A nondescript man in a suit steps out of a limousine and walks with a purpose through the backstage area of the Staples Center. He stops every so often to ask one of the many staffers for directions, eventually ending up in front of the door to Lila Sleater’s temporary office for the night.
He knocks politely on the door, waits patiently tapping his feet until it opens. Lila Sleater, dressed to the nines in a fancy evening gown, sees who it is and immediately invites him into her office. The gentleman, a consummate professional, nods his head in thanks, and follows her inside.
Inside the temporary office is a couch, a desk, a large TV monitor currently displaying the WFWF logo, and a table. On the table are five trophies: each one a moment frozen in time of a wrestler lifting his opponent over his head in the gorilla press position.Lila Sleater: You have them? man: Yes m’am. He reaches inside his jacket and pulls out four sealed envelopes, each labeled WFWF _____ of the Year 2018.Lila Sleater: You’re positive the results are clean. No tampering like that hack Hickenbottom reported? man: Absolutely m’am. I’d stake my job on it. Lila gives the man a stern look.Lila Sleater: You just did. man: I assure you Ms. Sleater that the firm of Dewey, Cheatem, and Howe always gets the job done right. The integrity of the results is impeccable. Lila fondles the envelopes like long lost children.Lila Sleater: I’m counting on these award presentations to show the WFWF at its best. I don’t want anything tarnishing our image. The gentleman from the accounting firm of Dewey, Cheatem, and Howe coughs, look sat Lila slightly startled.man: As you say madam. We have done our part. I’ll be on my way. Lila Sleater: Fine. Thank you. You can see yourself out. Lila goes back to admiring the trophies, picking one up to wipe a smudge off it.Lila Sleater: This night better go perfect. Tonight we shut up all those basement dwelling naysayers full of doom and gloom. The shot backs away into the hall as Lila closes the door to her office.
Cue the pyro, loud music, blinding lights, and show some WFWF highlights on the TunaTron because it's show time.
Welcome to WFWF Resolution! Alecia Matthew: Welcome one and all to the Staples Center in Los Angeles for the start of a new year as the WFWF presents Resolution! Daniel Knight: It’s going to be one helluva night for all our fans. A card full of main event caliber matches AND the Best of 2018 Awards! Alecia Matthews: I’ve been looking forward to this since before Christmas when the return of the Best of the Year awards was announced. Daniel Knight: As have I Alecia. There were no awards last year, no awards show two years ago. This is a return to the good old days. Alecia Matthews: Well we don’t have to wait any longer Daniel. It looks like we’re about to get our first presentation of the night right now! Whiskey in Mind by Christian Kane hits the PA system, as the fans rise to their feet cheering! Out from behind the curtain, envelope in hand and wearing a David F’n Brennan shirt (now sold out) is WFWF superfan, actor, and musician…Christian Kane! The country superstar with the locks for days takes his place at the podium.Christian Kane: WHAT’S UP LA? Cheap pop, but it’s accepted graciously.Daniel Knight: Who is this guy? He looks familiar. Alecia Matthews: Well he’s wearing a David Brennan shirt. He’s either an alcoholic or a terribly misguided individual. Daniel Knight: Nah. That face. He looks like Mala… Christian Kane: Ladies and gentlemen, I was asked here tonight by the WFWF higher ups to present to you all a VERY prestigious award. MATCH! OF! THE! YEAR! The crowd goes nuts, as they know what’s coming.Christian Kane: Now allow me to direct you to the TunaTron and see the final nominees! David Brennan versus Michael Kyzer at End Time! Needles versus Priceless at London Calling! And Drakz versus David Brennan versus Michael Kyzer at London Calling! The fans go ballistic at the mention of the final match.Christian Kane: Well, I see who all you here in the Staples Center really want to see get this award. The camera pans to the award, a golden wrestler gorilla pressing another.Christian Kane: But…let’s see if you get what y’all want. And the WINNER IS… The crowd drumrolls.Christian Kane: DRAKZ… Lila Sleater: GET THE HELL OFF OF MY STAGE. From behind the curtain comes Lila Sleater, pushing Christian Kane away from the podium on the entrance stage.Lila Sleater: Clearly the winner, as his name was only nominated in one, was Drakz versus Brennan versus Kyzer…but no way in HELL am I going to let any combination of those three get up on this stage. I’m not about to air attempted homicide on live television... had e’f***in’uff of that earlier with Satan spawn. So on their behalf, I’m going to accept this award and hand it out appropriately. Congratulations to the winners. Christian Kane has his hands up confused, and the fans are booing Lila for not giving them what they wanted.Alecia Matthews: Well that was special. Apparently Lila Sleater is the winner for Match of the Year. Daniel Knight: She better hope that none of the actual wrestlers from the match are in the building. Not a single one of them would have a problem pile driving her through a table to get their trophy. Alecia Matthews: That might get us a ratings pop. Heh heh. Daniel Knight: Moving on… it’s time for our first match of the evening. It’s sure to be a knockdown drag out brawl between two certifiable monsters: Ryan “Needles” Payne versus Tugarin Zmey! The lights go out. The fans in the arena react quickly, yelling insults and generally booing Needles out of the building. Music begins to play starting with a guitar solo leading to the inclusion of drums and climaxing in an immense wail from the lead singer. The second the vocals hit the arena is bombarded with a sea of extreme flashing lights. The colours are a blur at first. The lights trigger Needles entrance to the stage where he is met with another round of boos mixed with many an ‘expletives' that simply can’t be censored out by production staff back in the truck.
Needles walks to the ring oblivious to the fans, or maybe he is silently soaking it all in enjoying his reputation as a bringer of chaos, pain, and suffering. He enterss the ring, leans back in one corner and waits.
As has become his unique style, Tugarin Zmey appears on the entrance stage to no fanfare. No music. No pyro. No flashy lights. Just seven feet of pure destructive force focused on the ring… and his opponent waiting patiently for the giant.
Zmey walks slowly but covers the ground quickly thanks to his long strides. As he walks, the crowd is eerily silent, still unsure what to make of the Dragon now that he answers to no man.
Zmey enters the ring and calmly stares a hole in Needles while Christa gets about her business.Christa Adina: Ladies and gentlemen, to my left, standing 1.85 meters and weighing 225 pounds… from Glasgow, Scotland… Ryan “NEEEEEEDLES” Payne! More boos for the Scottish psychopath.Christa Adina: And to my right, standing 7 feet tall and weighing over 400 pounds… currently residing in Seattle, Washington… The DRAAAAGON Tugarin ZMEEEEEEY! The reaction is typical for the monster: lots of boos. But surprisingly there are few scattered cheers, most likely from fans who dislike Needles more than they dislike Zmey. In their eyes, the lesser of two evils gets to be the white knight tonight.
Christa makes her way out of the ring to sit at the timekeepers table while the ref ostensibly checks both men for foreign objects - fact is either or both could have smuggled a shotgun into the ring given how cursory the check was but that’s the referee roulette wheel landing on a more lenient referee for this match. He gets out of the way of the two wrestlers and signal for the bell.
DING DING DING!Alecia Matthews: I hope the paramedics are ready. I have a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that somebody is gonna’ get hurt here. Daniel Knight: That outcome certainly fits the M.O. of both men. So far though, it’s shockingly clean. Sure they’re each throwing heavy hands and chops trying to drive the other into a corner but no excessive violence yet. Alecia Matthews: Whoa, Tugarin is using his clear size and strength advantage to whip Needles all over the ring, hitting him with an array of throws and slams. Nice suplex quickly followed up with a skull crushing DDT. Alecia Matthews: Needles head has to be ringing after that! In the ring, Tugarin has gained the upper hand. He’s picking up where he left off in his last match against Frank Lynn, hitting Needles with power move after power move trying to break him down. The fighter from Glasgow tries to run but again and again Zmey takes a few huge steps and catches him.
Tugarin smells the blood in the water and makes his move. He lifts Needles over his head in a gorilla press and stands facing over the ropes towards the announcers table. He prepares to toss Needles outside the ring when Needles reaches down and grabs his mask, tearing away at it. Unable to remove the mask, he twists it around until the eyeholes are no where near Zmey’s eyes. Unable to see, Zmey tries to throw Needles but Needles grabs the ropes and catches himself on the apron. He yells loudly in pain, as if he hit the floor hard.
Zmey is fooled by Needles chicanery and relaxes, taking a moment to try and straighten his mask. Needles jumps on the opening, slingshotting between the middle and top rope to spear Zmey and knock the big man down to the mat.Alecia Matthews: Needles has Zmey down! I’m not so sure about his tactics but there’s no denying they worked. Zmey is blind and Needles is relentless. Daniel Knight: Technically there’s no rule against messing with Zmeys mask. It’s not like he grabbed a handful of trunks during a pin attempt. Alecia Matthews: True but its still an underhanded tactic. Daniel Knight: Well now you just sound like Frank Lynn, resident boy scout of the WFWF. it doesn’t matter anyway. The ref is letting it go and now Needles is pounding away at Zmey. Needles pours it on as fast and hard as he can, not giving Zmey a chance to recover or fix his mask. He does the Garvin stomp, each time his boot connects with Zmey in a blatant attempt to break a limb. He drops multiple elbows to Zmey’s chest, forearm smashes to the face from off the second rope, and more stomps.
Zmey takes all the punishment Needles can dish out, either not feeling the pain or not willing to let Needles see him hurting. The crowd starts to get behind Zmey, cheering for the big comeback.
It doesn’t happen as Needles wrenches the mask even further out of position just as Zmey almost had it back to normal. Then he picks up the Dragon for the Lasting Impression. He can’t hold Zmey in position though. Tugarin drops down to his feet and has Needles draped over his back head down. Zmey drops to his knees, driving Needles into the mat.Daniel Knight: Can you believe it. With one move Zmey just stopped all the momentum Needles had built up. Alecia Matthews: That’s the sheer power of the Dragon. All it takes is one move. Now he can fix his mask… there you go. Daniel Knight: Zmey is not pleased with Needles and he’s letting out every bit of anger in another vicious assault. I can’t tell if Needle sis spending more time flying through the air or laying on his back. Alecia Matthews: Indeed Daniel. Zmey is large and in charge! Daniel Knight: Tell me you did not just say that. Alecia Matthews: I did… and I’m sorry. It won’t happen again. Zmey’s all out assault ends with a clothesline that sends Needles head over heels ove rthe top rope down to the floor. The referee starts a count but Zmey gently grabs him and signals “no”. And that is the end of any count out. Zmey steps over the top rope to the apron.
Suddenly, Needles charges, his trusty baseball bat in hand. he swings at Zmey’s shins attempting to knock the giant off his feet. Zmey shows amazing agility by jumping over the bat, then quickly leaping down to the floor.
Needles charges again, attempting a clothesline with the baseball bat. Zmey once again shows speed a man his size should not have and steps out of the way. The bat impacts the ring post with a church bell like clang.
Needles turns to Zmey again, charges. Zmey stands his ground, then raises his right leg and his big boot floats over the bat to connect with Needles face. Needles crashes to the floor mats with a thud. The crowd cheers. They love seeing Needles suffer.Alecia Matthews: Needles is trying all the tricks he can with the baseball bat but Zmey is continually one step ahead. Daniel Knight: Is there an actual intelligent wrestler behind that mask, one who studies film of his opponents? Alecia Matthews: Who knew? Maybe Kyzer has been holding him back all these years. The look on Needles’ expression says he knows he bit off more than he can chew. The giant who already owns victories over Drakz and Frank Lynn is now dismantling him outside the ring and the ref has been intimidated into letting it all happen.
Needles’ face meets the ring post and the ring steps. Needles’ back meets the security barriers and the ring apron (it’s the hardest part of the ring you know!). Needles slumps to his knees, the desperation showing on his face. He can’t take much more of this beating.
That’s when he reaches into his pants and pulls out the hypodermic needle that he has become infamous for using. He raises it over his head and swings at Zmey. Zmey reacts with catlike reflexes, grabbing Needles’ wrist and stopping the intended blow in its tracks. Then he starts to push back… further and further until Needles elbow is behind his head and his wrist bent backwards at a painful angle. Needles screams, drops the needle.
Zmey releases his grip on Needles wrist, then hits the Mongolian Chop driving Needles down to his knees… just in time for his face to meet Zmey’s knee with a bone jarring crunch.Alecia Matthews: I think Needles may need to visit the dentist after that knee. Daniel Knight: It looks Zmey is done playing with his food. He’s gorilla press slamming Payne over the top rope back into the ring. Alecia Matthews: There’s no doubt Zmey is the strongest man in the WFWF. That was impressive. Needles is no small man after all. Zmey enters the ring as only he can, jumping onto the apron and then stepping over the top rope. Needles tries to run away but once again the Dragn’s giant strides close the gap quickly and he grabs Needles by the head. literally by the head, Zmey’s giant hand wrapped around Needles like Shaquille O’Neal palming a basketball.
Zmey hefts Needles onto his shoulders and doesn’t waste any time in immediately slamming him into the mat with a Mandate of the Dragon. Then he very calmly, almost disturbingly slowly goes for the cover.
1… 2… 3!Christa Adina: Ladies and gentlemen, the winner of the match… the Dragon Tugarin ZMEEEEEEY! Alecia Matthews: Tugarin continues his run of dominance. Can anybody stop him? Daniel Knight: Not Needles, at least not tonight. It’s only a matter of time before Zmey is in the hunt for a title. If I’m one of our current champions, I’m looking over my shoulder worried that Zmey will pick me. Alecia Matthews: Champions are used to being the prey but have any of them dealt with a predator quite like this new Dragon?

Alecia Matthews: Now it’s time to find out whose has been voted the Comeback of the Year.
Daniel Knight: I can’t help thinking this one’s going to be a battle between the two sides of tonight’s main event.
Alecia Matthews: Don't forget about Tugarin Zmey.
“Standing in the light, you’re so self-congratulatory”, there’s an air of uncertainty among the sell out crowd as Frank Black’s ‘You Ain’t Me’ hits over the loudspeakers.
It may be unfamiliar entrance music, but to the surprise of the packed Staples Centre, it’s the familiar face of Joe Bishop who appears at the top of the ramp, to probably the most positive reception he's ever had. The former National, International and World Champion makes his way over to the podium, and begins to speak to the WFWF universe.
Joe Bishop: The speech I’m supposed to give, the speech I said I’d give, is about how great it is to be back, about how strong the competition was for this one, and then I’m supposed to congratulate the winner of the comeback of the year award and let you all know that it’s mine next year.
I’m not gonna do that. And I’m sorry, but I’m not going to make out that the award I’m here to present, the ‘comeback of the year’ is one to be proud of. I’ll elaborate, don’t worry, but I do want to indulge myself a little.
The Englishman’s smug smile is replaced, momentarily, by something more stoic and stern.
Joe Bishop: The last year and a half has been the toughest of my career. I have been fighting day after day, night after night, to overcome an injury that stopped me in my tacks just as I’d started to assert myself at the top of this promotion.
I know people come back after an injury and they say things like ‘the doctors told me I’d never wrestle again.’ Maybe they tell you you’re risking your life if you get back in that ring – heck that’s what at least one of the nominees says he was told. People do love to exaggerate.
Daniel Knight: Probably not a good fight to pick right now Joe.
Joe Bishop: I was never told that. It was never a case of wondering whether I could make it back or not. I knew I’d be back. I don’t feel the need to tell you otherwise, just because it’d be a better story.
But what I was told, wasn’t trivial. What I was told, was that I’d never be as good as I was prior to the injury.
I was told that, realistically, I could be an attraction every now and then, pick up my SuperBrawl pay-cheque Yukio Blaze style, but I couldn’t hope to compete.
The former champion really emphasizes that last point, clearly still bitter about the suggestion.
Joe Bishop: You know you hear that sort of thing, and it does drive you on. It really does make you desperate to prove them wrong. And after a year and half of fighting to get back to being, I believe, the best in the world… I started to think to myself, how can I prove it? How can I prove that I’m still that good?
I thought back to the ease with which I ploughed through the competition in the Supreme Gauntlet, and contrasted that with the brutal hard fought wins I’d had in Japan the year before. I thought about the jokes I was forced to compete with here, the like of ‘The Future’, Austin Hayes, Anna Ahriman.
I saw the stuff on social media, Drakz complaining about Penny being handed a title shot, and I thought, he’s right. I thought, how could either one of these people be proud of their ‘comebacks’ when they’re thrust straight back to the top without having to work for it.
I saw Allen Neil saying the WFWF isn’t the only show in town – and though the real competition probably isn’t this promotion he’s peddling – he’s right.
I got a very nice offer to come to WFWF and I thought – this is a great chance to let wrestling fans around the world know that I’m going to prove it, and I might just need to look further afield than this place, to do that.
The excitement that greeted Bishop’s arrival has well and truly soured now, the WFWF fans not remotely impressed with his soapbox antics.
Joe Bishop: The nominees are the same people you’ve had pushed down your throat for the last ten years, and the winner is… whoever’s music they play now, adios.
Daniel Knight: Joe Bishop folks, still on his high horse, still as tedious as ever.
Everyone’s least favourite ear piercing screech hits the PA and the crowd boos like crazy at the idea that this man is being celebrated for his return to the WFWF.
Alecia Matthews: Oh great.
Daniel Knight: Who else!
Bishop walks from the podium and looks to leave back through the curtain, but as he approaches it a fellow Brit in the form of Drakz emerges and stands directly in front of him. He eyes Bishop, looking much more stern than any of us are used to.
Daniel Knight: Are these two going to throw hands right here?
Bishop tries to walk around the champion but Drakz takes a step to the left to remain in his path. Bishop takes a step back and Drakz looks him up and down before then cracking a smile and pushing past the former champion. Shoulder checking him. Bishop isn’t here to be antagonized tonight and, with a deep breath, continues on his original trajectory, disappearing to the back as Drakz takes the stand. The crowd boos as you’d expect and Drakz, ever patient, just waits them out.
Alecia Matthews: He might be waiting a while if he’s expecting this crowd to calm down.
And he does. But eventually they do.
Drakz: Do you know what this award symbolizes for me?
The jeers begin to rise again.
Drakz: Of course you don’t. This award, for me, embodies the very notion that you f*cking ingrates can’t get rid of me. Trace Demon can’t get rid of me. Michael Kyzer can’t get rid of me, and he’s come close twice now. I am The Constant, and this…..
He lifts the trophy.
Drakz: …….this is proof that even after everything I’ve suffered at the hands of jealous nobodies, I’m still the Man the People Paid to See. Love me or hate me, you still all bought a ticket for my main event. And as for this…..
He now lifts the WFWF World Heavyweight Championship into the air.
Drakz: ……this proves that I never should have f*cking been dethroned. Two matches. That’s all it took. One to take aim, and one to pull the trigger. I’m the f*cking man, and irregardless of what that whining piss ant Joe Bishop thinks, I deserve this. Don’t you forget that.
He smiles with his lips closed, like the slow kid on school picture day, holding his trophy in one hand and the title in the other, arms out wide, before spinning on the spot, pirouetting back to centre stage and walking to the back ahead of his match with Penny Shannon later tonight.
Daniel Knight: And you can’t argue with him.
Alecia Matthews: No. You can’t. I think everyone else in this building would have a good go.
The lights go down and Anthem of the Space starts playing over the Staples Center sound system, as if Lila was back at the gorilla position trying to wipe any remnants of Bishop’s presentation and Drakz’ acceptance speech from the audience’s mind as quickly as possible.
Frank Lynn walks out on stage in a referee shirt, jeans, and sneakers. No title belt around his waist or over his shoulder. He’s not here to wrestle tonight. He’s here to referee a match. Frank smiles and waves to the fans who give him a warm reception.
He quickly makes his way to the ring to stand beside Christa Adina.
Christa Adina: Ladies and gentlemen, the following match will determine the number one contender to the WFWF International Championship. Introducing first, the special guest referee and current International Champion Frank Lynn.
Major System Error blasts from the sound system as Tyler Draven appears on stage. He raises his arms up and down several times to get a reaction from the crowd, a surprisingly positive one given his reputation. He runs to the ring shedding his leather jacket halfway down the ramp and leaping into the ring under the bottom rope to somersault to a standing position in front of Frank Lynn.
After a tense moment, he extends his hand towards Frank who reluctantly shakes it.
The soft strokes of a piano echo throughout the arena. A pinch of light dims at the center of the stage with a faint white smoke. The notes get louder and louder with accompanying orchestra and chorus vocals. The words "War is God" flash on the screen over and over again, endlessly. The beat drops and the epic orchestral rendition of "Gangsta's Paradise" hammers the arena with a large thud, like an atomic bomb landed at its epicenter.
A figure emerges from the stage with a grin of his face. Ante Whitner glimmers in a white boxing robe, hopping around for a bit of momentum going into the matchup. He shakes out his hands, stretches his arms, and cracks his neck, smiling as he's ready to "redeem" his next target. The "Redeemer" walks down the ramp with swagger and the thunderous orchestral rendition of his classic theme song in the background.
He enters the ring and takes off the pale white robe, revealing the soldier he is underneath with camo gear and a propensity for violence. The smoke fades from the arena as Whitner stares down his opponent and mouths the word “redemption”.
Christa Adina: And now, introducing to my left… standing 5 feet 11 inches and weighing 180 pounds… from Los Angeles, California…
Christa is interrupted by a loud pop from the crowd, one that is ready to cheer for the man from LA just because he is from LA.
Christa Adina: …Tyler DRAAAVVVEEENNN!
The crowd continues to cheer for Draven, something he is not necessarily used to as seen by the surprised look on his face.
Christa Adina: And to my right… standing 6 feet 1 inch and weighing 215 pounds from Yonkers, New York… The Redeemer Ante WHIIITTTNNNEEERRR!
The crowd boos loudly, not taking kindly to anyone from NY, particularly the unpredictable and violent Ante Whitner.
Frank Lynn ignores the crowd and searches each wrestler for foreign objects. Then he beckons both men to the center of the ring and asks them to shake hands.
Daniel Knight: What the hell is Frank doing? Since when is it required that wrestlers shake hands before a match. This isn’t Ring of Dignity or Legacy. This is the WFWF!
Alecia Matthews: Perhaps Frank is just trying to set a tone for them: put on a good clean match and may the better man win.
Daniel Knight: I’m sure that will happen. So sure I’m going to call my bookie to place a bet right now. A thousand bucks says we get a clean match.
While neither man seems to want to shake hands, for Frank’s benefit they do. But neither man releases his grip. Instead, they both pull the other in close so that they butt foreheads. No words are spoken but the message is clear. This is war.
Frank separates them back to their corners so they don’t start fighting before Christa can exit the ring. As soon as she is clear, Frank steps back, signals for the bell, and claps his hands together letting Ante and Tyler know it’s time to fight!
DING DING DING!
They charge at each other like two enraged bulls and lock up in the center of the ring. It doesn’t take long for everyone to see that this isn’t going to be a technical masterpiece, it’s going to be a brawl. They start by throwing punches but Frank Lynn quickly steps in to warn them “No closed fists!” They switch to uppercuts to the face chops to the chest, and kicks to the legs. It becomes a battle of wills as both men are hitting the other with deadly intentions but neither is willing to give the other a sign of weakness.
Daniel Knight: It’s been a back and forth affair so far. Just when Tyler gets the upper hand, Ante comes back with a vengeance.
Alecia Matthews: And then Tyler bounces right back with a counter of his own. this one is an even match.
Daniel Knight: Surprising considering Ante has the experience edge over the still wet behind the ears Draven.
The first few minutes of the match fly by as the fans cheer on every counter and offensive move by Draven and boo Ante whenever he is in charge of the action. Both men feed off the crowd reaction and the brawl increases in intensity.
Ante whips Tyler into the ropes and takes him down with a Lou Thesz Press, then rains down heavy forearm blows to Tyler’s head. Without thinking about it, Ante forms a fist and straight up punches Tyler in the jaw. Frank immediately jumps in and grabs Ante’s arm preventing him from striking with his fist again. Ante scowls at Frank and pushes him away. Frank pulls at the WFWF logo on his referee shirt and warns Ante to not touch him again.
Tyler takes advantage of the distraction and squirms free of Ante. Ante tries to kick Draven, but he catches Ante’s leg, then swings it downwards with such force that Ante falls face first onto the mat.
Alecia Matthews: Tyler is on the offensive now. What a nice string of moves to keep Ante off his game. A power slam followed by a clothesline followed by running knee to the face.
Daniel Knight: Tyler looks good but he owes it to Frank Lynn. If the referee hadn’t distracted Ante… well this might be a completely different match.
Alecia Matthews: I say good for Frank. It’s about time we had a ref who enforced the rules.
Tyler slaps Ante in the Camel Clutch, adding a clubbing forearm across Ante’s face every so often to stymie his attempts to escape. When Ante stops resisting, Tyler screams at Frank “Ask him!” Frank drops to his knees to check on Ante, looking him directly in his eyes while grabbing a limp wrist and raising it up, then watching it drop back down. Frank repeats the test and again the arm drops limply.
Frank yells at Ante “This is it. One more time and it’s over. Are you done Ante?” Frank then lifts Ante’s arm for the third and final time. Ante summons up whatever strength he has left, stops his arm from falling, and then turns his hand towards Frank so he can flip him off.
Then Ante smiles and nods his head in the direction of the ropes. He has managed to get a foot on the bottom rope! Frank tells Tyler to break the hold but he doesn’t. Frank counts… 1… 2… 3… 4… Just before Frank can say five Tyler finally releases Ante from the Camel Clutch. Frank warns Tyler about pushing his luck and Tyler shrugs at him. “I’ve got ’til five to break the hold. Any good ref knows that!”
Alecia Matthews: Frank is just doing his job and neither Ante nor Tyler is cutting him any slack.
Daniel Knight: Could that have anything to do with the fact that they are fighting for the opportunity to face Frank Lynn for his International title so there is no good reason for Frank to cut either man any slack?
Alecia Matthews: I don’t see it. Frank has called it down the middle so far. Ante and Tyler need to concentrate on each other and ignore Frank Lynn.
After a few more minutes of back and forth action, Ante rolls out of the ring to gather himself. Tyler looks on not sure whether he should chase Ante down or wait for Frank to finish his count. Frank calmly starts a twenty count, accompanied by the vocal crowd.
When Frank gets to the low teens, Ante approaches the ring apron. Tyler doesn’t wait for Ante to get in the ring. He reaches over the ropes and tries to grab Ante’s head. Bald heads are hard to get a good grip on so Tyler is left empty handed, his arms flailing over the top rope. Ante reaches under the ropes, grabs Tyler’s legs, and yanks him out of the ring. The two start fighting outside the ring, exchanging chops until Tyler drives Ante into the ring post.
Frank foregoes a count and jumps out of the ring. He tries to get between Ante and Tyler and force them back into the ring. Simultaneously, Ante and Tyler chop at each other but end up hitting Frank. Acting out of instinct, Frank chops back at both.
All three have a stare down until Frank once again pulls at the WFWF logo and reminds them who is in charge. Then he points in the ring and says “Now! Or this ends a double DQ! No winner, no title shot!”
Daniel Knight: Frank is overstepping his role. He just struck the wrestlers! Refs don’t do that!
Alecia Matthews: It’s not the usual way our referees operate but I like it. He’s not taking any crap. It’s working too as Tyler and Ante are getting back in the ring.
Once back in the ring, it is Ante who takes charge, surprising Tyler with a renewed vigor and hard hitting offense. A standing drop kick that rocks Tyler followed by a side russian leg sweep and diving elbow drop. Tyler makes it to his feet only for Ante to put him in a sleeper hold.
The next few minutes pass slowly as Ante continues to ride Tyler’s back while trying to put him to sleep but Tyler is able to fight the hold, not giving up. Ante drives Tyler to his knees but he makes it back to his feet. Ante grapevines his legs around Tyler’s waist making it even harder to breath. Tyler wobbles around on unsteady legs, trying to break the hold by bouncing Ante off the turnbuckles.
Alecia Matthews: He’s been in that sleeper hold for what seems like forever yet he won’t give up. The crowd support has to be what is keeping Tyler awake.
Daniel Knight: Well, there is an argument to be made that he could have been a front runner for Rookie of the Year if not for Lila excluding him from the Vanguard Tournament. This is his chance to shove that decision right back in Lila’s face and get himself a date with Frank Lynn for the more prestigious International Championship.
Alecia Matthews: Tyler did it! He broke the hold with a stunner!
More back and forth action as neither Ante nor Tyler is willing to give an inch. The lure of championship gold has given way to a simple desire to beat the man opposite them in the ring.
Tyler resorts to some traditional wrestling moves, taking Ante down with snap mares and hip tosses, backing away after each to gather himself and do it again. Tyler tries another snap mare but Ante blocks, tries one of his own. Tyler blocks then brings his arm around for a vicious clothesline. Ante falls to the mat but as he does he kicks out and catches Tyler in the jaw sending him crashing to the mat as well.
Seeing both men down and neither making any move to get back to their feet, Frank starts a standing ten count. That inspires quick action as Ante kips up and Tyler does a much less dramatic but equally effective process of propping himself up and simply standing to face Ante.
Alecia Matthews: This has been a great match between two evenly matched opponents. And Frank has done a fine if not slightly enthusiastic job as referee.
Daniel Knight: You sound surprised Alecia. What did you expect?
Alecia Mathews: Honestly? Given the reputations of Tyler and Ante, I expected weapons, blood, and all the usual carnage.
Daniel Knight: I can understand you expecting that of Ante, given how he once requested a flaming barbwire death match, but what has Tyler Draven done to deserve such a low opinion?
Alecia Matthews: Trace Demon? Barbwire baseball? Any of that ring a bell for you.
Daniel Knight: That was one incident and it wasn’t even during a match. It’s time to move past it.
Alecia Matthews: Easier said than done Daniel.
While Daniel and Alecia continue to argue, Ante and Tyler are tearing away at each other. Ante hits a double knee face breaker followed by a failed pin attempt. Tyler comes back at Ante with a buckle bomb into a belly to belly overhead suplex followed by a failed pin attempt of his own.
The Ante tries to whip Tyler across the ring. Tyler reverses and sends Ante running out of control across the ring… and straight into Frank Lynn. They hit hard and end up in the corner of the ring, Frank sandwiched between Ante and the turnbuckles. Tyler flies in for a big splash that Ante ducks out of the way so Frank takes the full impact.
Ante quickly rolls up Tyler for a pin attempt. He holds on tight and waits for the count from the ref… a count that never comes. An irate Frank Lynn yells at both of them “Either one of you touches me again and you are DISQUALIFIED!”
Shocked and more than a little pissed off that Frank isn’t counting the pin, Ante releases his hold of Tyler and gets right in Frank’s face. Tyler hits a clubbing blow to the back of Ante’s head, then lifts him up and drops him down with the Dead Demon Driver. He quickly goes for a cover.
1… 2… 3!
DING DING DING!
Christa Adina: Ladies and gentlemen, the winner of the match and new number one contender to the International Championship… Tyler Draven!
Daniel Knight: What the hell was that? Ante had the match won but Frank didn’t make the count!
Alecia Matthews: Frank felt it was more important to establish order… and protect himself from further physical contact.
Daniel Knight: That’s great for Frank but what about Ante? I guess its congratulations to Tyler Draven, the new number one contender but he might want to get out of dodge now because Ante is not taking this well.
Indeed, back in the ring Ante is raging in Frank’s face, using language we’d rather not repeat here. Then Ante slaps Frank and the fight is on. Frank retaliates in kind leading to both men rolling around the ring pummeling each other. Tyler steps in, trying to pull Ante off Frank only to get dragged down into a three way scramble that has them falling out of the ring and fighting at ringside.
Entering the scene at their usual just a few minutes too late to make a difference pace, security appears and breaks the three men apart. As they are separated, a familiar figure appears on stage.
Lila Sleater: Good job Frank. I assigned you as special referee so you could make sure we got a clean match and a definitive winner. So what did you do? You f***ed it up royally and now I have to clean up your mess. I need to think about it so you will all have to wait until Las Vegas to hear what my decision is. Suffice it to say that the outcome of this match has in no way cemented anybody as the number one contender!
Lila makes a quick exit to get out of range of the fans who are booing her. Security tries and fails to keep Frank Lynn, Ante Whitner, and Tyler Draven separated as all three have valid reasons to be angry and are taking it out on each other. Every time security gets one man under control, the other two get loose and start fighting.
Eventually, amidst cheers from the crowd to “Let them fight!”, Billy Broom and his staff join up with security to finally separate Tyler, Ante, and Frank. Frank is escorted up the ramp, Ante is escorted around the side of the stage, and Tyler is escorted through the crowd to yet a third entrance backstage.
Alecia Matthews: Las Vegas should be very interesting. I can’t wait to hear what Lila’s decision is.
Daniel Knight: I’m calling my bookie again right now to bet that whatever her decision is, neither Frank. Tyler, or Ante is gonna’ like it.
Alecia Matthews: If I was a gambling woman, I’d take a piece of that action.
We cut backstage and see a still angry Lila Sleater power walking down a corridor holding the Match of the Year award. I guess as a three way it’s been taken into the remit of the company itself?
Unknown voice from off screen: I’ll be taking that.
A hand reaches in and snatches the trophy from her grasp. The camera swings a little to reveal Drakz, already holding his Comeback of the Year trophy in the other hand.
Drakz: Yoink!
Sleater opens her mouth to oppose but Drakz has already walked away and back out of shot, leaving Lila shaking her head and wondering how she’s ended up back with this piece of garbage as her top champion.

Daniel Knight: And now the Best of 2018 Awards continue.
Alecia Mathews: This should be an interesting presentation to say the least.
Daniel Knight: Let’s hope it goes better than the first two awards.
The lights dim and a spotlight shines down on the entrance as “The Anthem of the Space” plays. Out steps Frank Lynn, still in his referee gear but with his trademark bomber jacket on over top. He is joined by his manager Daphne, fully decked out in her black leather wrestling gear.
Frank steps up to the podium and waits for both his music and the cheers of the crowd to die down. He looks down at a card and starts to read, his voice monotonic and not very inspiring.
Frank Lynn: Ladies and gentlemen, I’m out here now to present the 2018 Rookie of the Year award. This award recognizes the wrestler who debuted in 2018 and made the best impression on all of you, the WFWF fans. It is a recognition of talent that separates the average wrestlers from the true superstars of this business.
Frank pauses, letting the crowd react mildly as his dry delivery almost put them to sleep. He shakes his head and tosses the card away.
Frank Lynn: Screw this prepared speech crap. The Rookie of the Year is the best and brightest of a new generation, someone you all want to see succeed against the old guard. They won’t wait around for the torch to be passed; they’re going to go out and take it! Just ask past winners like Lucas Crowe and… well… me. From Rookie of the Year to International Champion! The sky is the limit for the Rookie of the Year!
Now the crowd is getting a little fired up as Frank’s delivery is more animated.
Frank Lynn: So who debuted in 2018 with such force that they cannot be denied?
The crowd is one step ahead of Frank as many start chanting “MESH!”
Frank Lynn: The nominees for the 2018 Rookie of the Year are: Ryan “Needles” Payne (*boos*)
Shuggy (*mild cheers*)
Tyler Draven (*mixed reaction of cheers and boos*)
and Mesh (*a deafening roar and chants of “MESH!” that force Frank to pause*)
And the winner is…
Frank takes out an envelope and carefully opens it, taking his time to read the name on the card to himself first and show it to Daphne, who makes a sour face showing she clearly does not approve.
Frank Lynn: Say it with me on three… one… two… three… MESH!
Mesh’s music plays over the Staples Center P/A system. Mesh wastes no time making her entrance, bouncing onto the stage like Tigger on meth with Anna Ahriman a few steps behind her, a smile on her face as she watches Mesh charge towards Frank Lynn.
Frank has his hand extended to shake Mesh’s but she ignores it and jumps into his arms, wrapping her arms around him and hugging him so hard he turns red. Daphne scowls at Mesh. Anna scowls at Frank. The crowd cheers wildly for their hero, the blue haired pixie who has added yet another accolade to her short but successful WFWF career.
Frank gently pries himself loose from Mesh’s bear hug, whispers into her ear “Congratulations. You deserve it.”, and hands her the card with her name on it and the trophy. He steps away and pushes her towards the podium so she can talk, waves to the crowd, and exits backstage, seemingly making sure to bump into Anna on his past her. Daphne remains on the stage, still burning a hole through Mesh with her death stare.
Mesh: Oh my Goodness! Hi everyone!
The crowd isn’t quieting down anytime soon.
Mesh: Umm…wow. I wasn’t expecting this. Like, at all but it wouldn’t have been possible without you.
She points at the crowd.
Mesh: The Good Vibe Tribe made this childhood dream possible and I want to say, from the bottom of my heart –thank you! Thank you to each and every single one of you here tonight that’s ever supported me and cheered for me.
Special shoutout to Jenny Broom! Pink Panda Squad! And to Denise Adams! I love you all infinitely!
I want to thank my trainer – Dennis Cleaver who’s in the crowd right now. I want to thank him for teaching me everything I know. When I first started training, I was super pudgy and not very strong, but he helped me get in shape and he taught me how to be a wrestler. I’ll always be thankful for that.
Cut to the former MMA fighter, sitting in the crowd applauding his most famous trainee.
Mesh: I also want to thank my best friend, Kat. Some of you here may remember her as Katharsis aka Spitfire aka The Brimstone Slugger.
A thunderous roar from the crowd once the name "Katharsis" is mentioned.
Mesh: I know she hates those names, but I love them! I want to thank her for being my absolute rock. She has been there for some of my worst days, but she’s also been there for some of my best days. She’s my dose of reality when I’m in my own little world. To me, she’s the greatest pro wrestler that ever lived. I don’t know what I did to have met someone like her but all I know is that she’s amazing and one of my favorite people ever. I love you boo!
Long, dramatic pause.
Mesh: I also want to thank Frank Lynn.
Loud cheers from the crowd while Daphne smirks.
Mesh: It’s no secret that I’m not your typical WFWF wrestler but Frank is one of the good ones. One of the few that’s been nice to me. He’s always giving me advice and he always looks out for me. I’ve had the honor of wrestling him in what was only my third match in the company -
Daphne Velasquez: Which you lost, chica!
Mesh looks over at her opponent off to the side with a stern look on her face.
Mesh: Anyway, as I was saying – I got the chance to wrestle Frank in my third WFWF match ever and it was great, despite losing. One positive thing I can say is that at least now, I’m a world champion, just like him –
Daphne Velasquez: Don't think for a second that this makes you in anyway Frank's equal! He's a champion! You're a joke!
Mesh can’t ignore the constant interruptions of La Pantera Negra, a name that once meant something other but no more. She seems flustered.
Mesh: He...uhhh, Frank gives me the confidence that I need to believe in myself because trust me, I know I’m in over my head sometimes but for that, I want to thank him.
Her diamond eyes look out into the crowd.
Mesh: I lastly want to thank my mom.
Cut to her mom, who’s also in the crowd, beaming at her daughter.
Mesh: She’s also my best friend. She’s my biggest fan. I know how much she wishes that I never became a wrestler but I know that no matter what, she’ll support me because she is the best mom any girl could ask for! You want to know why I’m so happy all the time?
Because I have her –
Pointing at her mother, who’s starting to cry.
Mesh: To inspire me every day. Despite what certain…people think about me, my mom raised me to be strong. Not physically but mentally. She sacrificed so much for me and we’ve been through so much together that we have this bond between us that will never be broken.
Thank you so much, mama for everything you do, and I love you with all my heart.
An ovation for the Vanguard Champion and her mother.
Mesh: Now I’m sure the woman to my right here –
Pointing at her opponent.
Mesh: Wants me off the stage so she can go and rip me from limb to limb but let me tell you something…chica.
Mesh grabs the microphone from the podium and walks over to Daphne, getting right in her face.
Mesh: You can tear me apart and paint the mat with my blood for all I care but guess what? I’ll still get up.
Regardless of what happens in our match, I’ll still be here. Still here to annoy the hell out of you.
I didn’t say anything bad about you just because I….respected you too much.
But then it dawned on me: you wished death on me, why the hell would I look up to you now?
Beating Penny was the biggest win of my career –
Daphne Velasquez: Don't let this award go to your head chica. It's not like the competition was all that good. An incomprehensible fool who believes in aliens, a psycho with a needle fetish, and a criminal who should be locked up for assault and attempted murder!
Mesh: Stop interrupting me! Just shut up for a minute and let me talk!
At this point, Anna is getting…annoyed with Daphne and her jabs and starts mouthing off.
Daphne Velasquez: Control your new pet bitch. Frank is gone. This is between us. Keep her out of it.
Mesh: Don’t call her that!
Daphne Velasquez: Can't you see she's just latching onto you so she can get back into the spotlight? She's nothing without you, just a famous name that failed to deliver in the ring. A fool only her daddy could love.
That pissed off Anna who lunges at Daphne, but Mesh holds her back. Daphne, with a grin on her face doesn’t flinch.
Mesh: I know what you’re trying to do and chica…it isn’t working. I’m ready for this match. I’ve been ready for this match since Breakout. Just do me a favor, please? Don’t break your neck in our match. I don't want to be responsible for your hospital bills.
Daphne growls.
Daphne Velasquez: Enough talk. That's all you do. Blah blah blah... Diarrhea of the mouth! It's time to put up or shut up. Get into the ring and take the beating you have coming!
In a blatant act of disrespect, Daphne turns her back on Mesh and Anna and strides down the ramp to the ring. Without taking her eyes off her opponent, Mesh drops the mic as it thuds on the stage and follows.
Alecia Matthews: That’s some serious bad blood that has formed rather quickly between these two women.
Daniel Knight: I’m not surprised Alecia. Everybody knows women can’t get along.
An slapping sound is heard as Alecia lets Daniel know what she thinks of his last comment in a nonverbal way.
Daniel Knight: Ow! What’d you do that for?
Alecia Matthews: I did it for all women everywhere. And I’ll do it again if you don’t keep your asinine opinions to yourself and just call the match.
Daphne and Mesh are standing in the ring facing off while Anna Ahriman stands at ringside exhorting the crowd to louder and louder support for the blue haired pixie. A referee runs down to the ring as fast as his stubby legs will carry him hoping to get to the ring BEFORE the action starts.
Christa moves to enter the ring for introductions but Daphne shoos her away.
Daphne: Everybody knows who we are and why we’re here! We don’t need you!
A dejected Christa retreats back to her spot next to the timekeeper’s table. She has one job people! Its rude to not let her do it.
The ref slides into the ring and immediately signals for the bell.
DING DING DING!
The action starts off at a frenetic pace. It’s an incredible display of moves and counters as neither can land any offense. The back and forth defensive action highlights the athleticism of both wrestlers and shows how much film study they did as they seem to know what the other is going to do before they do it.
Alecia Mathews: This is amazing. Daphne attempts a high kick, Mesh somersaults under it, counters with a forearm, Daphne catches it, spins her around into a hammer lock, Mesh ducks under and reverses, Daphne grabs a leg and drops Mesh, goes for an elbow drop, Mesh rolls out of the way.
Daniel Knight: They’re moving so fast it’s hard to follow. Holy crap did you see that? Mesh just used her dancing skills to pirouette out of the way of a knee to her face and countered with a spinning back fist!
The fans are cheering wildly in appreciation of Daphne and Mesh, although clearly biased towards wanting Mesh to win. The back and forth moves and counters continues for several minutes, each close call accompanied by a loud “oooh” and “ahhh” from the crowd.
Finally, Mesh and Daphne back away from each other and stare, wiping at the many droplets of sweat running down their glistening bodies. The crowd gives them a standing ovation.
Daphne: You’re good but that doesn’t change the fact that: YOU! ARE! SOFT!
A loud chorus of boos, led most vocally by Anna Ahriman at ringside as she also makes rude gestures at Daphne. All of this of course mixed with paranoia induced glances towards the stage just waiting for Frank Lynn to show his face.
Alecia Matthews: Daphne is trying to get into Mesh’s head now with that same old argument that Mesh is too soft for pro wrestling.
Daniel Knight: Mesh does spend an awful lot of time hugging and crying compared to other WFWF stars like Drakz or Kyzer.
Alecia Matthews: I don’t think they know what a hug is. Maybe if they had been hugged more often they wouldn’t be complete @sshats today.
Daniel Knight: One of those @sshats is the best in the business. That’s what Daphne means about needing too be hard to succeed.
Daphne’s verbal taunting gets under Mesh’s skin.. or maybe she’s just trying to prove that she isn’t soft. Whatever the reason, Mesh charges widely at Daphne and tries to spear her into the corner. Daphne holds her ground and raises a perfectly timed knee to impact Mesh’s face. Mesh’s head rocks back violently and leaves her open to a series of European uppercuts and elbow smashes that drive her back into the ropes. Daphne runs the ropes and clotheslines Mesh over the top rope onto the apron. She follows it up with a brain buster to the ring apron.
The crowd is struck silent as Daphne begins a precise assault that combines the best of her lucha and strong style skills. Mesh is reeling, having run out of counters for La Pantera Negra. Soon enough, she stops fighting back and tries to scramble away, create some separation so she can rest and recuperate.
For her part, Anna Ahriman keeps her distance and provides moral support via clichés barely heard over the roar of the crowd. At one point, Daphne and Anna exchange taunts which leads to Anna searching under the ring, pulling out a table and setting it up next to the ring. Then she slaps it hard and yells at Mesh.
Anna: Here it is just waiting for you to use it Mesh! Put her through a table! That’ll teach her!
Daphne has none of it, dragging Mesh away from the table, beating on Mesh the entire time and capping it off with a reverse spike hurricanrana onto the floor. Then she tosses Mesh back into the ring before the ref can count either one of them out and resumes her relentless attack.
Alecia Matthews: What the hell is Anna thinking? Is she trying to get Mesh DQ’d for using a table?
Daniel Knight: When has anyone ever been disqualified for putting their opponent through a table? More likely, Anna thinks Mesh needs to stop being soft and really bring the fight to Daphne.
Alecia Matthews: So now Anna thinks Mesh is soft too? Is her return part of some greater conspiracy that also includes Daphne to turn Mesh into a sadistic b*tch?
Daniel Knight: Who knows? Just sayin… it’s possible. This is Anna Ahriman after all, daughter of a Satanist who brought an actual f***ing sword to the ring!
Alecia Matthews: You do have a point.. for once.
Back in the ring Daphne continues to beat Mesh from pillar to post, finding a way to stop every attempt by Mesh at a comeback. Daphne has Mesh sitting on the top turnbuckle. She climbs to the second rope and rains punches down on Mesh’s head, shouting between each strike “YOU!”, “ARE!”, “SOFT!”
The crowd tries to get behind Mesh, shouting some rather unflattering things at Daphne and then a truly deafening “LET’S GO MESH!” chant.
It works. Mesh has had enough. The expression on her face changes to one of pure determination as she drives a knee into Daphne’s abdomen. Then she leaps into a sunset flip, but instead of tossing Daphne towards the ring, she drops her straight down so Daphne’s head bounces off the top turnbuckle.
Mesh finds another gear and starts to go on the offensive, hitting Daphne with a Pelé kick, whip into the ropes for a flying cross body, and then landing a springboard elbow drop. She does for a pin but Daphne quickly kicks out.
Alecia Matthews: Mesh is mounting a comeback and the crowd loves it!
Daniel Knight: I’m surprised Daphne didn’t go for a pin earlier. She had Mesh down several times but couldn’t be bothered, preferring to dish out more punishment.
Alecia Matthews: All part of her plan to toughen Mesh up. And it worked because Mesh is looking pretty damn tough right now.
Daphne retreats into a corner trying to regain her senses. Mesh charges in and hits a brutal running back elbow that stuns Daphne. Then she lifts Daphne onto the top turnbuckle, climbing onto the top rope so she towers over Daphne.
Mesh yells out “For the Good Vibe Tribe!” which gets a huge response from the crowd. Then she jumps up and locks her legs around Daphne’s neck, going for a hurricanrana. The crowd is ready to make a massive pop but is silenced when Mesh remains locked around Daphne’s neck, her body having down helplessly as Daphne hasn’t moved. She reached down and grabbed the ropes to block the move!
Daphne stands up, shows impressive strength in lifting Daphne up over her head, then turns and drops her outside the ring… a power bomb through the table Anna had set up earlier!
The crowd is stunned by the reversal, their reaction a hushed murmur as Mesh isn’t moving. Daphne stands tall on the top turnbuckle and screams one more time: “SOFT! SOFT! SOFT!” This gets the crowd going and they respond with a boisterous “STFU!” chant.
Alecia Matthews: This is looking bad. Mesh could be seriously hurt.
Daniel Knight: Daphne has made her point. She should finish this now. I don’t think Mesh has any fight left in her.
The referee and a ringside doctor rush over to check on Mesh. Anna shouts for her to get up, always keeping one eye turned towards the stage in case Frank Lynn appears. Daphne watches from inside the ring, looking confident that she has just ended the match. The crowd watches on in silence, many praying for Mesh to not be hurt… to get up… to kick Daphne’s ass!
The doctor props Mesh up to check on her. She shakes her head, pushes him away, slowly gets to her feet, walks right past the referee ignoring his question as to whether she can continue, slides into the ring, stands up defiantly in the center of the ring, and ask Daphne “Is that all you’ve got?”
Daphne bows to Mesh out of respect, then squares up. The two exchange straight up haymakers as the crowd yells “Yes!” for Mesh and “No! for Daphne. The action slowly picks up in pace as they start to whip each other into the ropes to hit offensive moves. Unlike earlier in the match, this time neither has a clear advantage. For every move Daphne hits, Mesh gets right up and hits one of her own. Then Daphne gets up and retaliates.
The battle takes its toll on both and they start to go for pins. They both kick out numerous times as the crowd roars for each possible end to the match, then roars even louder as the match continues.
Alecia Matthews: There’s no doubt, Mesh is tough. Daphne has thrown everything at her except the kitchen sink and Mesh won’t stay down.
Daniel Knight: But Mesh can’t put Daphne down either. She is living up to her reputation, one earned all over the world but never here in the WFWF until tonight.
The action slows down a little as the wrestlers attempt more dangerous high risk moves that require perhaps a bit too much setup. Daphne gets Mesh on the top rope and to the shock of all in the building plants Mesh ito the ring with a top rope Spanish Fly, her best finisher. She goes for a cover and it looks like it is over.
1… 2…
Mesh kicks out! The crowd goes crazy!
Daphne is visibly shocked that Mesh kicked out of her finisher. That is not supposed to happen!
Mesh uses that moment of shock, kicks Daphne in the head and stuns her. Then she gets her in position with Daphne’s head between her legs. She takes a deep breath and hits the Raze (front flip piledriver)! Mesh covers Daphne’s motionless body.
1… 2…
Daphne kicks out… barely getting a shoulder up. Mesh slaps the mat once in frustration, then does what most wrestlers never consider and simply covers Daphne again, making sure to get a tight hold on both legs and put all her weight on Daphne’s upper body.
1… 2… 3!
DING DING DING!
The building erupts in the loudest pop yet in support of everybody’s favorite blue haired pixie!
Christa Adina: Ladies and gentlemen, the winner of the match… Your Vanguard Champion MEEESSSHHH!
Alecia Matthews: What a great win for Mesh. She looked down and out several times but managed to pull it out in the end. I doubt Daphne will be calling her soft anymore.
Daniel Knight: Indeed Alecia. Another great win for Mesh, the Vanguard Champion, the 2018 Rookie of the Year, and from the sounds of this crowd, the PEOPLE’S CHAMPION!
Mesh rolls off of Daphne and slides to a corner of the ring to sit against the ropes and catch her breath. Daphne gets up, refusing help from the referee, takes along cold look at Mesh, slides out of the ring pushing her way past Anna Ahriman and heads up the ramp.
After all this time, Frank Lynn finally appears, coming out onto the stage to give Daphne and Mesh a round of applause. Anna sees him and immediately tenses up but Frank makes no move towards the ring. He stands there waiting for Daphne to come to him, offers an arm to support her, and they both disappear backstage.
Mesh pulls herself to her feet and leans against the corner. Anna rolls under the ropes and walks over to Mesh, giving her a hug and whispering something in her ear.
Alecia Matthews: Much to Anna’s dismay, Frank Lynn only appeared long enough to help his manager back to her locker room. He said this match was none of his business and he meant it.
Daniel Knight: But also to her credit, she kept her word to Mesh. She didn’t interfere in the match and we had one banger of a show put on by those two ladies.
Alecia Matthews: Absolutely. And now you have to wonder, what’s next for Mesh? SuperBrawl is around the corner, and with who she’s dispatched, what’s next?
Mesh is handed her championship by the referee, who ducks out. Mesh goes to the middle of the ring, raising her Vanguard Championship high in the air, the fans cheering her name.
MESH! MESH! MESH!
Alecia Matthews: I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone, so quickly, come into the WFWF and garner the hype around them quite like Mesh.
Anna gets herself under Mesh’s arm and whispers something to her again, hugging her tight, Mesh as bubbly as ever.
…with her arms raised still, Anna comes out from the crook and grabs ahold of Mesh’s hair, bringing her down with two knees right to the bridge of Mesh’s nose, the Triple A doing its intended job.
Daniel Knight: WHAT?!
Alecia Matthews: NEVER TRUST AN AHRIMAN!
Mesh’s nose is bleeding badly at this point. Anna goes to her knees and hooks her arms under Mesh’s and locks her into a modified crucifix neck crank submission, causing more blood than normal to pour from Mesh’s nose. Anna lands punch after punch with her free hand to Mesh’s busted face.
Alecia Matthews: SOMEONE HELP HER! ANNA’S LOST IT!
As if on cue, the fans pop for a figure jumping the barricade and entering the ring and shoving Anna off of Mesh. It’s Mesh’s friend, Kat! Kat gets to her knees and starts to stand as Anna comes to and throws a handful of jabs to Anna’s temple, causing The Queen to stumble back through the ropes and to the outside.
Daniel Knight: Just in time, too. I was afraid Mesh was gonna pass out from that. What the hell was that display?
Anna backs up the ramp, pointing at Kat, and a slowly coming to Mesh, shouting…well, the FCC isn’t going to be happy with WFWF tonight, let’s just say that. Kat checks on Mesh as Anna goes through the curtains, followed by a camera.
Anna Ahriman: WHERE’S LILA?!
Anna is yelling that at every techie the WFWF has on employ until she turns a corner and sees Lila, with a bodyguard, right in her face.
Lila Sleater: What in the HELL was that, Anna?! I give you permission to have Mesh’s back at ringside, just to ease your own paranoia and you beat my God damn Vanguard Champion bloody?
Anna Ahriman: FORGET THAT BLUE HAIRED RAMONA FLOWERS B*TCH LILA. I got JUMPED by an audience member. I know she’s some friend of Mesh’s, but the point is, bitch ain’t got a WFWF contract. Your bodyguard there that was CLEARLY meant for me should go out there and do some citizen arrest sh*t. Y’all like abusing your authority on civilians, right big guy? Do me a solid and…
Lila Sleater: SHUT. UP. ANNA. Do you NOT UNDERSTAND the ramifications of what you’ve just done?
Anna Ahriman: You should be more concerned that a member of your signed talent was assaulted by a bystander during one of your televised performances.
Lila Sleater: …who do you think you are to try and play the victim card, Anna?
Anna Ahriman: I’m a f’n Ahriman. The only thing deeper than our drags are our pockets. So, how about I tie this place up in so much litigation for assault I have YOU sued, KAT arrested, and MESH tossed out as an accessory to assault?
Lila Sleater: …what…what do you want, Anna?
Anna Ahriman: If you want to keep your job, and the job of your Vanguard Champion, get that bitch who jumped me to sign a Hold Harmless Agreement for next week. She wants a fight? She’s got one. But I’m not about to put myself in legal jeopardy by destroying her outside of that ring, and that bell. Unless you want to live VERY dangerously, Lila, and try calling my bluff. You know my father…way too well.
Anna steps closer to Lila, looking down on her.
Anna Ahriman: He’s nothing in comparison to me. And you’re nothing without your position, and your money making champions.
Anna rests her chin and lips in her bloodstained hand for a moment, then removing it with a soaked smile.
Anna Ahriman: Make the decision that’s best for you, Lila. I’ll let you decide what it is.
Anna licks her lips again through her smile, washing away some of Mesh’s blood as she backs away and past the bodyguard, who she pats on the shoulder, leaving a nice little handprint on his black shirt.
Lila Sleater: Dammit….God dammit. I F***ING hate that family.
The crowd is in an uproar wanting immediate action taken against Anna Ahriman, definitely not happy that instead of being punished, she is giving orders to Lila, demanding what is tantamount to an unsanctioned anything goes match against Mesh’s friend Katharsis.
Alecia Matthews: That was… something. We’re going to take a short break so go hit the bathroom or fridge. You don’t want to miss a second of the main event.
Daniel Knight: And we still have one more Best of 2018 award to give out. Who will be the Superstar of the Year?!?! We’ll be right back after a few words from our sponsors.

We come back from several commercials and a SuperBrawl X promotional video to find Kay Fabe following Frank Lynn around the backstage area. He turns to speak to Kay as he walks with a purpose towards his destination.
Frank Lynn: I want you along just so you can see this and share it with the fans. This isn't an interview. Watch and listen only, 'kay Kay?
Kay Fabe: Whatever you say Frank. I'm a fly on the wall.
After Frank turns back to look where he is going, Kay gives the camera knowing wink to say “as if”. The reporter is looking for a scoop and obviously hopes Frank is about to drop on right in her lap.
A half minute later they come to Frank's destination, a locker room adorned with a sparkly blue star and the name "Mesh". Frank knocks on the door and waits. Finally it creaks open an inch or two.
Frank Lynn: Hi. You're Katharsis, right?
Kat: Yeah. What do you want?
Kat is brusque and obviously in no mood for company.
Frank Lynn: I've heard things about you, not all of them good, but you're Mesh's best friend and you sure as hell put a hurting on that Ahriman b*tch earlier. That's worth something to me. Anyway, I come in peace. I just want to talk to Mesh. No bullsh*t.
Kat: I don't trust you.
Frank Lynn: Why not? I lived up to my word and stayed out of it tonight. Now I'm here to see how Mesh is and offer a few words of friendly advice.
Kat: She doesn't need any advice from you.
Kat sounds like she is about to go off on a tirade but another voice from inside the locker room silences her.
Mesh: Let him in Kat. I want to hear what he has to say.
Kat rather reluctantly opens the locker room door wide and Frank walks in, followed closely by Kay Fabe who is making sure she doesn't get shut out of a potential scoop.
Kat rushes back to Mesh's side where she tends to Mesh's wounds. Kat is still outraged and on the verge of violence. Mesh looks dejected, disappointed, and definitely not her usual perky upbeat self. She looks at Frank with red eyes and runny makeup.
Frank Lynn: You don't have to say anything, just listen. First, this thing with Daphne is over. I've talked to her and I finally understand. She sees potential in you to be one of the greats. She also sees what she interpreted as a fatal flaw. When you get pushed, you don't push back. That's why she played the mind games with you. That's why she wanted the match. She pushed you. You finally pushed back. Daphne is satisfied that she's made her point. She won't be bothering you anymore. She did want me to tell you that she will be watching and if you need another lesson, she will teach it to you.
Kat scowls but Mesh stares her down with a smile.
Mesh: I knew it. She does like me!
Kat: Damnit girl! Stop it!
Frank Lynn: Your friend is right. Maybe in the long term you can forgive Daphne but it's too soon. If you learned anything from Daphne, it's that as Vanguard Champion and Rookie of the Year you are a target and everybody is going to come at you pushing all of your buttons trying to find your breaking point. You have to push back! I'm the exception to the rule here in that I let it be decided in the ring. Most others... well they're just as happy to jump you in the back, drag you to the boiler room, and act out their favorite Saw torture scene on you. Are you ready to cut your own foot off to stay Vanguard Champion?
Kat looks at Frank with mixture of anger and ?respect? Mesh has perked up but she continues to look at Frank with a serious expression and absorb each and every word he says.
Frank Lynn: I have the feeling you're going to have a lot of pushing back to do now that Anna revealed her true colors. Take what you learned tonight and use it. Show the entitled princess that she's all bark and you’re all bite. Kick her ass.
Kat nods in agreement.
Frank Lynn: And if you need any help you have my number. I'll gladly lend a hand if it means I get to put Anna in her place... again! Unlike Anna, you can trust me.
Frank turns and starts to leave, having said all he wanted and as much interested in seeing the main event as any WFWF fan. Before he can exit the locker room, Kat makes one last remark.
Kat: Mesh doesn't need your help. She has me, Katharsis, to watch her back!
Frank looks at the Mesh’s fiery friend and nods.
Frank Lynn: She most certainly does. I'll mind my own business if that's what you want but I'll be there for you if that's what you want. It's your call to make... quite literally.
Frank makes his exit and Kat all but pushes Kay Fabe out the door right behind him. Kay Fabe maintains her composure and turns to the camera.
Kay Fabe: Interesting goings on in the WFWF locker rooms. Could we see the last two Rookies of the Year working together against the heir to the Ahriman name? Only time will tell. And now back to Daniel and Alecia.
Alecia Matthews: Thanks for that intriguing report Kay. I can’t say I’m surprised by what Anna Ahriman did. It just sucks that Mesh was her victim.
Daniel Knight: Looks like Daphne wasn’t the only one looking to teach Mesh a lesson tonight.
Alecia Matthews: I’m sure we’ll hear more about it later but now it’s time for the final and most prestigious award presentation of the night: “Superstar of the Year”.
Daniel Knight: And of course, keeping with the precedent already set, last year’s winner will be presenting the award.
Alecia Matthews: Please. Please don’t let him win it again.
Drakz’s music thunders onto the PA and the audience reacts in kind with near deafening boos. His music continues to play but he’s still no where to be seen. It takes a good 15 seconds before finally he emerges and we see what was keeping him. Drakz struggles onto the stage holding the “Comeback of the Year”, “Match of the Year” and WFWF World Heavyweight Championship. Why he’s not wearing the belt around his waist is anyone’s guess.
Alecia Matthews: Did he really need to bring all of those with him?
Daniel Knight: Alecia, tonight is about celebrating the talent. Drakz is just proud of his achievements, that’s all.
Alecia Matthews: I swear to God, if he wins…….
Drakz puts the two trophies on top of the podium and slings the belt strap over his shoulder, all the while the crowd still telling him where to get off. His music stops but he has to wait a considerable while before it’s quiet enough to be heard.
He smiles. Of course. Then adjusts one of the trophies to make sure it’s centred, facing the camera.
Drakz: Hello Los Angeles.
Of course this elicits a response.
Drakz: As your Superstar of the Year for the last 3 years it only makes sense that I’m the one presenting this award…….again. I must admit it’s a much less star studded affair than last time. Did we have the budget cut or something?
Alecia Matthews: Christ. Get on with it.
Drakz: Anywho. I promised not to win this award four times on the trot so I refused to be included in the nominees, and honestly I probably shouldn’t be in there anyway, given that I only wrestled twice in the dying light of last year. Soooooo, your guess is as good as mine. But let’s not guess. Let’s find out shall we?
Alecia Matthews: Oh thank you Jesus.
Daniel Knight: How noble.
Alecia Matthews: Sure, whatever you like.
Drakz: The winner, and WFWF’s Superstar of the Year 2018 is………..
Only now is the crowd completely silent.
Drakz: My f***ing boy. Mr…..DAVID……BRENNAN!
Alecia Matthews: Well, like him or not, you can’t argue with that result. David Brennan was one third of the match of the year and arguably the most consistent high profile wrestler of 2018 until his retirement. How fitting that he’d win such an award as his swan song.
Drakz: I have here a prepared statement from big Dave, as he’s not likely to be within 100 miles of a WFWF run arena for the rest of his time on this ball of dirt.
Drakz clears his throat, unfolds a piece of paper and pulls a pair of glasses out of his pocket, putting them on.
Daniel Knight: Drakz wears glasses?
Alecia Matthews: There’s no lenses in those. He’s a f***ing clown.
Drakz: In accordance with the direction provided by my legal team, please arrange to have any due monies, accolades, or correspondences forwarded to the address on file with Talent Relations.
Drakz takes those very necessary spectacles off as quickly as he put them on.
Drakz: Poetry.
He then proceeds to screw the note up and toss it over his shoulder.
Drakz: Given that I unseated the f*cker in his retirement match though, I guess I’ll be taking this. Scoring the hat trick. Not quite as impressive as last time, but not to be sniffed at ‘ey?
Alecia Matthews: Oh for f*** sake!
Daniel Knight: Alecia!
Drakz: Well, I guess it’s main event time. Play my f***ing music.
One of the production monkeys is paying attention and obliges Drakz’ request, the screaming distortion of It’s a Lunken by MK7 playing loudly as Drakz walks to the ring while juggling his three Best of 2018 trophies and the WFWF World Heavyweight Championship belt. When he gets to the ring, he stops at the corner closest to the announcer’s table and carefully places the trophies at the base of the ring post. He climbs into the ring and prances around holding up the World Heavyweight Championship to a very loud negative reaction that manages to drown out his entrance music.
Drakz’ personal moment of triumph is interrupted as the arena lights fall dim and sparkles of purple, pink, and baby blue settle around the entrance way. Smoke fills the isle as the shrill of L7's Fast and Frightening damn near rips the speakers in two! Penny pushes herself through the entrance curtain, hooded up in her signature hoodie. She takes a moment to stand by the edge of the stage, pulling down her hood to reveal her pigtails as she kicks her feet and makes a mad rush down the isle. Slipping into the ring beneath the ropes, Penny charges up the up the turnbuckle and raises her left arm into the air, holding up a single fist as she turns to the camera, points to her own face and curses her ass off.
The crowd, pumped up from a great show goes crazy for Penny. She soaks it in with a smile for a few seconds, then hops off the turnbuckle and turns to face Drakz, her expression suddenly all business.
Christa Adina: Ladies and gentlemen, the following match is our main event of the evening…and it is for the WFWF World heavyweight Championship!
Introducing first the challenger. Hailing from Toronto, Canada… weighing 134 pounds… she is the "Velocity Grrrl" Penny Shaaannnnnnooonnn!
And her opponent… hailing from Leeds, England via Chicago, Illinois… weighing 226 pounds… he is Mr 8.5.1… The Streak Destroyer Destroyer Destroyer… The "God" Slayer… The Man the People Paid to See…
Christa pause to take a dramatic deep breath, her face showing relief that she is done with the damn nicknames.
Christa Adina: The current, reigning, defending WFWF World Heavyweight Champion… DRAAAKKKZZZ!
The fans shower Drakz with more boos, something they don’t seem to tire of. Drakz is unfazed. Who cares what the peons in the cheap seats think anyway? They don’t matter. Not even his challenger Penny, hot off the heels of a loss to the blue haired wunderkind Mesh matters. Only Drakz, his title, and his trio of trophies matters.
Alecia Matthews: That man is so damn arrogant.
Daniel Knight: Deservedly so. He called himself the “constant” of the WFWF and he’s not wrong. Name me one other wrestler who has had even a fraction of the success he has over the past five years.
Alecia Matthews: Puh-lease Daniel. Look no further than David Brennan, who did something even Drakz hasn’t when he held EVERY title in the company at the SAME time! Of course Drakz won’t acknowledge that though. He couldn’t even be bothered to acknowledge the other nominees for Superstar of the Year… and yes there were other wrestlers in the running.
Daniel Knight: Alecia, if you think Frank Lynn or Mesh had a chance then you are sadly mistaken. Last year was Brennan’s year… and only because Drakz was away for most of the year. Drakz is the man! And so humble of him to decline his own nomination for Superstar of the Year to make way for Brennan. He’s a role model!
Alecia Matthews: You know that’s bullsh*t. Drakz was also nominated for the award and he lost to Brennan! The fans spoke with their votes and they said Drakz was NOT the man.
Daniel Knight: Well we could debate this ’til we both turn blue in the face but we don’t have the time. We have a match to call.
Alecia Matthews: So we do. The introductions are done and the referee is ready to go, as are Drakz and Penny Shannon. It’s a blast from the past ladies and gents! Get your popcorn ‘cuz this is gonna’ be good!
Daniel Knight: Finally, something we can agree on.
With Drakz and Shannon standing on opposite ends of the ring, the referee calls for the bell. Both combatants instantly up the guards as they start to circle one another, neither one prepared to make a move until the opening presents itself. Shannon motions for a shoot kick across the legs, but Drakz side-steps and knocks Shannon in the bridge of the nose with an open-palm strike. Penny quickly retreats to the corner, leaving Drakz standing in the center of the ring with a smile on his face.
Penny takes a deep breath and keeps herself close to the ropes. Drakz, maintaining his composure, mockingly waves Penny to come his way. A small amount of blood has started to trickle down Shannon’s nose. Giving herself a moment to wipe it off, Penny returns to the center of the ring with her guard up. Shannon feints a shoot kick to the shin and advances with a stiff forearm across the jaw. Drakz nudges back as Shannon reaches in for a headlock, gripping tight. Drakz fires shots into the mid-section, but Shannon tries to maintain her ground in the center of the ring. Drakz grabs a handful of Penny’s hair, tugging tight that Penny begins to loosen up her grip. Slipping an arm through her mid-section, Drakz manages to wriggle free and quickly grabs Shannon by the waist and sets her up for a backbreaker. Shannon now, manages to wrap her legs around Drakz’ legs and trips him down with a head-scissor rollover. Both wrestlers return to their feet and charge towards each other- Shannon with the lariat, but Drakz ducks it and follows-up with a hard step-up knee, knocking Shannon to the canvass. Drakz with the cover.
1.. 2… Penny kicks out.
Daniel Knight: There’s no doubt from everything Drakz has said and done tonight that he knows he is the man in the WFWF. He’s showing exactly why so far in this match, drawing first blood, countering every move by Penny, and going for the first pin fall.
Alecia Matthews: Yes Daniel we all kno whow great Drakz is. Thank you for reminding us. but what I’m seeing a veteran in Penny Shannon who shook off all the ring rust last time out against Mesh and is going blow for blow, move for move with Drakz. This is far from over.
With a grin on his face, Drakz watched Penny roll to the side of the ring and mocked her by pointing how close she was to losing so early on. In turn, Penny, crutching the bridge of her nose, rose from the canvass and stayed by the corner. Frustration setting in now as the challenger glares at the champion. Shaking off the effects, Penny locks eyes with Drakz and collide in the center of the ring in a tie-up. Drakz forces himself, trying to push Penny down to a single knee. Thinking quickly, Shannon stomps on the foot and locks Drakz into a wrist-lock. Penny follows with a series of shoot kicks to the chest. Penny twists over and wrenches the lock again, and transitions into another headlock. Drakz takes a handful of Penny’s hair and tries to push her off, but Penny keeps herself where she is and transitions into a waist-lock trying to push her weight into Drakz now. Drakz manages to break free and reverses the waist-lock into one of his own, quickly, Penny takes him down with a snap mare and follows up with a hard dropkick across Drakz’s back. Penny hooks the legs with a pin of her own.
1… 2… Drakz kicks out.
Alecia Matthews: See Daniel. Penny is on top of her game and bringing it to Drakz. He may have kicked out of that pin attempt but Penny made a huge point. She is not to betaken lightly, not even by the almighty Drakz.
Daniel Knight: Oh Penny has some moves but Drakz is the Mr. 8.5.1! He slays gods and destroys streaks. Penny is in way over her head. Drakz doesn’t look worried.
Penny locks a sleeper hold on Drakz- doing what she can now to neutralize the champion. Drakz with both arms raises, trying to summon the power to push Penny off him. Quickly, Drakz fires a hard right across Shannon’s jaw. Penny continues to wrench the hold, but Drakz begins to fire one shot after another into Penny’s jaw, that even eventually the Velocity Grrrl lets go. Penny stumbles away and the Champion returns to the vertical base and rushes at her with the lariat. Penny ducks the attack, but Drakz bounces off the ropes and takes Penny down once again with another hard lariat across the back of the head.
Penny clutches the back of her head and tries to roll to the center of the ring, but Drakz dominates, takes Penny by the leg, and drags her back to the center of the ring. In turn, Shannon tries to push herself back to the vertical base. But her position leaves her compromised to Drakz, who reels her in, catches her and sends her flying overhead with a brutal tiger suplex, spiking Penny in the back of the neck. Drakz with the bridge.
1… 2… Penny kicks out.
Daniel Knight: That’s the champ right there at his best. He’s dominating Penny now and this is close to being over. Maybe Penny should have kept her mouth shut instead challenging Drakz so soon after her return.
Alecia Matthews: She kicked out. She’s still in this. Never underestimate the Velocity Grrrl.
Penny tumbles back on and clutches the back of her head again. Drakz takes a handful of hair, but Penny counters with a European uppercut. Drakz does not let go and Penny hits another uppercut and another, until Drakz releases the hold. With some space, Penny rushes over and fires a dropkick right into the small of Drakz’ back, the rush of which sends him tumbling out of the ring. Quickly, Shannon rushes to her feet, scrambles through the ropes with a dropkick and connects with Drakz, knocking his back against the guard rail.
Both wrestlers now spilled on the outside; Drakz against the rail, clutching the small of his back now, as Shannon lies close by clutching the back of her head. Still holding onto the back of her head, Shannon rushes to her feet and follows up with a hard chop across Drakz’s chest. In turn, Drakz follows with another open palm, but Shannon ducks it and begins to fire forearms into his face. The referee rushes to the outside to try to separate both combatants away from each other. Shannon tries to motion the referee away, but falls into Drakz arms, who spins on his back and drops her into the apron with a t-bone suplex.
Alecia Matthews: C’mon ref! Do your job. Get them back inside the ring. Start a count. Do something.
Daniel Knight: He is. He’s watching the best in the business do his job. Penny is clearly outclassed by the champ. Drakz is clearly out to have some fun now before he puts Penny out of her misery.
Alecia Matthews: And you called that bastard a “role model”. For who?
Again, the referee tries to get between Drakz and Penny attempting to get them back in the ring. Drakz pushes him aside, grabs Penny by her hair and slaps her across the face. He scowls at her.
Drakz: You went and got your eye fixed. That’s not good. I WANTED YOUR EYE PATCH PENNY!
Drakz slaps her again, then slams her head into the apron. Temporarily stunned, Penny slumps to her knees. Drakz grabs one of his trophies and waves it in Penny’s face, again mocking and taunting her.
Drakz: Do you see this Penny? It’s a trophy… MY trophy! I’ve got quite a collection going. I really wanted to add your eye patch to my collection. I guess I’ll just take your eye instead!
Drakz yanks Penny’s head back by the hair and stabs at her eye with the trophy. Before it makes contact, the referee manages to grab the trophy and wrench it free from Drakz’ grip. The ref looks pleased as he steps away from Drakz and hands the trophy to Christa Adina… ?for safe keeping? We’re not sure how that works but luckily Drakz doesn’t bother Christa or the ref. He simply reaches behind him and picks up another of his three trophies.
Drakz swings the trophy at Penny’s face, trying to impale it in her surgically repaired eye. Penny gets an arm up and partially blocks the blow, the trophy impacting her forehead an inch or two above her eye and once again denying Drakz what he wants.
Alecia Matthews: What a disgusting display. Drakz is willing to maim Penny all over again just so he can take her eye patch for his trophy collection.
Daniel Knight: You have to admire his commitment. He knows what he wants and he won’t stop until he gets it.
Alecia Matthews: Ugh, just listen to you. Who signs your paycheck? Lila or Drakz?
The ref runs over and grabs the second trophy away from Drakz, this time immediately going over to the third and final one still sitting by the ring post. He grabs that one as well and gives both to Christa.
Drakz makes no move to regain his trophies (much to the relief of Christa Adina who is thinking “I am not paid enough for this sh*t”). Instead Drakz smashes Penny over and over with hard punches to the face. The ref jumps onto the ring apron and starts a very loud and fast count.
1… 2… 3… 4…
Drakz pauses his attack and shoves Penny into the ring, then enters the ring himself taking his time to climb the steel ring steps as if he enjoys hearing the chorus of boos from the fans.
Alecia Matthews: Finally, the ref has gained some sort of control.
With Shannon still sprawled out on the canvass, Drakz takes Penny by the hair and sets her up to the vertical base but the Velocity Grrrl fires back with a hard shoot kick across the side of the head. Drakz stumbles back. Thinking quickly, Shannon runs up the apron and rushes up the top rope. Shannon waits for her opening, but the moment Drakz turns her way, she takes air with a flying clothesline, but Drakz side-steps leaving Penny to crash and burn in the center of the ring.
Alecia Matthews: No Penny no! Don't crash and burn!
Daniel Knight: That’s why she’ll lose. She takes risks and makes mistakes. Drakz doesn’t.
The Champion, still clutching his back now, makes his way to Penny and keeps her down with a series of well-timed stomps to the back. Shannon now trying to find the will to crawl towards the ropes to push herself up, but Drakz grabs her by the back of the tights and drags her back to the center of the ring.
Penny still tries to crawl her way to the ropes, but Drakz casually positions himself right over her. Penny pushes herself off her knees, but Drakz uses the position to strike a hard cross face forearm against Penny’s nose. In turn, Penny cries in pain, which inspires Drakz to brutalize her with another hard shot. Blood begins to drip down Shannon’s nose once again. Grabbing a handful of hair, Drakz drives his knee into the small of Penny’s back and begins to wrench. Penny’s body is slowly being contorted against its will, when, without warning, another brutal crossface lands right into Penny’s nose. Drakz begins barking at the referee and demands the official to check Penny’s pulse. Drakz fires another crossface and Shannon goes limp. The referee takes her hand.
Daniel Knight: That’s a champion right there. He doesn’t even need to pin or submit his opponent. He’s beating Penny so bad that she will have to quit.
Alecia Matthews: Penny will not quit. She can’t.
1… Penny’s arm falls. 2… Penny’s arm falls again. 3… Penny raises her arms once again, avoiding a ref decision to end the match.
Alecia Matthews: Told you. Penny won’t quit!
Daniel Knight: She should have. Now Drakz gets to hurt her even more.
In turn, Drakz fires another stiff crossface into Penny’s face and shoves her hard into the canvass. Drakz hooks the leg once again for the cover.
1… 2… Penny kicks out.
Shannon’s body jerks as she tries to turn herself on her side; her face a bloody mess. Drakz now, still calm, walks over Shannon and violently grabs her by the head. Following a hard open palm strike against the jaw, Drakz gets Shannon’s limp body and motions for the Rolling Cold, but Shannon reverses with an inside cradle.
1… 2… Drakz kicks out.
Alecia Matthews: The roll up counter by Penny actually surprised Drakz. He didn’t expect her to have any fight left yet there she is almost getting the upset victory!
Daniel Knight: I’ll admit it, Penny is doing better than I expected. Certainly better than she did last time out against Mesh.
Drakz explodes back into the vertical base, makes a rush for Shannon, who trips him down with a drop toe hold. Quickly, Shannon explodes back to her legs, makes the charge and knocks Drakz right in the forehead with a vicious baseball slide; the back of his head jerking back violently. Shannon rushes for the ropes and tries to push herself up, but the damage from the multiple shots to the head have begun to take its toll. Penny stumbles for a moment, but shakes off the effects as she takes a breather against the turnbuckle, just waiting for Drakz to stumble back to his feet. Penny makes the run and motions for the Liberty Cap, but Drakz catches Penny in her tracks and hoists her on his shoulders. Quickly, Drakz motions for the Needle Driver, but the Velocity Grrrl wriggles free from his grasp, positions herself behind Drakz with a waist-lock and makes a rush for the ropes. Drakz catches the ropes, causing Penny to ricochet and roll over her back. Drakz turns around and motions for the lariat, but Penny ducks it and hits Drakz with an explosive Northern Lights Suplex. Shannon rolls over and hits a second Northern Lights Suplex. Spinning her hips on last time, Penny cries into the air and hits Drakz with a final suplex and bridges the pin. 1… 2… Drakz kicks out.
Alecia Matthews: An incredible comeback by Penny. What heart! What determination! She could do this. She could upset the champ!
Daniel Knight: All luck. Drakz is still in control. It’s his match to win. Look! Penny used up all of her reserves. This time she really has nothing left in the tank. She’s done!
Penny rolls away, and she cannot believe it! Completely spent, she stumbles over to bottom rope, just trying to recover. Shannon tries to pull herself up, but Drakz takes the opening to knock Penny in the face with a running knee. Drakz takes Shannon by the arm, and pulls her in for ripcord lariat, damn near decapitating Penny. Shannon dangles in Drakz hand, barely hanging on for dear life now as Drakz pulls her into his shoulders once again for the Needle Damage, but quickly, Penny reverses the drops Drakz into the canvass with a hurricanrana. Drakz scrambles back to the vertical base, but Shannon rushes over and drives him into the canvass with a step-up Liberty Cap and the crowd explodes. Penny hooks the leg.
Alecia Matthews: Another amazing reversal! Nobody gets up from the Needle Damage so good for Penny.
Daniel Knight: Drakz will kick out. I know he will.
1… 2… 3!
DING DING DING!
The arena shakes from the crowd’s exuberant reaction. The man who said he couldn’t be beat just got pinned! The crowd loses its collective sh*t! Not even Christa can contain her joy as she makes the all important announcement.
Christa Adina: Ladies and gentlemen… the WINNER of the MATCH and NEEEWWW WFWF WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION… The VELOCITY GRRRL… PEEENNNNNNYYY SHAAANNNNNNOOONNN!
Daniel Knight: Oh no. No. No. No. That did not just happen.
Alecia Matthews: It did Daniel. IT DID! We have a new World Champion and HER name is PENNY SHANNON! Oh happy day!
L7’s Fast and Frightening hits the speakers once again as the sold-out crowd in the Staples Center rush to their feet. The referee rushes over to Penny with the belt, but the Velocity Grrrl is too broken to realize what had just happened. Penny takes the belt into her arms as blood, sweat, and tears begin to run down her face.
The crowd warms her heart with a special chant:
THANK YOU PENNY! THANK YOU PENNY! THANK YOU PENNY!
Shannon manages to make it to her knees as she clutches the WFWF Championship title in her arms. Stumbling to her feet, the Velocity Grrrl rushes to her feet and holds up her title. Penny rolls to the outside and rushes into the arms of her fiancée, Mary. Both women hold each other tight, as Penny drops her head on Mary’s shoulder, still in tears.
But before the celebration can continue, an irate and out of control Drakz pries Penny away from her fiancé and shoves her back into the ring. Penny tries to fight back, but the damage has been done. Within moments, Drakz places her in position and knocks her down with the Rolling Cold. The former champion quickly transitions and locks Penny into the Channel 9.
Alecia Matthews: That dirty rotten stinking son of a bitch! Security! Get security out her now! Stop this!
Daniel Knight: I ask you Alecia, which one looks like a world champion and which one looks like a corpse in the morgue?
Alecia Matthews: Go to hell Daniel! This is wrong and you know it!
Daniel Knight: I know no such thing. All I see is a champion who got robbed and is doing something about it.
Alecia Matthews: Enjoy hell Daniel. You’re going to be there for a damn long time.
It is madness ringside as officials rush to the ring to separate Drakz from Penny, but nothing can be done. Drakz wrenches into the Channel 9, holding tight as Penny falls limp in his arms. The efforts of security are useless as the only reason Drakz releases his hold on Penny is that she is out cold.
Security back away from Drakz. There have been many scary sights in the history of the WFWF but the look on Drakz face at this moment may be at the top of the list. He lets Penny’s limp body drop to the mat with a sickly thud. He motions for someone to give him a mic. Nobody in or near the ring has the balls to say no to Drakz so he quickly has a mic and starts to speak.
Drakz: Congratulations Penny, now you have something I want. I didn’t get your eye patch. I didn’t get your eye. I will take this. It should be mine anyway and you obviously aren’t in any shape to take proper care of it.
Drakz grabs the WFWF World Heavyweight Championship belt that up to a few minutes ago was rightfully his, grabs one of the security men and uses their shirt to wipe off some of Penny’s blood that dripped on the center plate, then throws it over his shoulder… all accompanied by the boos of a crowd that is so very very close to storming the ring and tearing Drakz limb from limb.
He looks down on Penny, stomps on her head one more time, and then adds insult to injury as he spits in her face. The crowd can’t control itself and a rain of trash falls on the ring. Security scampers away to avoid the half empty beers, the water bottles, the popcorn buckets, balled wads of paper torn from program guides, and one slightly worn combat boot that some fan no longer wanted.
Drakz gives no f***s. He walks up the ramp with the title belt still over his shoulder, stopping on the stage to turn and wave the belt high one last time.
Suddenly the crowd noise goes from boos to cheers. The belt is snatched from Drakz’ hand by Lila Sleater, surrounded by more security guards for her protection.
Lila Sleater: Yoink!
Lila smiles sarcastically at Drakz.
Lila Sleater: You know damn well that's not how you get this belt. Bring your ass to Vegas and do it the right way... if you can.
Lila turns and leaves, security forming a protective circle around her so Drakz is left to watch her leave with the belt.
Daniel Knight: And that is the end of the show folks. Be sure to join us next time for Sin City Showdown live from Las Vegas!

And there it is, the first show of 2019. I think it came together quite nicely and definitely want to hear from people as to what they think of the modified match style as well as the overall show. Many thanks to bad guy™ , Drakz , Markw , @ballparkb0b , & veronicaaaahhhh for helping out with the awards presentations, segments, and main event. A big welcome back to Joe Bishop, even if was only a brief appearance to make us all feel inferior. Congrats to the new champ: Velocity Grrrl Penny Shannon! Up next is Sin City Showdown in Las Vegas. Sign ups will start in a day or two. We're gonna start nailing down the SuperBrawl matches soon so everybody should be ready to be in either a match or segment(s) or both.

David Brennan: Streak Destroyer Honestly man, you deserved it even more two years ago when we didn't do awards while you were the ONLY champion in the fed for most of the year. Doesn't matter how long I hang around here, I don't think I'll ever see a run like it again.

Excellent show!
Legit LOL'd at the Christian Kane bit.
Best part was Drakz lugging around all the gold throughout the show. Him putting on glasses with NO LENSES was comedy gold. Disappointed at no David Brennan appearance, CM Poor .
#zmeysnumberonefan
Gotta admit, I'm shocked that Mesh beat Daphne.
Joe Bishop!!!!!
I was not expecting the main event to turn out the way it did! OMG! Great match and great moment for Penpen! <3 Big ups to King Richius for writing this show, it was action-packed and soooo much to look forward to until the next one. I liked the summurizations of the matches - easy to read without describing every little detail. I'm going to try this method the next time I write matches. Admittingly, it threw me off at first in the Zmey/Needles match. I thought that a chunk of the match was missing or something haha.
My personal favorite line of the show:

In spite of what the incomplete post-show credits would have one believe, I wrote my prepared statement.

Anyway, the show...
...keep the format. It was a lot easier to get through with the abbreviated matches, and I don't think it detracted from the finished product at all.
I liked the format for the awards being slotted in between matches and segments. That was better than my approach and I'm glad to never have to coordinate that sh*t ever again.
Mesh is on a tear. I'm glad to see her come out on top in that feud. It's the ending that would have been booked on TV for real, so I'm glad to see it pan out the way it should. If I were Frank Lynn, I'd be clutching my title, Ciampa style. I know Mesh is starting to feel the pressure of this place, but my personal opinion would have you take a couple shows off, rather than dilute yourself by doing the old "side character takes a match" bit, which is where it seems like this is going. I dunno if it's just to give Anna something to do or not, but I'd hate to see a good thing get derailed.
I guess it's moot since I willfully stepped away from booking and judging, but with no disrespect toward Mikes, that main event took about as hard a left from the direction I would have voted. I'd be really, really, really surprised to hear that that was the result of a 2-0 unanimous decision.

I thought it worked but I'm glad we trimmed it down to just four awards. Trying to get 8 or 9 segments together if we did the full slate of awards would have been an organizational nightmare. Going forward, I think we'll stick to these abbreviated matches except for the main event. They're easier to write and as you said, easier to read.

To be honest with you, I was shocked to see that Mesh won. I was convinced that the lack of growth in my RP was enough to give Daphne the win but guess not. This win certainly gives me the confidence I need heading into SuperBrawl. Thank you for the match, King Richius.
In terms of the side character taking a match, I've been planning on bringing Kat in and making her a part of the WFWF since, well - joining. It would be really...awkward if Kat just watched her best friend get her face shattered again and not do anything about it. It goes completely against Kat's character. I can definitely see your concern but I'm going to take a page out of The Book of Kyzer on how to handle two characters so I don't exhaust myself again, especially now with all this momentum behind Mesh.

You didn't beat Frank. But seriously, good job. I got all that I wanted out of the mini feud, had fun writing Daphne for a one off, and hopefully helped Mesh grow some as a character.

Follow up, because I asked when the card went up and still feel none the wiser...when did Penny vs. Drakz become a title match? It feels like that, and, in turn, this, should have been put up with a bit more fanfare if that were to ultimately be the case.

It feels like that, and, in turn, this, should have been put up with a bit more fanfare if that were to ultimately be the case. The match was made a title match by me after reading the segment where the challenge was issued and answered. I get the credit or take the blame for taking what was said in that segment and interpreting it to mean Drakz wanted the title on the line against Penny. As for any hype, I felt it got the proper amount for what amounted to an open challenge spread over two shows, much like Lynn/Draven for the International title a few shows back. Now that we are doing the social media threads again, I can see it being a place for the WFWF to provide more hype for matches as well as the banter between wrestlers and reports from dirt sheets. I dipped my toes into that area with a few "official" posts from the WFWF for Resolution and will continue the trend going forward. Personally, I'm always hype for three things that happen every month: the posting of the card, the posting of the RPs, and the posting of the show. I look forward to them the same way I look forward to a new episode of The Walking Dead. I temper it publicly for fear of being more annoying than inspiring.
