A few years ago I was big into doing jakks to mattel and basic to elite conversion customs. I was cracking torsos and doing custom paint work and the like. Now when I think about making new customs I just don't feel I have the skills anymore. Anyone else have this feeling before. Is customising like some other things where if you don't regularly work on it you lose the ability?

Is customising like some other things where if you don't regularly work on it you lose the ability? I think it's down to motivation. I used to do a fair few customs but lost interest bit by bit until recently when I got a couple of ideas of things I'd really like to do so now I'm really feeling up to it. When you don't have the enthusiasm you tend to lack some attention to detail which shows in the painting or sculpting or whatever then you think "this isn't good" but maybe take a break then pick a project that you really want to get stuck into and your enthusiasm to create that work should bring out the best of your skills again.

I am starting again slowly with a few fix ups. See where I go from there I guess.

I used to do custom Hasbros and repaint LJNs. I stopped for over a decade. I recently started back up again with Mattels. At first, it felt like I couldn't do it anymore. It took a while to get back in the groove, but I've been having fun doing relatively simple ones.

I used to fix up and customize every figure I ever bought just to make it 100% "mine". Over the past few years I've slowly just not given a crap.
Figure realm was a good site until they changed the layout. I haven't been back on there in like 2 years. Seeing all of the wonderful things that someone like a Kyle Robinson or a Glenn Webb would crank out would always inspire me.
Seeing people work on comic or movie based figures is what would inspire me the most. And there really isn't a market for it on this site. I tried to get a thread going for comic and movie customs and fixups but it never gained traction.

i know how it is. i was rather depressed for a while, hopping from one shared apartment to another, living out of a room and a storage unit. After I finally got into a place just for me i started feeling better, now Im getting back into my work, including some bigger projects like my buried alive set

I think what is holding me back as well is how much it now costs to buy figures for fodder and get them shipped here to australia. It used to be so cheap but now it is like do I buy a figure for customising when it is going to cost $20 or more just for parts.

Hell yeah, I had to buy a Kelly Kelly figure for £11 just for the head and arms. Need some knee pads now, probably going to have to buy a figure for £6.50 just to get those.

Yeah this is the same as me I haven't properly made any customs since the early Mattel days. I've been trying to get back into it a bit but I'm finding it hard, and that's just torso cracking I haven't even got the paint brushes out yet!
I know I was decent - good back then but I'm sure it'll come back eventually. Just wish I hadn't trashed so many of my old jakks parts that I could have practiced on before notching expensive Mattel figures

I'll say this about custom work, it's always fun to learn another trick that you didn't know while working on the figure before. Sometimes that's enough to get a spark going again, thinking out a new plan. I have had periods of doing nothing, and then will get an inspiration that starts me to going again. Perhaps you just need to find a project to get excited about. The other facet that I enjoy about customizing is putting out a figure that people like to see, or maybe haven't seen before. Wrestling is an entertainment medium, customizing is also much the same in an artistic sense. You want to wow the crowd, but you need a crowd to wow. This custom board just doesn't seem to have the traffic needed to provide positive reinforcement and make you say "I'm glad I put in the hours of work." So that can be discouraging at times.
