So I recently purchased sandpaper and an x-acto knife off Amazon to attempt to take off the goatee on HOF Jerry Lawler, but now have a stupid question. After taking off the goatee with the knife, I began rubbing the sandpaper onto Lawler's chin, though the sandpaper is not working like I thought. First of all, the paper is leaving the chin a much lighter color (lighter than the skin tone) and it's not making the chin very smooth. What am I doing wrong? Tips?

Are you using a fairly fine grain of sandpaper? I have found it often takes a good while to get things to smooth out the way you want them to when going this route. Otherwise, I wonder if there may have been a finish applied to the figure after painting, and that's giving you some color change? Have you rinsed it off in water to see if that helped remove any fine powder left behind?

I don't want to take too much of the chin "away" so I hesitated going any further...

Go to an auto parts store and get one of the sanding blocks used to finish out auto paint jobs. They are good for wet sanding and you can get 2,000 grit which will do a really fine sanding job.
