Wasn’t his character’s story that he a corrupt ref who helped the Hart Foundation win so he was fired as a ref and became a wrestler for Jimmy Hart & the Hart Foundation and eventually saw the errors of his ways and was reinstated as a ref? That was pretty much all there was to it. Unless you are asking the backstage reason that Vince did that storyline?

The guy was always getting his ass whooped as a wrestler, so refereeing was better for him

Jack Tunney suspended him for life in early 87 for being a corrupt ref. His run as a wrestler lasted until after WM V where they would put em back in the ref role.
The ''Dangerous'' Danny Davis character was fun in the beginning as he got great heel heat but after awhile that faded away and he was just used as a jobber.

Davis used to wrestle as Mr. X while referring in 1986 anyhow. So turning him heel and having him go with the Hart Foundation just made for a good story line!

He opened a wrestling school and local promotion in Louisville, KY responsible for launching the careers of all time greats such as John Cena, Randy Orton, Batista, and Brock Lesnar. Oh wait, wrong Danny Davis.

Was sorta big in the Memphis territory (CWA/USWA) in the era of Lawler, Jerry Jarrett, Dutch Mantell, etc.

That's correct, good sir!
Funny thing is, if you look back at Davis, he was a pretty big dude. Like not muscular built, but just kind of thick chested and such. He did his job well.
I remember his feud in 1988 with Sam Houston. I am not sure who that ended up benefiting in the end?? Ha ha ha!!

I'd say neither.

Maybe Davis did. Houston got released where Davis still had a job at referring again!
