I'm aware Austin was wrestling before he broke his neck now but at the time when I first saw him in the WWF/E his neck injury already happened, so I'm more used to the aggressive, punch and kick brawling style he was doing after the Owen Hart piledriver that eventually forced him to retire in 2003. But how was his wrestling style before the injury ?

He was a better wrestler before, but a better character after.

He was a hell of a wrestler before and a hell of a brawler after. Honestly I think it worked out perfectly for him. He didn’t need to have classic ring matches as SCSA. He was perfect.

He was a fantastic wrestler as a Stunning Steve-Ringmaster, but StoneCold was/had the better character/matches.

I don't think he ever lossed a beat in his career, he was always a great brawler.

He was a great wrestler before the injury. Ive watched old videos of his stunning steve days and he was very good in the ring. In the mould of Bradhsaw or Barry Windham, very authentic looking punches and clothlines, could get in snug and wrestle witht the best of them, he could do it all before he got injured, just go back and watch WCW from 92-95.

His two big singles matches against Bret are two of the best WWE matches of all time. He was one of the best before the injury.

Better worker before, for sure.

Just go back and watch his matches with Dustin Rhodes, Shane Douglas or Ricky Steamboat from WCW, and his Bret Hart matches from WWE. Austin was a machine, and could wrestle a great match.
But I think even if he didn't have that injury to his neck, he would have changed his style to brawling once he became THE guy. You wanna do as little as possible so you can maintain that main event spot and not get hurt.

Since I'm pretty sure he's not currently in WWE, I'm going to give this to PJ.
As for the question, Austin was a much better worker before the neck injury. Afterwards, he just wasn't the same. But I still think his best in ring work was during his Stunning Steve days.

But I will let it slide because while Stone Cold was the better character I also think his best ring work was when he was Stunning Steve in WCW.

He was great in ring during his Stunning Steve days as well as his WWF run up until the injury at SSlam 97. He was never the same after that.

He was considered one of the best technical wrestlers in the world before his injury.

As everyone has already said, Austin was obviously a better wrestler before the neck injury. In my opinion though, even if he hadn't had the neck injury, I just think moving more towards the brawling style, he would adopt would have just made sense. The Stone Cold character, once it was perfected, was not the kind, that was going to come out, and put on a mat wrestling masterpiece, he was the guy that was going to come out there, and beat up anyone that got in his way. And on a bit of a related side note too, even after the neck injury, he could still put on a good wrestling match. There was one he had with Chris Benoit on Raw in 2000, and the story of the match, was Benoit saying he'd beat Austin in a wrestling match, because he was the best wrestler. So instead of Austin coming out, and just brawling, he actually wrestled Benoit, kind of sticking it to him. While it wasn't on the level of his ability prior to the injury, it was still entertaining, and definitely a bit of a departure from the Stone Cold style.

I know I'm in the minority but I prefer Stunning Steve Austin.

He was always a great wrestler but he was even greater after the neck injuring incident with Own. I think that the new stories about him add to his character even more.

Gimme a beer!!!
Austin will always be remembered as the quintessential character of the attitude era. Post neck injury, thankfully the characteristic brawling style covered up any vulnerabilities in the ring.
Stunning Steve will always be remembered as the great wrestler. His matches with Steamboat were epic!!
