So, the Major Wrestling Figure podcast has me feeling nostalgic lately about old figures. I believe Zack recently mentioned something about R3 Tech, which had me look those up.
The question I have is, why did Jakks abandon that so quick? I believe it only lasted a year in like 2002? Also Jakks still would put out TTL figures which threw me off. That first set of Unmatched Fury with RVD, Booker T and others was TTL. I think I had begun transitioning my figures to R3 and then all of a sudden I had to bring back TTL. Just wondering what Jakks had in mind for the line before switching to RA in 03
Didn’t love the playability of R3 though. Looking back at them, some were great. Kurt Angle, RVD, Jericho being some of my favorites. Kane looks good too but I can’t remember if I had him. But then there’s Triple H who was way too skinny. Hollywood Hogan was good too but he was pale as a ghost

A couple of years ago, before I became deeply intrenched in rebuilding something of a collection, I bought an R3 Diamond Dallas Page at a con on a whim for $1. At the time I just wanted a DDP, but now as I strive to tidy and display my collection, I don't even bother putting him up. I don't like the figure at all. I was out of collecting by the time these things were new, but even then I thought they looked really weird in stores. Some of them are alright, but some are just proportionally bizarre from chest to arm and such.
That Scott Hall always strikes me as one of the more notably terrible figures.

Good skinny figures that size up well to Mattel. I miss them

Some of the R-3's had a torso where the back was completely dented in. There was also an Undertaker figure that had legs so stiff I was scared of breaking it. They were OK figures but not a favourite of mine.

I had a few R-3’s, I didn’t really like how they looked in my collection as it was mostly TTLs at the time. The skinny arms and arched backs were awful. The best things to come out of R-3 IMO were Kane and Jeff Hardy’s scans and the untucked shirt torso mold. Shame none of those have ever been redone.

R3 was a great idea, but Jakks didn't/couldn't execute it fully, so the mishmash of parts ruined it. Maybe it was a lot more expensive to produce than the identikit TTL/RA figures.

- R3 could and should of worked but jakks didnt fully invest in the line. the tag was real scan, real scale, real reaction.
we got real scan in the heads and they started using 'scanned' body moulds. the best figure they did IMO was Angle but you could only use those parts for Angle.
if you look at Austin and his torso its posed as if hes doing his corner pose, thus the dent in the back, and that torso ended up on rock, hogan, undertaker.
if you look at the shirted torso the nWo came out with that IMO is based on Hogan and fits well for him and if you look at it next to the torso used on Billy Gunn you can see they are almost identical which leads me to think the Billy Gunn torso is actually a Hogan torso.
basically if jakks had invested in the line and kept the right parts for the right person EG Benoit, rikishi, Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy, street gear Rock then the line would of been awesome.

The best R3 was Benoit. From the head to just above the ankles that figure was perfect. But the shins:ankles were too thin. Angle was pretty good, but his knees articulation was made way too low.

Grrrrr I remember back then getting very excited for the R-3 tech Mr. Perfect and then it was cancelled due to Hennig being released.
I did love some of the others such as Benoit, Rhyno, Rikishi, Billy & Chuck, Christian, Test, nWo street gear Hogan, Hall and Nash, even the nWo 2-packs I loved Nash in his ring gear.
Gotta say for some reason my favourite was the WWE Draft Diamond Dallas Page, mainly because I really wanted a DDP but he had his tattoos.
I do wonder what could have been if they would have carried on with it, stuck with it and invested into it more... I've still got like 4 or 5 of those Metal Vengeance Arenas in my loft unopened lol.

Gotta agree about Benoit. I remember being on the fence about this series but still got Benoit and Jericho. Jericho was ok but Benoit blew me away and I started getting them all to replace my TTLs but in typical jakks fashion by series 3 it was all repaints and that Austin torso kept popping up! Also gotta give some love to R3 Big Show, that was a damn near perfect figure and it still held up long into the RA days.

The Rhyno and Big Show R3 figures were the best!
I love the detail on Kane's first R3 figure but the body proportions are a little too skinny/oddly shaped. Either the TTL with the specially made mold, or the Classic Superstars RA articulation Kane in that attire are the best figures for that look.

I was 9/10 years old when they came out in 2002. The first time I saw them was at my friend's house. His parents always bought him tons of figures at a time, almost to the point of being spoiled. When I first saw them I thought they looked incredible! My favourites were Big Show and Kane, but there were so many good ones. I agree with some of the criticisms above too such as the arched back mold, DDP being too short, no tattoos, stiff joints on the figures wearing jeans etc, but overall I thought it was a pretty cool series.

I really liked the R3 Tech line. I'm a sucker for any figure with the articulated hands admittedly but I liked them a lot better than the bulky, everybody-gets-the-same body figures that followed. That's my gripe with Mattels, they are hardly better about that. The Mattels are just skinny instead of bulky now. The R3 Techs did have some huge errors though, like the arched Austin back they decided to start giving everyone (which has already been mentioned). I don't get why hands like that aren't the norm now, a locked closed fist or open fist is limiting to say the least.
Edit: I looked through some of the newer Mattels and I'm pleased to say I was wrong! Quite a few different body types offered these days.
