So I was listening to Something to Wrestle With, and thought about how WM6 lost 200,000 viewers compared to WM5 and Vince was disappointed with the Ultimate Challenge (Hulk vs. Warrior) not drawing the kind of money he hoped for and it was this match that made him decide against face vs. face matches in the future (heck even SS92 gave you feeling that Randy or Warrior was allied with Flair/Perfect). How would you change WM6? The first time I watched it it was...long...ughhh, just waiting in anticipation for the last match. Here is my take (and it's shorter):
HERCULES VS. THE BARBARIAN (w/HEENAN)
- A good starter match for a strength vs. strength match
TITO SANTANA VS. RICK MARTEL IN A NO DQ MATCH
- Feud began at WM5 with the breakup of Strike Force and Rick Martel turning heel.
- A great way to end a year long feud at WM6 even though they've worked many times at house shows, they deserved a PPV showdown.
EARTHQUAKE (W/HART AND DINO BRAVO) VS. AKEEM
- Akeem is the one who turns babyface after Slick sells his contract to Jimmy Hart and Akeem says he's not for sale. Quake squashes him leading to the match.
- Typical monster vs. monster match
JIM DUGGAN, KOKO B. WARE & THE ROCKERS (w/JIMMY SNUKA) VS. THE ORIENT EXPRESS & THE BOLSHEVIKS (W/FUJI)
Backstory
- The match is built over time for an eight-man tag confrontation involving a "foreign menace" in the Orient Express and Bolsheviks. The babyface team could hold up American and Canadian flags.
WWF TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS THE HART FOUNDATION VS. THE DEMOLITION
Backstory
- SummerSlam 1988 - Demolition (heels) def. Hart Foundation to retain the WWF Tag Titles
- SNME Oct 88 - Demolition (heels) def. Hart Foundation to retain the WWF Tag Titles
- SNME XXV: The Demolition def. The Bolsheviks to become the No. 1 Contenders for the WWF Tag Titles
- RR 90 - Hart Foundation win Tag Titles
- Demolition are fan favorites in early 1990 and this become a Face vs. Face confrontation.
- More attention is drawn on a March Episode of Superstars toward a Contract Signing where all hell breaks loose between the four.
JAKE ROBERTS & ANDRE THE GIANT VS. BAD NEWS BROWN & HAKU (W/HEENAN)
Backstory
- Royal Rumble 90: The Collosal Connection (Andre & Haku) lose the WWF Tag Titles to the Hart Foundation after Andre and Haku get into an argument and Haku kicks Andre. Andre is reprimanded for his attitude by Heenan till Andre grabs a hold of him and slaps him hard turning him into a babyface.
- WrestleFest 1990 (June VHS release): Jake Roberts fought Bad News to a Double DQ.
- SNME XXV: Jake Roberts and Bad News fight to a Double DQ once again.
- Superstars Feb Episode: Haku attacks Andre the Giant during an in-ring interview. Jake Roberts runs in to help, which is interesting since Jake was Andre's opponent at WMV. Roberts and Andre become friends.
- Superstars Feb Episode: Andre asks for Jake's help for a tag match challenge. Heenan asks Bad News to join Haku.
RODDY PIPER VS. BIG BOSS MAN (W/SLICK)
Backstory
- Boss Man is still a heel and continues the storyline of being a corrupt cop
- SNME XXIV: After Dusty Rhodes successfully defeats Boss Man, Boss Man attacks Rhodes and locks him in the ropes with cuffs for a beatdown. Out comes Roddy Piper to make the save.
- Royal Rumble 90: The story is built upon Boss Man arresting Roddy Piper in the back with cameras showing it happen during the Battle Royal to make sure Piper doesn't even show up at the Battle Royal and missing his chance to win the Royal Rumble.
BRUTUS BEEFCAKE VS. RICK RUDE (W/HEENAN) IN A HAIR VS HAIR MATCH
Backstory
- The two feuded in early 1990, including a Superstars episode on Feb 17th where Vince wondered on commentary who Rude would face at WM6. We could have a slow build here.
DUSTY RHODES (W/SAPPHIRE) VS. TED DIBIASE FOR THE MILLION DOLLAR CHAMPIONSHIP
Backstory
- Dibiase taunts Dusty since Royal Rumble for being a poor common man who deserves to be a garbage man
- Dibiase being the "Millionaire" challenges the "Common Man" Dusty for the Million Dollar title
HULK HOGAN VS. MR. PERFECT (W/GENIUS)
Backstory
- SNME XXIV: Genius gains a countout win over Hulk Hogan thanks to Mr. Perfect
- SNME XXIV: Mr. Perfect destroys the WWF Heavyweight Championship belt
- December 27, '89 PPV Event: Macho King def. Hulk Hogan (c) to win the WWF Heavyweight Championship. Mr. Perfect costs Hulk Hogan the WWF Championship with three chair shots over the head when the referee was knocked out.
- WrestleFest 1990 (VHS release in June): Mr. Perfect def. Hulk Hogan via DQ at MSG after Hogan uses a foreign object that Perfect originally had.
- Royal Rumble 90: Mr. Perfect manages to toss Hulk Hogan over to win the Royal Rumble
- SNME XXV: Mr. Perfect def. Jim Duggan, Hulk Hogan runs in after the match to get his hands on Perfect who was assaulting Duggan, but only manages to get his hands on the Genius only.
- The Main Event III: Mr. Perfect interferes in the WWF Championship match (Hulk vs. Macho King), once again costing Hulk the title, but Hulk still gains a DQ win. Perfect doesn't care about the World Title, he wants to destroy the imperfect Hulk Hogan.
WWF WORLD CHAMPION THE MACHO KING (W/SHERRI) RANDY SAVAGE VS INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR
Backstory
- December 27, '89 PPV Event: Macho King Randy Savage def. Hulk Hogan (c) to win the WWF Heavyweight Championship after Mr. Perfect and the Genius interfere.
- Royal Rumble 90: Mid-way in the Battle Royal, Macho King and Warrior meet and test each other out, eventually both men after trying to get Andre the Giant over fall to the outside and they fight it out.
- SNME XXV: The Ultimate Warrior (c) def. Dino Bravo (w/Hart), Macho King runs in with a sceptre and breaks it over Warrior's head as part of his mind games. Shortly thereafter with the request by fans and the Warrior, Warrior has been chosen as the No. 1 contender for the WWF title and it will be title for title at WM6.
- The Main Event III: Hulk Hogan def. Macho King (c) via DQ. Macho, Perfect and Genius beat down on Hulk after the match, with the Warrior running in to help Hulk as they clean house.
