So, even though i consider myself quite knowledgeable on old school wrasslin' matters, every once in a while i come across some golden rumor or plan that I hadn't heard before. Which is always awesome. In this case, the idea that Vince McMahon may have had an idea or desire to run with Kerry Von Erich as his mega star prior to going all in with Hogan. Now i know, oddy enough, that the Von Erich boys were featured on WWF All Star Wrestling back then. Davids death was even covered in Vinces magazine. And also in the WWF magazine, there was a mention.of Kerry defeating Ric Flair for the NWA Title. Obviously the free publicity in WWF was most likely intended to be a show of good faith when Vince was trying to get Fritz to work with WWF....we know that didn't happen of course...but the idea that Vince was so high on Kerry (i know..."high" and a Von Erich....there's a joke there, but I'm gonna skip it) that McMahon was seriously interested in making Kerry THE man was news to me. I'm curious how you guys feel that would have, or knowing all we know now about Kerry, COULD have worked. Personally i could see Vince positioning Kerry as a solid number 2 very closely behind Hogan.....but Kerry's problems would have derailed that pretty fast. If Vince got Kerry before he did Hogan, do you think the national WWF expansion would have been as hot? To be fair to Kerry, he was a major draw and on fire at the time. Yes, mostly in Dallas, but he was getting so much national exposure in all the mags that you could say he was "over" in a lot of places outside his region. Opinions? Thoughts?

No.... it wouldn't even be close to what we got with Hulk Hogan being the man for Vince in 1984.
I know Vince was always high on Kerry, I mean he brought him in the summer of 1990, had him make his debut on Saturday Night's Main Event, and then win the IC Title just a few weeks later. So clearly Vince was a KVE fan.
But Hulk Hogan was larger than life. And I am willing to guess that even in 1984, more fans knew of Hulk Hogan from the AWA than they would Kerry Von Erich from WCCW.

I agree. Even if Vince did give Kerry the Hogan spot in 84 who knows how long until his demons got in the way of his push. Imagine if got busted for something right before WM 1, there goes the big gamble the WWF put on that event.
Nothing was going to top the popularity of Hulkamania so IMO Vince made the right choice there. Kerry had a decent run though in the WWF for the short time he was there but was never going to be the face of the company.

I loved Kerry Von Erich, but Von Erichamania just doesn't sound right. It had to be Hogan.

Kerry was never going to be the man before Hogan. He was popular but really only in Texas. Vince wanted Magnum TA at one point to lead the WWF. That would have been interesting.

Could it have worked, yes. Would he have had the Hogan effect, possibly, but most most likely not, that was lightning in a bottle. That being said, growing up in Texas, I can say the Von Erichs were not over at the time, they were like freaking Greek Gods here in Texas. They sold at all over erthe state, they were the Texas version of Hogan, the Beetles and Elvis rolled together.
Would that family had the problems if that had gone National. Who knows it could have saved them or their demise may have happened even quicker than it did. They were a case of too much too fast.
They remain today my all time favorite wrestlers, just behind Macho Man.

Magnum would have been cool too, imagine all the what ifs if these guys were pushed by the WWF. Given Hogan I believe would still have worked his way to the top guy, he had and still has charisma that is unmatched. And he really wasn't as bad in the ring as everyone says. His Japan matches are pretty good and he carried Andre to an amazing match at WMIII and Warrior to a great match at VI. He was never Flairringnin the ring but he was not as bad as he is made out to be.

Von Erich would have blown it with his issues. The man was a wreck God love him. Vince had to take the IC title off him long before he had planned because KVE was such a mess.
Tragic to look back on really. Man was a crazy talent.

the Von Erichs hold a very special place in this fan's heart that's for sure, but there is absolutely no shoot interview I've read anywhere of guys liking to work with Kerry due to his drug use and unsafe wrestling in the ring. Fans adored him absolutely, but Kerry isn't held in the same regard as a Ricky Steamboat is with his peers that's for sure too.
