Infamously one of the biggest mistakes in wrestling, Verne Gagne not making Hogan AWA champ. But what if he had? Do you think Hogan would’ve stayed in the AWA had he won the title from Bockwinkel? Does the AWA become a big competitor to the WWF with Hogan as AWA champ? How long would his reign would’ve last? Or do you think Hogan was bound to go back to New York and defeat the Shiek at MSG?

I think Verne was always going to be the 3rd company in the US since they departed from the NWA collective. By the mid 80s it was WWF, NWA, AWA, and eveyrone else like WCCW, USWA, etc. I've read stories that by then Verne was already not changing with the times and lost touch with the product. He was pushin his son Greg for crying out loud All to say, that even if Hogan was AWA champion, I still think he would have been pillaged by the WWF to be their cornerstone on the roster. He was always going to be a big star in Vince's WWF, he just would have had a little more pedigree coming in if he was a former AWA champ.

none of it would matter - vince jr’s whole plan of conquest would have gone on without hogan or not, but hogan not only secured it but made it insanely more succesful than if he wasn’t a part. awa just would’ve held on for longer you can only imagine - but other younger talent like perfect, rockers, hall etc. were already making jumps.

Even if Hogan had been made the man in AWA, he'd have soon seen the writing on the wall and gone to Vince anyway.

As had already been said, even if Hogan had gotten the AWA Title, it wouldn't have helped. Hulk Hogan was only half of the equation of what brought Hulkamania to the heights it got to. The other half was Vince, knowing how to push him out into the bigger spotlight, and make him that mega star. Even as champion, with Verne as his booker, there's no way Hogan gets to the level he did, under Vince. Vince was looking into the future, while Verne was trying to stay desperately in the past. In order to get to that level, Hogan needed Vince, as much as Vince needed Hogan.

Technically Hulkamania started running wild circa 1982 and Hulk making his declaration on Carson. Vince did take it to a whole new level, but who knows what would've happened? Gagne had to change if he was going to give Hulkamania the run that it deserved, but that was doubtful.
When Hulk left that was the beginning of the AWA exodus with guys like Dr. D, Jesse Ventura, Mean Gene and eventually Bobby Heenan heading over to WWF. Plus Stampede stars started leaving the AWA for WWF.
Most likely, the territories might have continued going, but not for too long.

Great question. Even if he did win it, I don't think Verne would've booked him properly. I do think Hogan would have jumped to the WWF, but it would have been interesting to see how he would have dropped the title. Remember- Hall & Hennig lost the tag titles on a count-out. Garvin dropped the TV title the same way.

Can you imagine how that pitch would have gone? "McMahon will promise you the world. But if you stay with me, I'll give you $100,000 a year, my old station wagon & you can marry my daughter."
