Hillbilly JimIt was in late 1984 where we see our first glimpse of the man from Mud Lick Kentucky.Early on he was just a ''fan'' sitting ringside but that would change rather quickly. Roddy Piper would offer his services as a trainer but Hillbilly would already have that covered in the form of World Champion Hulk Hogan. This would kickstart a feud between the 2 sides but it wouldnt go far as HJ would injure his knee early on.This would lead to the Federation bringing in other ''family''members in the form of Cousins Luke/ Junior and Uncle Elmer. The first big feud would come in late 85 on SNME when Elmer would marry Joyce but it would be interrupted by both Roddy Piper and Jesse Ventura who would rip on the whole ceremony in classic fashion. This would lead to a big 6 man tag at the following SNME with the heels getting the W. At WM II, Jim would compete in the big WWF vs NFL battle royal but would come up short in the end.As 86 went on, the family members would disappear with the big man continuing on solo. He wouldnt do much of note for the remainder of the year but that would change in early 87 at WM III where he would team with the Haiti Kid and Little Beaver as they battled KKBundy and Little Tokyo and Lord Littlebrook. The faces would win in the end after Bundy would bodyslam Little Beaver.Again as the the year went on he was just another face on the roster on the lower end that is but still was over.In 88 he would appear in the first Rumble match but in the end would be eliminated by the big 747 One Man Gang. From there it was on to the battle royal at WM IV but once again he would come up short. The biggest match of his career would come at that years SSeries as he would be on team Mega Powers as they fought team Twin Towers.By 89 he was on his last legs wrestling wise as you would see on PTW and Superstars facing jobbers.Late that year he would do some commentary with Gorilla on MSG shows. He showed genuine emotion I'll give em that but I still didnt care for this stint. After being defeated by Quake on SNME post WM VI, he was pretty much done in the ring.As the years went on he would be used as an analyst on both PTW and All American. He would also appear on Mania with the Toddster in early 93. His last big role in the WWF would come in 96 as he would manage the Godwins. They would win the belts under his wing one time.He would disappear post WM XIII and with that was pretty much done minus his participation at WM XVII in the infamous gimmick battle royal. Overall....You cant talk about 80s wrestling characters and not bring up Hillbilly Jim.He never did anything groundbreaking but was still over during his time that's for sure. And I hear his HOF speech is still going as we speak! What are your memories of Hillbilly Jim? Share em below!

I don't know how long he was with WWF but he was also a Coliseum Video rep for WWF for years. A friend of mine worked for a video store, not a major one but like a "mom and pop shop" in the 1990s and said Hillbilly used to visit to promote the new releases. My friend said he liked Hillbilly because the food he brought for the employees was healthier than the donuts and snacks other video reps brought. I can see Hillbilly having a long term career with WWF. He's a very personable guy, fun loving guy with a smile all the time.

I know they used em to plug Mania in different cities during the RA era. I remember going to a mall right outside Philly in 07 and seeing em there along with Sandman

For some reason, my earliest memory of Hillbilly Jim is from when I rented a videotape once, where he showed us some sort of training area he had set up in his house. Well, a mat on the floor anyway. It's at least 25-30 years since I've seen this but I'm sure that I am not imagining it.
He was fun to watch in the ring.

Great theme music, fun character, but as Bruce Prichard says often "and then the bell rings". Hillbilly was okay in squashes because it didn't ask much of him, but he wasn't going to produce any classics.

By the time I got into wrestling he was pretty much a jobber to the stars. He beat the jobbers on superstars and challenge, but he always lost to the top talent. He was fun, but nothing earth-shattering. I feel like these are the wrestlers that wrestling is missing now, guys who are true mid-card talent, meant to beat the low-card guys but always lose to the top stars. Top stars today (and for some time now) lose to often on TV, they don't seem special anymore.

According to Dutch Mantel, Hillbilly Jim was a heck of a basketball player who played for 3 different colleges. After hearing this, I can only visualize him playing in overalls, long hair & with a bushy beard.
