I am new to the world of figure photography for the most part and was wondering how people pose their figure for action/ airborne shots. I am familiar with the yardstick method but is anyone able to shed some light on how to put together a setup for that like how is the yardstick secured to the tripod, is there a need for a counterweight, what are the best joints to string from?

By the sounds of it you know more than me. I literally tie fishing line around them and balance with one hand while taking pics with the other. It's a pain, but works for me

I'd like to start filming for stop motion and would like to have something to work from.

It's hard to learn because this part of the forum is near dead. There's about 4 people that actually post here these days. I started a help thread that you can see on page one and didn't get a reply.

I animated for a few years and pic fed now so I'm pretty well versed in using string. I tend to just use a longer loop of string and hold it with my hand. I normally tie the string in a loop and place one end around the ankle joints of the figure and the other around the head for diving moves. For falling backwards shots, I place the loop behind the knee joints and the other behind the neck again. For shots on the top rope, I place the string under the figure's arms.
Hope this helps! I'm not too familiar with the tripod method unfortunately so I can't help you there.

Nice! Love it. Big fan of the use of blurring too.

and a bit OT, but what's the status of the rules, cause the rules from brm say "Use string. Unless the pose amuses me, it will be locked." did it change where the thread won't be locked if it doesn't have string
thanks in advance

crashholly2002 It used to be pretty strict at one time with using string. The board has kind of died down (no offence to those posting regularly) and Cass seems to be more chill about it. To OP, old I know but, I would also check out youtube. I've seen some tutorials and behind the scene stuff! Really like the quality of the photos you posted!

I've used string in the past by cellotaping it to the roof. As long as there isn't too much weight on it then its fine.
Rules about using string has been pretty strict in the past. I've had one of my threads closed because I was able to get the shot by simply balancing the figures rather than using string. After a while the rules became pretty relaxed.
