Something I feel is overlooked a lot is Savage and Flair’s match where Flair won the title back. Vince was so upset with the match that he literally stopped it and had them do it again.
I feel like this may have been a reason as to why Savage’s WWF career quickly slowed down. Vince likely felt that Savage couldn’t go as a top guy any longer (same with Flair which is why he asked for his release).
Still a major shame that we never got Bret/Savage at WM9.

Savage run as top guy in 1992 was an unmitigated disaster. He was never getting back to the top after that. There were so many factors why..but it remains a disaster.

I doubt that that Savage was the primary reason, more that he was the guy Vince had to keep the title on. Warrior was back to eventually replace Savage, but that didn't work. Other than the obvious separation with Liz later in 92, which put a dent in the package that Savage was part of, there were other factors that contributed to the WWF decline. 1. Hulk Hogan (still the biggest draw), Sid, Piper, Jake Roberts etc were all gone by WM 8. 2. Steroid and sexual harassment scandals damaged WWF's reputation 3. The United States was in a slow recovery from the recession 4. Domestic popularity of wrestling decline, WCW is proof of how terrible PPV sales were. Overseas they were still in a boom. 5. Savage was still considered according to Bruce Prichard to win back the title off of Flair, but Savage wanted a backstage role. Lastly, 1993-94 was far worse than 92. 1994 fiscal year resulted in a big loss.

He was unreliable & his work had suffered terribly. That's what I was referring to. Everything else listed are valid points for wrestling on the whole....but not what I was talking about.
