Max Moon
We kick it off here with a gimmick from the future!! or... outer space. Take your pick. Originally under the outfit was Konan who had some dark matches for the WWF during the Fall of 92 under the name of the ''Comet Kid''. Before he got to TV however he had a falling out with Vince which lead to his departure. Paul Diamond aka Kato from the Orient Express would take over the gimmick soon after. Diamond was pretty much a jobber all of 92 after his partner Tanaka left the company after the Rumble so taking this character was probably his best option all things considered.
The character would debut on an episode of Superstars in September to pretty much no reaction as well they probably had no clue what this gimmick was supposed to be! The big thing about the gimmick was during his entrance he had a ''jetpack'' that would propel him up the steps and also fireworks that would shoot from his arms. For the reminder of 92 he would really do nothing of note. I do recall a match he had with Repo Man during this period but again it was pretty clear this character was dying quick.
Max Moon's big moment would come on January 11th 1993 on the very 1st Monday Night Raw as he challenged Shawn Michaels for the WWF IC Title. For what it was it wasn't terrible but definitely nothing to write home about. His last televised appearance came at the Rumble later that month where he entered at number 8 and lasted just a few minutes before being eliminated by Jerry Lawler. Diamond would leave the WWF in February and like that the character was done.
In the roughly 6 months Max Moon was around he did nothing of note and I can understand why this character is forgotten with time. I do wish however we got a Hasbro fig though.

Ok so i’ll start with the good. He actually had some pretty good moves. I loved his spinning kick on his opponent into the corner. He did a rolling fallaway slam and his finisher was pretty cool. I checked a couple of his matches there and he would go up to the top rope, facing out to the crowd, twist in the air and catch a flying crossbody. Pretty lame by today’s standards but something different for the time.
Unfortunately, he was too gimmicky. I don’t know whether McMahon had his eye off the ball (steroid investigation may have been distracting him). If the character had stuck around, it’s hard to see what feuds he’d have, or any lasting impact in the WWF. It’s crazy to think that the WWF invested so much money in the costume, and with Paul Diamond replacing the original wrestler, surely there must have been some plan for the character?
But on a personal note, I quite liked him. I was 12, turning 13 when I first saw him and would have bought anything the WWF put out. And in some way he represents one of the reasons I love wrestling. Sometimes it’s so bad it’s good!!

Don't remember much about him, other than his short appearance in the Royal Rumble. I did not have cable at this time so I did not see too many Monday Night Raw shows, so I missed his match with HBK. Most shocking thing to me was finding out years later, after the Monday Night Wars, that the Konnan was the original wrestler to portray Max Moon. I think them adding Paul Diamond to replace Konnan to play Max Moon was due to the fact that they invested a lot of money in the character and didn't want to see it die so quickly. However, it did anyway. For me, this character didn't do anything for me, a little too gimmicky for my taste, and I was 11 at the time.

I often compare Max Moon to Glacier in terms of parallels between WWF and WCW, which is kind of funny, given how tremendously this flopped and the expanse of time between Moon's coming and going and Glacier's eventual debut. I think Glacier is at least remembered a bit more fondly by the fan base, but both characters are the result of a huge cash expenditure in piecing together an off the cuff character that ultimately amounted to very little.

I knew the gimmick was in trouble like I said when he made his debut to very little reaction. Vince tried his best to put em over on commentary but it wasn't working. He definitely had a unique, colorful look but other than that the gimmick was doomed.

Paul Diamond himself was actually an underrated worker for his time. But that gimmick would have tanked even if Konnan had stayed on board. On the other hand though, Max Moon would make for a pretty cool action figure if Mattel were ever so inclined to take that gamble........of which I'm sure they're not. Lol. But I would buy it.

Definitely agree. Loved The Bad Company team during the dying days of the AWA.
And yeah I'd buy a Max Moon figure for sure.

They would recycle this theme for the midgets and some of the lightweights during the late 90s.
Sounds like something out of the Toe Jam and Earl games from back in the day huh?

I have always liked masked wrestlers, so I thought he was cool even though it was hard to believe he was supposed to be from outer space. He had a cool Fireman's Carry/Forward Roll finisher that was innovative at the time. I had no idea it was Konnan under the mask until years later. In his ottobiography, Bret Hart said he learned how to do the Sharpshooter from Konnan when he was working in the WWF as Max Moon.

He worked for the WWF in 1991, off and on, at house shows, as Konnan before becoming Max Moon in 1992.

As dumb and absolutely forgettable as the Max Moon character is, I would buy an action figure of him in a HEARTBEAT.
And I don't even really collect anymore.

I liked Diamond as "Kato" better. Max Moon was one of those "jobber gimmicks" the WWF were doing at the time. Coulda been cool, in that time, if done better.

Orient Express I always thought were underrated as a team. Both matches they had at the Rumble 91 and 92 was fantastic I thought.

The Mountie
This gimmick started in late 1990. I remember on TV around that time they would air vignettes saying ''Whatever happened to Jacques Rougeau''? in which it would show him on a horse giving people a hard time. Right off the bat you could tell Jacques was having fun with this character and it showed. His 1st big match came at the Rumble in 91 as he fought Koko B .Ware in a decent little match I thought. A big part of his gimmick was his trusty ''shock stick'' which he used on many jobbers and known wrestlers during this time period. He started to gain more steam as at WM VII he defeated a former IC and Tag Champ in Tito Santana with the shock stick. Heenan as Mountie shocked Tito in the gut''I think it was something he ate!''
Here's the big feud the character is known for as not long after Mania he would start his classic feud with the Big Boss Man over who is the real law and order in the WWF. I'll never forget the incident on Superstars where the Nasty Boys would handcuff the Boss Man to the ropes which would allow Mountie to come down, talk trash on the mic and shock him at the same time. The feud would culminate at SSlam 91 in a ''Jailhouse match'' in which the Boss Man would finally get his revenge. The post match stuff is gold here as we see the Mountie carted away in a paddy wagon, booked, finger printed and thrown in jail all throughout the rest of the show. Big props to Jacques here as he sold everything perfectly.
During the Fall of 91 he would feud with the IC Champ at the time Bret Hart. On an episode of Superstars prior to SSeries that year he would face Bret but the match never took place as Jimmy Hart tossed water on Bret which allowed Mountie to shock em with the shock stick. Bret sold it like a pro. Gotta love those over the top shock stick buzz sounds!
They did have some interaction at the SSeries that year but the big blowoff was to have happen at the Rumble but Bret at the time was having contract disputes so right before the event at a house show they had Mountie go over em to win his 1st and only IC Title. Roddy Piper was next in line to feud with the new champ so that's our IC match for the Rumble. Piper would defeat the Mountie in pretty quick fashion to end his only 2 day reign as champ. Looking back I loved Piper got the belt but man I wish Mountie had a little run with it.
For the reminder of the characters run in 92 he would take part in an 8 man tag at WM VIII, have a brief feud with Slaughter, compete in an 6 man tag at SSlam 92(which didn't air on the US version) and was supposed to face the British Bulldog at SSeries 92 but those plans were scrapped and he left shortly before the event. All in all looking back I really enjoyed the Mountie character. Sure it was goofy and over the top at times but damn if Jacques didn't put all his energy in making it work. That in turn makes this gimmick memorable IMO.
And oh yeah his 1st theme>over his 2nd theme any day of the week

Was such a great heel. Sneaky, cowardly and egotistical. That summerslam performance was something else. It was so easy to suspend your disbelief and think this guy was really going to spend the night in the slammer.
I remember his feud with Piper, when the Mountie kept shocking him and Roddy got up everytime. In the end the “Scotsman” took his t shirt off to reveal a shock proof vast.
Although I slightly different twist to his gimmick but absolutely loved the Quebecars. One of my fondest memories of them was when Jacques would slap his hands together when the ref had his back turned and fool the ref into thinking he’d made a tag. The team was a good progression from the Mountie character and was good to see the man behind the gimmick enjoy a bit of success.
And the Mountie Hasbro figure was amazing

And the Mountie Hasbro figure was amazing I can honestly say I'm a big Jacques Rougeau fan. The guy was gold in the Fabulous Rougeaus along with his brother, The Mountie gimmick and like you talked about the Quebecers. Just entertaining all around.
I've recently purchased a Big Boss Man MOC vintage Hasbro figure circa 91 that's coming in the mail tomorrow. Now my goal is to get a Mountie figure. Whether it be the classic Habro or the Jakks version.

Yeah the guy was solid. Such a great undercard all round in the late eighties/early nineties. I agree with you that the Mounties first theme is better than his second but All-American Boys blows both themes out of the water!!

I was a fan at whatever Jacques did in wrestling. I loved The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers but I really loved The Mountie. Every time I would see him live I'd be standing on my chair singing his theme song. One time he looked over to me and told everyone that they should be as great as I was! It would have been cool to see him get a longer IC title reign but thinking back on it, of course The Mountie would only hold it for three days. lol.
The Quebecers were awesome and pairing them with Johnny "Also call me Raven" Polo was classic. Jean Pierre was also very underrated but he's more than making up for it now! That dude is jacked and kicking ass!!!
