My mom and I were discussing this earlier - if the whole world were believing in or preaching something bizarre or delusional, would you stick by your guns or begin to question yourself and wonder if the world is accurate? Basically the question is, do we believe what we believe because society believes it, or do we truly believe what we believe because we believe it’s accurate?

Excellent question, and a great topic. I hope this doesn't get locked.
And I hate to be "that guy", but I bet there will be lots of replies based on religion.
Like I said in the "Straight edge" topic, I live my life my own way. I don't preach on about how I live it, I just live it in a way that feels right to me.
There is a lot of stuff in the world today that is a hot topic or trending. I choose to ignore most of it because I just don't care about it. And how can I form an opinion on something that I don't care about?
This has been another rambling from a grumpy old man. I'm going to go eat my applesauce now.

I have very strict beliefs, not religious, but ideals I stick to, nothing and nobody would ever change them, I will not be dictated to how to think simply because some in society dont like it

I stick to my guns. I question everything. I have never been one to eat what others are serving.

I believe in a few "conspiracy theories" which instantly means to you're average Joe I'm a crackpot.
Just because a group of people believe one thing doesnt mean you should follow the herd just cause that's the majority. I still believe Hornswoggle > monotone Chris Jericho (i forget the year) despite getting heat on here because jericho is some kinda god to some people.

I believe what I believe no matter what.
Maybe it makes you crazy, maybe it means you're the one that isn't crazy.

I have certain beliefs that most people would disagree with but they aren't significant enough to really impact anybody else's life.
I'm only 25 but as I get older I find myself more and more sticking to my guns than appeasing other people.

I would say that initially we get our beliefs from society and how we’re raise. As we grow and experience more of the world, we developed our own beliefs. Some may be in line with what most of society believes, some may differ. I try to keep and open mind and understand that what I believe may be different for others due to different circumstances or experience. That’s the main reason I try to not pick sides politically. In a lot of cases I can see some sort of valid argument on both ends.

I try to be fair in these type of instances, but as you know most of the time it's hard because a lot of people are stubborn and will battle and fight over the stupidest things in any category. Going by who I have in my avatar pic, and who I seem to defend/support on facebook and twitter amongst my social media friends, personal friends from years back, and family. I'm the black sheep but i'm not phased by it as I give everyone there fair say.

I think personal beliefs come from a variety of sources, your upbringing, interactions with people, how extensive your knowledge of history is, etc. Societal beliefs seem to be shaped by culture and who controls the culture, like Hollywood or the news media or the “education system”. Societal beliefs are not necessarily based in reality. The same people who mock Religion A will fall over themselves to tell you we must respect Religion B. There’s a lot of hypocrisy and lies being spread in society today. I think you should take in as much info as you can and educate yourself. Stay open to new ideas, but be wary too. Not everyone is looking out for your best interest.

No one should be clinging firmly to any belief. We should be forming opinions and setting policies based on the best evidence available, not superstition or what color t-shirt your tribe wears.
And when evidence shows something is contrary to what we believe, then we should adjust our beliefs accordingly, not stubbornly stick to them.
