Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knows what the first known variant (error or mid-production change) was to exist, and the first chase (intended alternate) was, of any action figure line ever? Have these been prolific through most toy lines in history? I have been a toy collector since I was little, but had no idea about variants until the Spy vs Spy and Kill Bill sets of the early 2ks. Thank yall for the help.

Variants can go back to big mass market toy brand. Since they weren't all made at the same place there's huge discrepancies is paint apps. Luke Skywalker, He-Man, LJN Hogan all have figures who's hair is a different shade. Or pants/belts/really any paint app. Star Wars toys were released in the late 70's.
That's also probably one of the first lines to have a major running change with the double telescoping lightsaber. Production runs after the first had single telescoping lightsaber. As for dileberant Chase variants we can probably blame McFarland Toys and the Spawn line from the late 90s/early 2000s. I've no idea about the first though.

The first one I knew of was the original Star Wars line with Han Solo getting the large and small heads.

Star wars are the first I know of. The first I encountered: Robin hood Prince of thieves. The Costner Robin hood figure is just a repurposed different color mold Green arrow figure from previous times. I had the figure and wondered why there was a ing "g" on his belt and found my answer in wizard magazine. Before that the first one I was aware of was the toy-biz 1989 Batman figures. They have three different heads. One actually is shaped like Keaton's face. One is more like a comic version long ear head and the other is very square. I realized there were different ones when I took my Batman to a friend's house and noticed it. Also, I believe joker from that same series came with an easy to miss flaw. He either has one or two hair curls on his forehead.

Wasn't the Sheriff a repurposed Steppenwolf?

Yeah, I realized that after I posted.... I started thinking about weird toy trivia while I was thinking of variant figures and then it popped out. I can't recall as I don't ever remember seeing Step. I did have a sheriff figure but I can't remember what he looked like other than all black suit
Just checked and no... it doesn't look the same. Sheriff had a textured suit that was like vertical lines.
