Sean Sherk passed a lie detector test saying that he did not knowingly use steroids. While certainly not conclusive, it can’t hurt his chances at getting his suspension over turned or at the very least reduced.

He still failed the urine test, but this is step one in proving his innocence.

I don't follow UFC, but is this going to court or is this a fighter vs UFC type battle?

Here's basically the situation... Sean Sherk is the UFC Lightweight champion. He won a fight, but failed a drug tests. Oddly enough, his opponent also failed a test for steroids, but his opponent has pretty much admitted to taking steroids and is not appealing. The test basically showed that he had elevated levels of testosterone or something like that - something that was way abnormally high.
Dana White, the President of the UFC, seemed pissed off at Sherk, saying that he was embarassed that the UFC was being represented by someone who took steroids. He has since changed his tune and is starting to defend Sherk, saying that Sherk is not the kind of guy who would look you in the eye and lie to you, and he looked him in the eye and said that he didn't take them.
Sherk has been appealing the suspension, claiming that he has never taken steroids and that although his levels were high, it was not completely impossible that his body naturally produced those levels due to him being such a ridiculous workhorse when it comes to training and such.
It's kind of hard to explain, but basically, he's being suspended by the State Athletic Commissions - not the UFC themselves. This means not only can he not fight for the UFC - he can't fight in the United States for a year.

Only thing is that lie detector tests are not admissible, you can use so many different ways to muck up those tests. I do not know anything about this dude, but I do know a lot about law and if it reaches anything higher than the State Athletic Commission, then that test is rendered useless, it still might be.

Yeah, it's tough to say -- but I think he's proving to fans that he is being truthful.

Yeah, it's tough to say -- but I think he's proving to fans that he is being truthful. I agree. I'm sure the fans would still welcome him back with open arms after a year suspension, but this is showing his character. He knows he did nothing wrong & instead of sitting at home & BS'ing about it, he's doing something about it.

I kind of doubt that the Commission will lighten up on Sherk due to the lie detector test, but you never know.
The thing is, even if he unknowingly took the drugs, they really have to punish him anyway, I would think. If they don't, then it sets a precedent that fighters can claim ignorance for a lighter sentence. I don't think the commission will want to go there.
If he's suspended, fined or whatever, then even if Sherk was somewhat innocent, at least it shows fighters that they have to be careful, because there is zero tolerance for a failed test even if it was "unknowingly."
