Finally coming around and playing ball that they're capable of playing and should be playing, and I fully believe they will win the division... only 3 out of the wild card as well, further proving how wretched the national league is, and that anything's possible, even if you're a Cubs fan.
Would rate the team a solid B, but I expected them to be playing like this the whole year, and not just the month of June. While this is a vast improvement from last year, I still must say I was hoping for more... but I can't complain one bit with the position we're in going into the break.

Sweet Lou will always get an A+ in my book. as a person sweet lou's a++ very good bidder will buy from again... as a manager, he's done questionable things at times that make me think he's senile. alas, he's finally gotten things rolling a bit.

i don't understand how can you guys give Jeter an A+ for right now.....i can understand the past years and possibly this year only because of hitting...but com'on his defense has been at best average this season...he deserves like an A- for right now just because of his defense Jeter, A-Rod, and Posada are the only reasons this team is even as close to a playoff spot as they are. Without them, they'd be in last place. Jeter hasn't had that great of a year defensively, but he's made up for it with his bat.

I gave Jeter an A, probably would bump it down to a B+ or a B. Here is why- His average an on base % are very Jeter like, right up around his career averages. However, his power is kinda down. Yes, I know he was never a power hitter, but he should be a 15-20 home run guy, and if this season holds up, this will be the third consecutive season his home run total has dipped(23-19-14-projected for 10 in 2007). Some may argue that home runs aren't important. I'll agree to an extent... but I want my 21 million dollar all-star shortstop hitting more than 10 home runs for my 200 million dollar team, okay? Thanks. Do I want Derek Jeter clogging up a spot in my American League lineup in 2008 hitting 5 home runs in 2008? No thanks. More importantly, his defense hasn't been bad this season- it has been abysmal. You look at some of the plays he does make sometimes- the jump throw against Oakland a few weeks ago, and wonder how the can't this guy range to his left if his nuts depended on it. He has never been a gold glove caliber shortstop, regardless of what the history of the award will tell you, but this season he has looked like a little leaguer in the field most of the time, botching some elementary plays. Adding to that, he hasn't had the penchant for the "big hit" that he has had in the past. People will rag on A-Rod for not coming through in the clutch. Between this season and last season, I can count many times where Jeter has come up with the tying or go ahead runs on base, and has grounded out. Its hard to criticize a guy who has done so much for the organization, but this season he has not been as good as his numbers dictate. I used to defend him as the best shortstop in the game, but when I see some of the other guys at the position, I can't help but wonder if Jeter should consider a position switch in the near future. Edit: I forgot to mention my main point- His baserunning has been terrible. In the past, he has been a threat on the bases, with the ability to steal upwards of 25 bases, while getting caught very infrequently. This season he has 7... and has been caught 7 times. He looks sluggish on the bases, and has made some baserunning blunders you never see Derek Jeter make. His average may dictate otherwise, but I think we're seeing the slow breakdown of him... he just looks like a one dimensional player right now. I have always maintained that he should have been the one to move to third base, not A-Rod.

Rating the Cardinals will either depress or anger me. I'll just say the pitching has been horrible & thats putting it nicely.

I asked myself- "Is Andruw Jones doing THAT bad?!" Then I looked his line up, and saw .211 batting average. Sheesh, I know the guy is a low average hitter for his career, but low is .245-.260... not .211.

Yeah, I was watching the game on ESPN last night and I, too, had no idea he was really doing that bad. In fact, I think they said when the game first started that he was batting .204 before last night's game.

Well, until a few days ago, he had been under .200 for ages. He's actually been on a "hot streak" lately. If anyone in baseball deserves a F-, it's Andruw.

Overall Thoughts- With all the talent they have, I was hoping for a better first half. It could've been worse with all the injuries, but guys like Carlos Gomez, Ruben Gotay, and Jorge Sosa have picked up the team. So far, so good.

Yeah, with the Braves not playing that well, I am thrilled to only be 2 behind the Mets. Especially with our cleanup hitter using a wiffle ball bat.

1B Kevin Youkilis- A: Just been terrific, not much else to say
2B Dustin Pedroia- B+: Started out slow, but has really turned it on since the beginning of May. I really think he's the 2B of the future.
3B Mike Lowell- B: The guy would have an A if his defense wasn't abysmal this year. I really don't get it. The guy has always been terrific defensively, and he's just been downright BAD.
SS Julio Lugo- F: There's no getting around it- this has been arguably the worst move Theo has made in his time here. He's hitting below the Mendoza line, has horrible defense, AND we lost a first-round pick because of the signing. The only thing he's been good at( very good, actually) is stealing bases, but he's hardly ever on base so it's moot. I'll admit I actually supported signing him, but boy was I wrong.
C Jason Varitek- B: Nothing to say, really..
LF Manny Ramirez- C+: Definitely doesn't deserve to be in the ASG. Power is way done, although his average is about where it should be.
CF Coco Crisp- C: Started out horrible in April/May, but has done well in June/July. Always gives it his all on the field, and is getting better with the bat. Hopefully the Coco we've seen lately is the one we see for good.
RF JD Drew- D: Unlike Lugo, I was completely against this move, and it looks like my instinct was correct. Pretty bad first half for Drew. I think he'll improve, but I still think the signing was stupid.
DH David Ortiz- B+: I dunno..statistically he's having one of his best ALL-AROUND seasons. But I'll be honest..I'd rather have him be jacking balls out of the park like mad and hitting walk-off homers than have him be what he's been in the first half.
SP Josh Beckett- A: I expected Beckett to do a lot better this year, but I didn't think he'd be this good. Has slowed down a bit, but still one of the best pitchers in the league this season.
SP Daisuke Matsuzaka- B: Overall, he's been pretty much EXACTLY what I expected. Not ace-quality, but still a very good pitcher. I like the signing. I don't think he'll improve or deprove( is that a word?) at all, but stay where he is.
SP Curt Schilling- C: I'll be honest..I can't wait for his contract to run up at the end of the season. I'm sick of him- his numbers have been pretty good the past two seasons, but anybody who's been watching the games knows he isn't really a good pitcher anymore.
SP Tim Wakefield- C+: Started out terrific but has been utter crap lately.
SP Julian Tavarez- B+: Can't ask for anything more. I've been very impressed with him, more so than just about everybody else on the team. He's really found his niche as a starter.
RP Hideki Okajima- A+++: Team MVP.
CP Jon Papelbon- A
Overall- A. Kind of forced to give them an A because they have the best record. But honestly, I think this team overachieved.
