It was 23 years ago today that Hulk Hogan made wrestling talked about again. In an era that wasn't booming well, all it took was two guys from the WWE to jump ship, and have the number one good guy in wrestling at the time go heel and form the NWO to make wrestling 'cool' again.
What is everyone's memories of that??
Did you watch it live?? Did you have any ideas as to who the third man may be??
For me, I did not watch it live. I had no idea who it was, but my friends and I talked about it being a WWE guy. My one friend thought maybe the 123 Kid, but he wasn't a big enough name to be a surprise. But Hulk Hogan?? That was a big enough name!

Same as the OP I didn’t watch it live, never got into WCW until a couple of years ago.
What a great angle it was, looking back. From what I can gather, Hogan was pretty stale and wasn’t making an impact. Turning him heel and putting him with the hottest acts at the time really gave his career the boost it was needing.
The NWO blew the WWF out the water - and deservedly so.

I remember watching it live and my grandpa was over the house watching with me because we were having a BBQ and he told me it was going to be Hogan. Sure enough he was right

I didn't watch it live, but when I heard I wasn't that shocked, Hogan wasn't on TV for a while and he was really stale at the time - he needed a change. As for who I thought it was going to be, me and my friends were thinking someone else from WWF was going to jump ship, we thought it was going to be Sid. At this point, Sid hadn't been on WWF TV since early 1996 so we thought it was going to be him. Plus, I believe Nash and Hall said that there third guy was going to be huge so I was thinking height/weight not name recognition.

I missed most of the PPV but got home in time for the last match to see it live. The Hulkamaniac in me was pissed, but the wrestling fan in me knew it had to be done. It was the greatest heel turn of all time.

I watched it live.I remember having my speculations on the 3rd guy with Hogan crossing my mind but I said to myself no way do they turn him heel. The way the crowd reacted along with the announcers going nuts definitely makes this the greatest heel turn of all time.

Also the shock value, the revival of Hogans career and the impact on the wrestling business made it the greatest heel turn.

If Hogan got cold feet like it's been said and they went with Sting it still would've been an impactful turn but nowhere near the magnitude of Hogan turning.
I'm glad in the end Hogan went along with it as like others have said it changed the biz forever. The early portion of the NWO angle was gold. Nobody could've pulled it off like Hogan did IMO. Great job all around on this one.

I watched it live on PPV. lol. And I have to say people like to say Heenan blew it. But I totally disagree with it. Heenan’s whole career as an announcer was taking shots at Hogan and his character so what he said was totally in character and I was actually surprised/shocked when Hogan was the third man.

Bobby Heenan ripped on Hulk Hogan so constantly, I still think he legitimately hated Hogan.

Heenan always said Hogan cant be trusted and was no good and in the end he was right as evident at this event.

I remember it like it was yesterday. It was strange....I only started watching Nitro regularly about 3 weeks before Hall showed up. In Ireland it was the "Friday night wars" Raw was on Sky Sports & Nitro on TNT. I used to tape both and watch a double bill of wrestling on Saturday Morning. At the time? I had missed Hall & Nash from WWF TV after their losses at IYH: Good Friends..Better Enemies....and I was wondering where they were. I had also missed Bret Hart who had been absent for even longer since WM12. When the whole Outsiders thing was rumbling along I was seriously excited.....loads of folks I knew at the time were following it and nobody suspected Hogan...everyone here thought it was Bret because of his then 3.5 month absence from TV. I was convinced it was Bret too...I mean who else was it going to be. Hogan wasn't even on my radar LOL. Never suspected Savage either. As Eric planned we were convinced It had to be someone else like Hall & Nash....someone who had recently departed from Vince's employ. TNT showed the PPV after a few days over here but at the time I had started a summer job and forgot about it so I settled down to watch the previous 2 eps of Nitro then BATB 96. I was blown away by the Hogan turn. Heenan's comments went over my head PJ too because he was always ragging on Hogan even though they were all against the Outsiders. the birth of some GREAT times as a wrestling fan.
