From what I've seen there seems to be a lot of hate on JBL's Title Reign, even saw people comparing him to Jinder Mahal which I believe is a terrible comparison because I think JBL's title reign was a lot better than Mahal's. He was able to cut promos, build up storylines, have decent matches and played the heel role a lot better than most wrestlers. At the time I hated that he beat Eddie for the title, but after thinking about it JBL being champion made sense because there was no top heels at the time and Smackdown already had too many babyfaces. Had Eddie stayed champion he'd end up not facing any top heels in the company and his reign would have been a total flop.
What do you guys think, were you a fan of JBL or did you think his reign as WWE Champion was a total flop like Mahal's?

At first I was a little skeptical considering how he was a tag team guy for majority of his career up until that point but he won me over with how great he was as the arrogant rich heel.

He was a poor mans HHH and I didn't buy into his rich man gimmick.
The problem for me was when I tried to take him serious I just saw Bradshaw. He spent most of his career as a tag team wrestler and then suddenly he received an unexpected in your face push.

it surprisingly worked because Bradshaw is very easy to dislike. from his appearance at one night stand to his feud with Eddie G, he was well handled.

Up to that point in my life, wrestling was my end-all be-all. I stopped watching Smackdown for 9 months. I just could not wrap my head around the fact that not only was JBL was champion, but he had a faction that consisted of guys who I believed couldn't even main event a Velocity taping, but I was suppose to take them seriously. No disrespect to JBL, he was able to garner legit heat and was a good heel. But so many years as an underneath guy killed it for me.

The WWE Championship is/should be considered the most important title in wrestling. There's a handful of guys that I look at who held that title and ask...."why?"...JBL is on that list. His character was solid but he really shouldnt have been WWE Champ IMO
(Vince, JBL, Jeff Hardy, Sheamus & Jinder)

Honestly, think about how many guys on the roster have had it now. From 1985-1992 we had (off the top of my head): Bob Backlund Iron Sheik Hulk Hogan Andre Randy Savage Ultimate Warrior Sgt Slaughter Undertaker Ric Flair Bret Hart Currently on the roster the following guys have been champion: Brock Lesnar Undertaker Triple H Seth Rollins Roman Reigns John Cena Randy Orton Sheamus Big Show Kane Jinder Mahal Kofi Kingston Daniel Bryan Bray Wyatt Jeff Hardy The Miz AJ Styles Kevin Owens There's probably a bunch more I have forgotten because the titles change hands every few months. I don't even know if the ugly red belt or ugly black belt is the belt with the WWF lineage or WCW lineage.

Loved it. When he first feuded with Eddie and won it, I was outraged because I was still in the childish "JBL doesn't have enough movesets or workrates he can't be champion" mindset. But he won me over by being so damn annoying and funny whenever I caught SmackDown.

Better than people give it credit for. He was a GREAT heel that did his job to a tee. Great gimmick, great on the mic, and was a heel that you loved to hate. My only gripe is that he didn't have many great matches during his reign. The issue was the match quality. His best match came after the reign against Cena at Judgement Day 2005; that was a great I Quit match

JBL's title reign was decent, all things considered. I wish Eddie had a bit of a longer run. He often gets credited for drawing the wrong kind of heat but I disagree. We're supposed to hate heels, not think they're "cool". Sometimes people draw the wrong kind of heat for whatever reason, be it a hasty push, poor mic skills or poor in-ring skills. Say what you want but JBL put some hard work into it.

He asked about JBL’s reign and that is what this thread should be about. So let’s keep it to that.

The only reason JBL was WWE Champion for so long, was because Triple H didn’t wanna work Tuesdays!
... Oh and because he’s one of the greatest heels and mic workers in WWE history. I wish they’d give JBL a stable, or pair him with some people who need a mouthpiece.

I hated it. He breaks up with Farooq, turns heel, gets a rich cowboy gimmick, and then an instant main event push. All because the company liked him, not because he was good. I remember EVERYONE hating on this in 2004 and saying how someone more talented like Sean O'Hare should be feuding with Eddie over the title. John's push is a classic example of WWE playing favorites.

I'll never understand why O'Hare is so beloved for over a decade off the back of a few vignettes. I actually liked it at the time, I just wish it didn't come at the expense of Eddie. It also was a necessity move to a degree (push not title reign). Following Mania XX Angle went down with an injury and Vince moved a lot of the established guys from SmackDown over to Raw, really leaving Eddie out to dry with no credible opponents. Anyone with some credibility as a top guy on SmackDown besides Eddie (Booker T) was being fed to the returned dead man 'Taker.

I’d also assume it was a “paying your dues” situation. Much better than giving Kofi the title randomly because “11 years and the crowd randomly cares about you”.

Ehh while I agree that I didn't care for the Kofi push, they're pretty similar. Who says Kofi didn't pay dues in those 11 years? Also, comparatively, JBL was in the WWE for only 10 years at the time of his title reign and had no fanfare compared to Kofi's hot streak.

Almost identical. I’m saying Bradshaw was far more over as a heel than Kofi was prior to running that gauntlet when Mustafa Ali went out. JBL was so hated by the fans and other than being a little sloppy in the ring, the guy was great as a heel. He was the right guy to go with at the time.

Yeah it should be more like 15-20 years, but then that would overwhelm marino13 and the modern board. So I figured 5 years would be most fair.
