me. I couldn't wait to go to school the next day and tell my friends.
Always heard it was Janetty who was raised up and assume that to be true. UT did talk from inside the casket that was shown on the screen that is probably what was filmed in advance.

Stuff like that really made wrestling special for us as kids and it was the perfect way to write him off.

Well personally I always thought the reason Undertaker missed most of 1994 was because of injury, I thought he was on the hurt list for a few months, 1st time I've ever heard it was due to his wife being pregnant?

See I really thought it was Jannetty, everyone did assume it was Jannetty on the internet. However, If you listen closely in Bruce Prichard's podcast, they were talking bout the levitation, it clearly wasn't Marty Jannetty. It was a local from Providence, RI. Probably somebody from the indies, And I assumed that everybody said Jannetty. But now listening to Bruce Prichard's podcast. It wasn't. So we don't know who that guy was. But whoever he was, he must have done a fine job with it.
