On April 30th, 1977, in Baltimore, Superstar Billy Graham won the WWWF Championship from Bruno Sammartino to become the biggest WWWF star around despite being a heel. He had the look and charisma, a perfect 10 on promos and several wrestlers would later adopt his style including Hulk Hogan and Jesse Ventura. Another reason for his popularity was that fans were used to more "ethnic" champions such as Bruno (Italian), Stasiak (Quebecer), Pedro (Puerto Rican) or Ivan (billed from Russia) and to see an "American" as champion was someone who they wanted to get behind for a change. Graham would sell out everywhere to the point that thousands couldn't get tickets during big shows because of how hot his run was. Unfortunately it wouldn't last too long as Vince McMahon Sr, was determined no matter what, to give the title to Bob Backlund. Graham pleaded to Vince Sr and even suggested to become a babyface, but Vince turned his plea down and would reject the idea that a heel could ever become a babyface. It's said that during a dinner prior to the title change that those close to Vince Sr (like Bruno) didn't agree with the title going to Backlund, but Vince Sr's stubbornness wanted to see it through and it was that stubbornness that nearly brought the WWWF to bankruptcy. This alternate history has Vince Sr change his mind about Superstar Billy Graham on the advice of his son Vince Jr, starting with the date he was supposed to lose the WWWF title...

__________________________________ MAIN EVENT: Superstar Billy Graham (c) (w/Wizard) vs. Bob Backlund for the WWWF Heavyweight Championship.
The man went on as it originally did with the change in the finish. Bob Backlund lands the big atomic drop for the pinfall, but Graham's leg was on the rope as the referee noticed (rather than pinning him which is what originally happened). Backlund lifts Graham again for another atomic drop, but isn't able to balance for Graham to fall over the top rope. The referee counts Graham out who was hurt on the outside. Winner: Bob Backlund via Countout. Superstar Billy Graham retains the WWWF Heavyweight ChampionshipAfter the match, Superstar's manager the Wizard in frustration, starts to slap Graham around and runs to the back. Superstar gradually gets on his feet and gets pissed as the crowd watch him instead of Backlund who is still "celebrating" in the ring. Graham runs (with a limp) to the back as the fans near him cheer him on. Post-Match Interview:
Superstar: (in a serious tone) You don't, and I mean you don't ever, touch me like that again. You don't touch me, I'm a man free, no man has a right over my body, no soul has a right over me brother. For everyone who saw it I am still the WWWF Heavyweight Champion, but you Wizard, I'm done with you. I'm done with managers, I'm done with guys like you.... Suddenly Luke Graham (kayfabe brother) shows up with the Wizard behind him. Luke: Hey hey, you don't get to treat this man (Wizard), this man with disrespect you hear me. He is the reason you're standing here with the WWWF Championship. Superstar: Get outta my way Luke! Luke: No I'm the eldest, you don't get to touch him. Stick your nose somewhere else because the next time I ain't gonna let this go and give you a beating of your life little brother. Superstar: (gets in Luke's face) I'd like to see you try. Luke slaps Superstar! Superstar looks pissed but let's Luke go. Vince Jr on commentary talks about family loyalty and how the Grahams are a dynasty in the world of professional wrestling. __________________________________ Wee Willi Wilson & Hillbilly Pete def. After the match this is where it changes. Superstar looks at Backlund showing "sympathy" as WWWF officials check up on Backlund. WWWF Championship Wrestling April 1st, 1978 Hosts: Vince McMahon Jr and Bruno Sammartino Note: This was the WWWF's main TV program (1 hour) till it was replaced in 1986 with Superstars of Wrestling.
Vince McMahon Jr starts the show at ringside with a mic and calls out the Wizard. Vince: I have to ask, the WWWF Heavyweight Champion, Superstar Billy Graham who you once managed has issued out a challenge to Ivan Koloff. I believe everyone wants to know what is your affiliation with the Russian Bear? Wizard: I have replaced that Superstar of Nothing, with Ivan Koloff who I will be managing (Ivan Koloff appears)... Ivan: O look at you Superstar Billy Graham, you a cry baby, you challenge me anywhere? You say you'd fight me in Moskva? Well I want to fight you in your great American city New York so I could humiliate you and the country you claim to love. So I issue out the challenge if you got the guts to face me, let's sign the contract. Vince: I'm sure he will sign... Ivan: You forget who you are dealing with, it was I who defeated the great Bruno Sammartino, it was I who became Heavyweight Champion, they said no one could take it away from him, but I did! They called that day a funeral, and so it will be for you Superstar. But I noticed, I noticed that there was a quiver in your voice, what is it are you scared of Koloff? Are you scared of losing your title? Look I know you got those 23 inch muscles, I know you pride yourself with how you look, but looks won't save you in the ring. And with the Wizard who knows everything about you, who knows your every move, by my side, you can be sure I will walk away with your title. MAIN EVENT: Dino Bravo & Dominic DeNucci def. Mr. Fuji & Prof. Toru Tanaka (c) via pinfall to become the NEW WWWF Tag Team Champions.

Ivan Koloff with the Wizard makes his way out to huge heat from the crowd. He gets in the ring and starts taunting the fans, as some fans wave American flags. Out comes Superstar to a big pop from the crowd. Superstar has his Arizona State outfit and gets in the ring. The bell rings and they both go at it. Ivan gets in the bearhug already with a ropebreak. Ivan works on Superstar's back and lands a few leg smashes to his arm. Superstar continues to struggle as Ivan works on the legs now. Ivan goes for a sleeperhold, but Superstar gets fired up as the crowd is chanting his name. Superstar rams him into a corner and gets in a suplex for the pin to two. Ivan manages to counter a move and leg kicks into Superstar's back as he hits the turnbuckle and Ivan goes for a roll up to two. Ivan hits the ropes, but Superstar gets in a big clothesline. He starts to climb the top ropes (which is what he used to do at times), but Ivan slams him from the top and tries to get him up for the Russian Neckbreaker. Very impressive and ambitious start, given that history books covering - even in the 1970s - this period are sketchy. I see you have done a lot of research, as displayed with the use of the old flyers and promotional pictures. Good to see. I hope you can actually stick to this diary and commit to it for an extended period of time. We need more long-term diaries on this forum.

He gets in till Ivan pulls a "pearl harbor" and attacks Superstar before the bell rings. Getting in some holds early on, Superstar counters with a lariat and bodyslam. Ivan struggles to get on his feet each time Superstar manages to bring him down. Ivan sweeps the legs and starts to work on them. Ivan uses the ropes to his advantage, trying to injure the champ. Ivan finally starts to make the climb as the Wizard shouts on the outside. Superstar tries to get back on his feet and manages to make the climb after Ivan. Ivan kicks Superstar down and climbs back down. He continues to assault on the champ. The match continues on with Ivan having the upperhand and Superstar getting cut on the cage, bleeding to his chest. Ivan lands a powerslam and hits the second rope for an elbow smash to the face. He starts to bite Superstar to make him bleed more. Ivan goes for the bearhug and squeezes the life out of Superstar who passes out. Ivan makes the climb, but Superstar crawls and grabs a hold of Ivan's legs. Ivan kicks the champ to the mat, but Superstar won't let go of his leg. Ivan tries to climb, but to no avail. Tatsumi Fujinami & Riki Choshu def. Nikolai Volkoff & Tony Garea via pinfall
Andre the Giant fought Seiji Sakaguchi to a Double Countout___________________________ MAIN EVENT: Antonio Inoki (c) vs. Superstar Billy Graham (c) for the NWF World Championship and WWWF Heavyweight Championship in a 2 out of 3 falls matchAt ringside is Ivan Koloff who is watching the match in the front row. Back in 1976, Inoki defeated Superstar by submission as Ivan rushed in after the match was over and viciously attacked Inoki. Here Ivan hates both men and as Superstar is on his way out he talks trash to Ivan as Japanese commentators make mention of their hatred and one time friendship. Inoki comes out and both men show mutual respect. (the match would be too long to document) Both men take turns with the advantage till at 40 minutes in, Inoki gets in the countout victory when Superstar falls to the outside and Ivan keeps him distracted for the countout. Superstar starts a fight with Ivan on the outside as officials from NJPW try to stop them. Ivan is kicked out of the arena as fans clap and Superstar is back in, though the time limit doesn't halt. Inoki gets in a submission hold, but Superstar counters with his bearhug finisher. Superstar has the hold on him for a strong five minutes, till Inoki passes out. Suddenly Ivan runs back out and attacks Superstar giving the DQ win to Superstar rather than the submission. Tokyo police stop Ivan, but as the match continues, the 60-minute time limit expiry is declared. Winner: DRAW, Antonio Inoki remains NWF Champion and Superstar remains WWWF Champion. Both men shake hands and raise them in the air with their respective titles out of respect to end the show.
