A thought from the recent US Toys R Us closure.
I'm thinking a merger between Smyths and The Entertainer would allow for an even greater buying power. I feel The Entertainer could benefit from Smyths' aggressive sales strategies, whilst Smyths could benefit from The Entertainer's shopping mall locations. I'm concerned with retail being in such a fragile place at the moment - specialist stores could be in trouble.
The one I think won't last much longer is Hamleys - they have three stores within House of Fraser - and I don't think House of Fraser will last much longer so that's those stores gone. And then they have eleven other stores in the UK, and further five are in airports. I think they will leave the UK apart from the original Regent Street store, and expand even more in Asia where they seem to be doing really well. They might even sell the Regent Street store to Smyths or The Entertainer. The last one is Toymaster - and I doubt their future as well to be honest.

With the collapse of Toys R Us, the future of toys at retail does look bleak. I doubt that Smyths will merge with The Entertainer anytime soon, but never say never. As for Hamley’s, I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if they were to close down. A lot of retailers do not adapt with the times, which inevitably leads to their downfall, and I would agree that Hamley’s is on the verge of that.
Cheers, Nev

UK needs more competition in this market not less.

it wouldn't be good, they are kinda two different stores, ones in high streets and on the road yet Smyths is like retail parks and out the way

Cheers, Nev I totally agree, their stuff is SO overpriced it's a joke at times. I remember the last time I was in Hamley's the wrestlemania elites were £30. Which is at the least 30% above retail. And that series in particular is pretty weak too.

Couldnt work out if this was a serious questuon or not. But why on earth would the 2 biggest toys stores in the uk merge? Not sure about Smyths but the entertainer is a family business and im sure itll remain as such
