The Mattel retros got me wondering about WCW and their figure lines in the 90's.
Being that WCW tried to basically copy everything about golden era WWF, I wonder why they didn't copy the Hasbro figures? I never really thought of it until today. Even without getting Hasbro to make them, I guess they could have had any toy maker copy the style just like Mattel did in current day.
I guess they did copy the LJN figures though, but it could have been a gold mine for them to make Hasbro style WCW figures. Just wondering if anyone else wondered why it never happened.

Not if they actually inked a deal with Hasbro.

At the time it wouldn't have been possible: Hasbro would've opened a lawsuit... Why doesn't Hasbro sue Mattel now for copying their figures? Hasbro doesn't have this figure style on the market right now. Last WWF Hasbros are from 1994, the patent for that figure style had probably expired.

Never saw those before! Very cool, would have loved them at the time as a kid, but the original Galoobs have a charm all their own to which these would pale in comparison.

WCW was horrible at marketing so if there was a market and money to be made on merchandising more figures between 1991 and 1995, WCW would (and did) figure out a way not to do it. They had a magazine that went out of production for nearly a year (early 1994 to 1995). Most of the magazines didn't even feature a merchandise catalog during the Bischoff years. I remember just a few rare times in late 1997 that the magazine featured a merchandise catalog. Oddly enough the early years of the magazine (1990-1992) had merchandise catalogs. It wasn't until 1993-1994 (related to Bischoff?) didn't feature catalogs.

Not if they actually inked a deal with Hasbro. Which was impossible since Hasbro had a deal with WWF. I took it to mean AFTER the deal between WWF and Hasbro had expired. The tone of it felt like he was bringing up the way WCW took all of WWF's leftovers in the mid to late 90's. Maybe the OP can clarify.

WCW had already got a deal with Original San Franscisco Toymakers. It's just they chose the cheap option of figures with no articulation. It took them years to realise it wasn't the 80s anymore.

I wasn't a fan of the LJN copy OSFTM figures, but they were much better than the horrible, lame articulated ones that looked like generic dollar store figures.

Yeah, either with Hasbro after they split with WWF or just have whatever random company they were liscensed with imitate them just like Mattel is doing today. Which I wouldn't have thought of back then, and was surprised to see the Mattel could/would outright copy the Hasbro line.
