Fantasy Grumblings following Week 6
bringtheblitz.com/news/163042606.shtml
What a week for fantasy football. After one of the lowest-scoring weeks we’ve seen in a long time, the league bounced back with one of the highest scoring weeks we’ve ever seen. Numerous players had huge fantasy football days and put smiles on the faces of their owners.
- Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer have been good fantasy contributors so far this season, but both took a back seat in week six as TE Jeremy Shockey led became the apple in Eli Manning’s eye. Manning found Shockey six times throughout the game for 55 yards and two touchdowns. Shockey has been battling injuries all season and hadn’t provided his fantasy owners with much for scoring before this game. Though Shockey won’t provide this kind of production on a consistent basic, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he became a big-time red zone target again for Eli Manning who tossed 7 touchdown passes to Shockey in 2005. Barring injury, Shockey should be in your lineup if you are in a league which requires a TE. Despite his disappointing week 6 performance, Plaxico Burress should continue to be the team’s top wide receiver. Owners of Amani Toomer have probably seen his best games already, though it is certainly possible that he will have a couple more solid games.
- As I mentioned, there were quite a few receivers who had huge fantasy games in week six. Perhaps most notably, troublesome Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens hauled in five passes for 45 yards and 3 touchdowns. After the game, Owens was all smiles and everything looked good in Big D – too bad they can’t play the Texans every week. Not to be out-done, Torry Holt tacked onto his league-leading receiving statistics with 8 receptions for 154 yards and 3 touchdowns. In the game, Holt became the fastest player in NFL history to 10,000 career receiving yards. Whoever said Holt isn’t an elite receiver anymore needs to put a sock in it… Though they didn’t have quite the fantasy points that Holt and Owens did, Lions WR Roy Williams (10 receptions, 161 yards, 1 TD) and Panthers WR Steve Smith (8 receptions, 189 yards, 1 TD) led all receivers in yardage this week and helped their teams on their way to victory. It should be noticed that the Panthers are undefeated this season with Smith in their lineup.
Waiver Wire
- QB Jon Kitna, DET – Kitna has a blooming relationship with WR Roy Williams which has worked out very well for fantasy owners with Williams on their team. Now it’s time to take advantage of his quarterback. The Lions face the Jets in week 7, then have a bye week in week 8 before playing the Falcons in week 9. The real beauty will begin when the Lions start their string against the 49ers, Cardinals, Dolphins, and Patriots – all of whom have struggled against the pass this season.
- WR Brandon Jones, TEN – Who? Brandon Jones is a young WR in Tennessee who has become a favorite target for new quarterback Vince Young. Though he hasn’t done anything spectacular, he did catch a touchdown pass this week and has been targeted 11 times – more than any other TEN WR – over the past two games from Vince Young. For very deep leagues, Brandon Jones may be a reasonable pickup.
Trade For
- Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson currently leads the NFL with receptions with 39 and is 4th in the league in receiving yardage. The Texans have struggled to get their running game going and David Carr has obviously found his #1 target in Andre Johnson. Johnson had an off fantasy week (only 75 yards receiving) in week 6, which may make owners forget about his previous statistics. Johnson was targeted by Carr 14 times in week 6 and his numbers should be solid just about every week. If you are able to get him for cheap, do so.
- Fantasy owners looking for a solid #2 RB may want to look toward Detroit RB Kevin Jones. Jones’ stock has been on the rise all season. Jones scored a touchdown in week 6 and produced over 120 total yards. The best part about Jones is that most owners will be willing to get rid of him for cheap and his schedule is very easy over the next few weeks. Jones faces the Jets, Falcons, 49ers, Cardinals, and Dolphins in next 6 weeks.
Trade Away
- Who would’ve thought that after 5 weeks of football, a San Francisco 49ers running back, Frank Gore, would lead the NFL in rushing? Well, week 5 is gone and Gore has fallen to third behind Tiki Barber and Steven Jackson, but he remains a hot topic in fantasy football. My recommendation for owners of Frank Gore is to get rid of him while his stock is still high. The 49ers are still struggling on offense, even against weak defenses, and Gore has not scored a touchdown since week two. Gore’s stock is likely on the decline, so it may be time to shop him around your league. The 49ers have a bye week, then face the Bears (6th), Vikings (4th), Lions (11th), and Seahawks (5th) – each of which rank in the top third of the league against the run.
- Eagles WR Reggie Brown has been a surprise success and the Eagles top receiver through six weeks of the season. Brown has scored 5 times (4 receiving, 1 rushing) in six games and has looked very good in doing so. Though Brown could continue to have good games, the Eagles have a tough schedule coming up and Donte’ Stallworth will be returning from injury very soon, which will likely cut into Brown’s touches. Brown’s value will likely be at an all-time high next week, having scored twice in week six and once more in week five. It is very possible that Brown could earn you some nice return in a trade.
