So imagine this, Austin beats Rock for the title, shakes hands with McMahon, and then stuns him as Houston explodes. But what would happen afterwards? Would he and Triple H reignite their old rivalry from late 2000-earlier that year? What about the inVasion angle, would Austin be the one leading the WWF into battle against the Alliance? What do y'all think?

I'm torn. Austin's heel turn was something different but at the same time he should've led the WWF in the war against the Alliance.

Heel Austin was one of the few good things about the Invasion. Maybe if that angle never happened him not turning woulda been fine

I'm torn on this. While overall the heel turn was a flop, it seemed like the right thing to do at the time. Nobody saw it coming and it got people talking. It's hard to say what would have been different if it didn't happen because so much was going on at the time.

I honestly think Austin going heel is what killed the momentum that the WWE had at the time. From the day Bret Hart got screwed at Survivor Series to WM X-7 when Austin went heel, the WWE was on fire.
The heel turn made zero sense. Fans didn't want to boo Austin. Especially in a time where Rock was leaving again for 5 months to film a movie.
Austin vs. Triple H could have been the main event for the WWE Title for the next few months. I just never thought the heel turn by Austin in 2001 was the right choice. And the WWE never really picked up the mainstream popularity it had again after that.

Huge mark for Austin here and I was revolted by his heel turn. But his one at Invasion was 10 times worse.....that should have went to Jericho.

I think the injuries that happened (Benoit and Trips) really hurt the original plans; though I think Jericho should have been the guys to go heel at Invasion but without the injuries I'd go with both Benoit and Jericho going heel, and then go from there with Austin/Jericho, Benoit/Trips for the Summer

It's a really good question. Because minus it...what was left for Austin? Feud with Taker? Feud with Kane? Feud with the McMahons? Feud with Triple H? I mean he could work programs with Jericho,Beniot and Angle but I feel that would be better for later in his title run. On my old website I use to do sims. And I just kept Austin face and he reignited his feud with Vince. And Austin beat HHH at Summer Slam 01 to retain his Title in HINC, then I used a Heel Kurt Angle backed by Vinny Mac to exchange back the belts with Austin. And that still felt quite stale.
The Heel turn was the only way to go honestly.

I feel a feud with Heel Biker UT who had turned new lackey to Vinnie would have been great stuff.

Yeah, but Austin ended up feuding with Taker anyhow for two PPVs in a row in 2001, April and May. Sure, Austin was the heel in the match, but like everyone said, it didn't feel right. Taker being the "I had to kiss Vince's ass, what makes you think you don't" heel gimmick then would have really worked. But instead we got the summer of Sara, where DDP stalked Sara and Taker was so mad about it.

To play Devil's Advocate with the situation; with the InVasion storyline happening and Austin leading the team, it did serve a suppose. Austin had Vince think he was finally on his side, but then he stabs him in the back and supports his biggest enemy, the WCW.
A better dynamic would be Austin wins the same way, but Stuns Vince after the match thus remaining Babyface and the Alliance has enough big names (Sting, Goldberg, Flair, Hogan, Nash, Hall, Steiner etc) to stand up to the WWF (lead by Austin and Rock) but that didn't happen as they could only get Booker T, Rob Van Dam, DDP, and a bunch of Mid Card guys.

It sucked, honestly. No one wanted heel Austin. From that moment on he wasn't much to care about at all until his return after Raw went off air before No Way Out 2003. That pop was ing incredible
