So today in 1987, WrestleMania III happened. And what a spectacular event it was. I was six years old at the time, but my father watched wrestling so I do remember some of the build up to that show. My father was actually at it, since he drove bus, and he got to drive a bus load of people to the event and got a free ticket to see the event live.
But for years after that, everyone still talked about the magic that was Hogan vs. Andre. I know Savage vs. Steamboat stole the show, but it was Hogan vs. Andre that made the event.
Is it a shame in a way, that the kids, and teenagers now, will never truly appreciate the magic that was Hogan vs. Andre that night in Michigan??
I still say to this day, that Hogan vs. Andre was the biggest main event WrestleMania ever had! I honestly don't think any two stars can top it.

My father drove a bus for NJ Transit. And yes that was probably the biggest main event at WrestleMania. If not the biggest then definitely the second biggest. The only other main Event that could possibly top it is the first because of the build up and main stream press it was getting.

I started watching wrestling in 92 so never had the chance to see the build up as it happened. I don’t remember when I first saw the match/event but the stadium feel (I seem to remember camera flashes going off), the commentary with Jesse saying bigger than the Rolling Stones and the Pope!! And the way the match was laid out made it feel like a big event. I’ve seen some of the build up to it. The pipers pit angle was story telling at its finest.
That being said, as big as a fan as I am, and this match definitely falls into the greatest time in wrestling (87-92), I don’t think even I get what a huge deal it was.
As far as two bigger stars in the main event, to me, Rock v Austin was the closest.

Monumental.
Hogan vs Savage & Austin vs Rock @ WM17 were also colossal but nothing tops this. Might watch it later actually.

Hands down my favorite Mania of all time. Andre/Hogan is definitely the biggest main event in Mania history for build alone.I remember renting the big clamshell VHS many times back in the day.
This is an event I can watch over and over and never get tired of it.

Agreed. Hogan VS Andre is the greatest WrestleMania main event of all time. I was watching the product at the time and still have the VHS tapes where the angles on Pipers Pit were taking place. The second that Bobby Heenan walked out with Andre I got goosebumps. It was surreal and you did not see that coming!!
You can have your Hogan/Warrior, Hogan/Rock, Punk/whoever/, Lesnar/Goldberg, and whatever else you wanna throw at the wall. Nothing will be bigger then Hogan Vs Andre.

Felt real back in the day, now you know what it is.
I remember watching it on tape late 87, though I already knew the result of it beforehand of course. Epic storytelling and even though it wasn't a great technical match, who cares, the finish was what made it.

Hogan-Andre sold the event. Savage & Steamboat might have been the better match but that match wouldnt fill the Silverdome no matter when/how you booked it.
IMO Hogan-Andre is the greatest "match" from a recognition standpoint but the storyline I wish could have been worked better. Its not that it was bad but it just felt rushed. The Hogan-Savage storyline is by far IMO the greatest wrestling storyline of all time

That match is like Babe Ruth calling his shot in the World Series.
A moment bigger than anything before or after it that will forever be immortalized as the precipice of the sport.
I'll be at MetLife this Sunday, but plan on revisiting this one beforehand.

when you look back....WM4 was a disappointing entry between the epic storylines that built towards 3 & 5.
Mega Powers just edges out Hogan/Andre for me but that's in no way a knock on it....the MegaPowers storyline is one of my absolute favorites ever. Its just incredible.....the build and all the small things....excellent.

Biggest match of Hogan's is when he beat another 7ft guy with just one finger

I got into Wrestling in 1989, but I got the VHS I think in 1991. Here in the UK (Scotland to be exact) we had a store called What Everyone Wants and for some reason, they had a crap ton of the LJN Benidies. I remember getting them all and the ring, but my dad has since informed me the ring they had was not an official WWF one and as soon as he said that it all came flooding back. It was a white and red "American Wrestling" ring and was pretty crappy, but I played the hell out of it with those bendies.
Anyway, I would always play "WrestleMania III" with those bendies as I loved that VHS tape so much. Hogan and Andre really was a spectacle as cheesy as it sounds it was more than just another match it really was something special.

It's crazy that when you think of the Mega Powers story, it pretty much starts on that SNME show in September 1987, when Hogan saved Savage from the Hart Foundation and Honky. That story line was like 20 months in the making! Unbelievable when you look at today's story lines.

Starting with their random matches together in the early/mid 80s to the Mega Powers formation, split, personal lives, into WCW all the way up to Savages Hall of Fame induction.
