The basics are hot garbage... it seems even Mattel is aware of this, given the “make your collection elite” posters etc they made for Access.
Basics have their place, but as said - almost all ‘collectors’ seem to go after elites

The boxes, better made figures/attires, accessories, and title belts make it all look as nice as possible. The only basic figure I ever bought was the Sasha Banks zombie discounted at TRU.

Would you rather have the basic JJ Dillion set or no JJ Dillion at all? Sets are probably made based on how much budget they have for the lines. I'm not gonna pretend to know, but I imagine that they had enough in the basic budget to make that extra set. Main line Elites are getting better, so they probably didn't have the money to make that an Elite BAF set. Wait, did something change? All the images I’ve seen of JJ are elite. I thought only the figures you had to buy were basic.

I’m completely out of the loop on the Basic line. What articulation changes were made?

I was a die-hard basic collector for years, had maybe 500 or more at my peak. I loved them and never thought of them as a downgrade. Now the paint looks sparse on most, lots of details missing, shirts being painted on bare chests, resculpted arms that look ugly, low low low quality control, and ankles which were key to getting some poses which gave the illusion of more articulation than there was are now gone.
I'm beating a dead horse, we've been over the shortcomings, but I'll repeat: I had 500 or more. Now, I haven't bought one in months. I hate just how hard they've fallen. To get Dillon I'll have to suck it up and buy 4 bland and ugly figures. I might just eBay a complete one.

I was hesitant about starting a Mattel collection after I had sunk so much money for about 15 years in all the jakks figures. I had everyone I wanted in jakks form.
My first Mattel figure was Daniel Bryan’s first basic. I started out buying basics because I thought they were the same as elites, only without accessories and the ab crunch. $20 also seemed ridiculous for one figure.
But as time went on, I bought more and more and less basics.. I like there’s more deco and they’re much better for posing and customizing.

I’m completely out of the loop on the Basic line. What articulation changes were made? They improved the elbow joint not sure of any other changes

I’m completely out of the loop on the Basic line. What articulation changes were made? The bicep swivel and ankle joints are gone. The arm rotates at the elbow now and they appear very TTL-ish in person.

I only collect basics, I dont play / pose my figures so I dont wanna pay double the price for more articulation and a shoddy accessory.
There are some guys that do awesome work at making tee's for figures so thats my cost efficient back up its cheaper than elite and its cloth not plastic so its win win.

Just kidding. To answer the question, no, Mattel does not put much thought into which figures to put in basic and elite form. Basics are for kids, but they can also be for adults and collectors. Elites are for adults and collectors, but they can also be for kids. Yes, basics have less articulation, hence could be better to play with, and yes, elites have more articulation, hence could be better to display and pose, but both are sturdy enough to play with, and both can be displayed and posed, as seen in many collections and figure federations. At the end of the day, these are all toys. Why should someone who can’t afford elites get stuck with basics without Legends?? I’m almost positive that if every collector who has voiced their distaste for basics stopped buying them, it probably wouldn’t put a dent in their bottom line. I’m sure a company like Mattel is doing enough research to justify their actions. I don’t think they’re checking this forum. They may have people look into it, but this is a small percentage of fans vs. the rest of the World. As far as the Build-A-Figure lines are concerned, that’s just brilliant. If Mattel was targeting collectors and adults with certain lines, then why are all of these in the toy aisle and in the toy stores?? Let’s say for a family who can’t drop $20 for just one figure wanted to get his son a Legend and a SuperStar so they can play together. Having Legends in the basic line fixes that issue. Now the father can buy his son Macho Man Randy Savage and Roman Reigns for the price of just one elite. It could be a “one SuperStar figure for you, one Legends figure for me” type of relationship. I’m sure this has been going on since the beginning of time, but don’t quote me on that. As long as there are collectors, there will always be something we wish would be done differently.

Best post I’ve ever seen in my life. Do you guys do “post or comment of the year”? This would win hands down.

Speaking of basics and Elites I saw this Basic display box at WalMart this morning. It says Basic Series 84 on the Box and also says new basics every month. Unfortunately for MOC collectors the tops of every card was crushed. I saw one for Elites over the weekend at another Walmart.

I’ll get basics if they have parts I need for swaps or for my kids.

Well I know there was two, but there might have been three.
