So what if Bret had retained the WWF title on Raw? And what if Austin had won it at Mania 13? How long do you think this would’ve lasted? Do you think it would’ve been too early for Austin?

Austin winning as a heel would've been awful. 1997 was his build up year and his slow face turn was perfectly done so when he finally did win the belt the fans were ready and he was the most over guy on the roster.

Steve Austin is a perfect blueprint of how you groom a mega star into a household name. 1997 would have been way too early for him to become a World Champion. WrestleMania XIV was the perfect time because it really ushered in the Attitude Era. 1997 was designed to get Austin over, make him look credible, planting seeds, and allow for an organic rise to the top.
What people don't realize about Austin's first reign was The Undertaker was the only former champion that was there. I am glad they took their time building up Austin. Just the thought in mere months would be 20 years since WrestleMania XIV makes me feel old.

I had not discovered that fact till about a couple of years ago. Out of all the top draws who became a World Champion, Steve Austin had the fewest former champions during his first reign.

Austin winning it in 1997 would have been bad. It was cool that he got a title shot against the Undertaker at the May In Your House PPV, but I am glad he didn't win it then. He needed Tag Titles and IC Title reigns before winning the main title.
The one thing I wish would have happened is that Austin vs. Bret match for the WWE Title when Bret was champion from SummerSlam to Survivor Series. Instead we got Bret vs. Patriot and Vader feud. Though Austin was injured anyhow during that time frame, it would have been sweet to see Austin vs. Bret then. That was one feud that could have went on for years, and I don't think anyone would have gotten tired of it.
