Hi Folks..Merry Xmas!! Crimbo always brings back a lot of childhood memories for me - growing up throughout the late 80s and 1990s was an amazing time - especially for action figures. Just was reminiscing today and came across some fond memories: - Getting my hasbro figures from Argos - including my Ric Flair and Arn Anderson Galoobs
- Remember getting my Akeem and Ultimate Warrior from WHSMIHS!! Believe it or not, but they used to stock WWF figures once upon a time
- After the Kevin Costner Robin Hood movie came out, Argos was quick to stock the whole line of action figures, unfortunately my parents said no!
- Woolies - remember my Dad forcing an employee to go to the back and check if they had any more blue hasbro wrestling rings as he kept saying they were sold out. Lo' and behold, he came out with the last one! Amazing goosebump moment in finally getting a ring for all my hasbro figs - before I used to cut a cereal box side off and use it as a makeshift ring lol.
Funnily enough in our house, my brother was more a Batman fan, so during Xmas i'd ask Santa for WWF/WCW figs and he'd want something to do with the Bat...a hell of a task for my parents to hunt these things down! Fortunately or unfortunately, I was both a WWF and WCW fan - in large thanks to ITV's coverage of WCW worldwide on Saturday afternoons. Makes you think, in an age where there were no mobiles, internet or social media; our parents would literally drive from shop to shop not knowing if they would find what they were after. Hats off to them!! I've also managed to find some awesome scans from retro argos catalogues - note the price of figs back then. Pretty cool! Feel free to share your childhood memories too guys

Great thread. The Argos catalogue was huge at that time. It took an age to look through but I almost knew the page of wrestling figures. Ultimate Warrior from series 1 was my first purchased. From then on Woolworths with Hulk Hogan and back to Argos with Jake Roberts. Opening the packaging was cool but that worry of losing Damien scared me. Little woods and I think Kays catalogue stocked them figures too. Batman, power rangers, turtles all ruled the roost but Nintendo gameboy ans sega mega drive where cool at the time. I need to own a 1991 Argos catalogue.

Anyone remember Index? I believe that was where I got my first wrestling figures from. Or at leas the first ones I actually remember going and getting after I became a fan around 1998. I had been introduced to wrestling maybe a year or two before that but never really got into it the first time. My cousins had handed my down the blue WWF ring along with some WCW figures, the ones that had no articulation like the Steiners, Sting, Lex Luger etc. And I also had the Jakks WrestleMania mini ring that came with Taker, Shawn, Bret, Owen, Vader and Sid.
But the first figures I actually got after becoming a fan were the mini Raw Is War and Royal Rumble ring sets for Christmas in 1998. I was so buzzing to finally get the Raw one and had been counting down the days to Christmas '98 for at least 2 months, maybe longer. I even kept the page from the Index catalogue with the Raw Is War set on it in my pocket and took it with me to school just so I could look at it. Eventually the page jut became a little square cut out of that particular set until it was crumpled and fragile as hell.... then I got a new Index catalogue and repeated the process xD. Playing War Zone at my cousins and watching wrestling tapes had me so excited, finally opening that set on Christmas morning felt surreal. It was the best feeling ever finally getting to play with it!
I got a lot of stuff from Argos and Index over the years after that, including the Survivor Series and KOTR sets, championship belts, BCA figures, TTLs, RA figures, the first ever Elimination Chamber set, Unlimited figures, Flex Ems, Stunt Action rings and more.

Yeah I got The King of The Ring mini ring set there when I was a kid. From what I remember Argos moved into all of Index's old stores in my area.

Argos and Index were huge for me collecting Hasbros - especially towards the end of the line when they had almost completely disappeared from stores in the high street (new releases at least). I always appreciated that while Argos only had three of the six red card series figures in the catalogue, at least they were the first in the line figures (Bam Bam, Luger and Yoko) rather than the other three who been out before. As much as I loved Bret, Taker and Perfect - and loved the new looks those figures had - I always felt I had to ration my money for the new figures rather than guys I had had already in earlier releases. Had one of the new figures not been in the catalogue then I doubt I could’ve found him anywhere else - I don’t remember seeing Perfect, Bret or Taker on the shelves at all. The last purchases I made “at home” will have been Doink, Scott Steiner and Samu from either the Argos or Index catalogue (Index I think). I got very, very lucky that my brother went to Canada on business shortly afterwards and got me Rick Steiner, Fatu, Jannetty and Giant Gonzalez to finish the new guys from series 9 and 10 (I know Jannetty had been out before - I had already made an exception for HBK Shawn so Marty deserved the same exception to my usual rule ). I don’t remember ever seeing any of them on the shelves around me. I did buy the Shawn Michaels and Undertaker Jakks figures when they appeared in the Index catalogue in 1996 I think. I was collecting the Hasbros MOC at that point so I bought them to keep MOC. I received the series 2 figures, not the series 1 guys pictured. When I sold them on a little later on and bought them again from Index then I received the series 1 figures that time, so that basically told me that they didn’t care much about the figures at all at that stage. I still have those in storage somewhere MOC. I never did get the mini Jakks figures though.

I never bought anything from Index but I do vividly remember being in primary school and learning about budgeting money (why we did that there and not at high school is beyond me!) and they handed out old Argos and Index catalogues for us to "buy" things from. Of course I got distracted and spent the whole lesson looking at the wrestling figure pages!

That definitely brings back memories - any time teachers gave us an Argos catalogue to cut-up for some project or other the whole thing would descend immediately into group discussions over the toy pages

Brilliant posts guys! Has really made me miss the days of yester-year and and some of the awesome sets and toys that were around in my childhood.
So much so, I've started collecting retro lego castle sets that I was never able to get as a kid. Anybody else into Lego here?

I remember the mini sets so well, think I had most of, if not, all of them. The first set I got was a ‘Buried Alive’ one with I believe Austin and Undertaker which came with a casket.

Ah I remember those too! The 4 figure sets that came shortly after the 6 figure ones. The figures looked like mini maximum sweat figures. I had the buried alive and inferno match sets. Buried Alive came with Undertaker, Austin, Vince and Triple H. Inferno Match came with Kane, X-Pac, Big Show and The Rock. There was another set the came with a hearse too and it included Viscera, Taker and I think the other two were Austin and Vince. There were a couple more of those 4 figure sets too, there was a ladder match one and another called 'Deadly Dungeon' which came with a similar tower to the inferno match set, minus the fire pieces and it came with a breakaway brick wall. The artwork on the boxes of those sets was pretty awesome!

Great thread and pics! I had many of those items, the hasbros, the wcw ring, the turtles and the van (always wanted that blimp but never got it!). Also had that batman figure and the batplane. Like your brother I was also more into the batman toys. Thanks for sharing!
