I haven't watched wrestling in forever, but today I saw an instagram post with a bunch of the biggest WCW and WWE stars from the late 99s and the caption said "pick your stable". This made me realize that somehow in 2001/2002 WWE really missed an opportunity to officially create what would have been a monumental stable consisting of HBK, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, HHH, and/or Sean Waltman.
Obviously WWE had various iterations of these guys together as the nWo and DX, and everyone knew they were buddies/a backstage crew,...but WWE they never capitalized on these 4-5 as a distinct faction. They could've had their own iconic merchandise and it would've worked as both a heel or face faction given how much main event talent was on the roster back then and with the brand split. I think it also would've been successful because it would have been a "novel" stable rather than a half baked reincarnation of the nWo or DX. Heck when they split up it could've turned into an nWo vs. DX battle.
The only caveat to such an idea would be that it may have prevented or delayed the formation of Evolution, but then again it may have been a catalyst for the forming of Evolution and/or a natural rival to the group emanating from HHH's dissatisfaction/greed to be the top guy. Another interesting aspect would be that the existence of such a stable could have also been used to treat Brock Lesnar as more of a modern Goldberg-type face character rather than the back and forth face/heel turn booking he had in 2002 and 2003.

I don't think it'd work. A lot of egos would have turned it into the nWo before the nWo was a thing. It'd also be stuffed with some of the top stars. I think a good stable needs clearly defined tiers for its members. The Kliq stable would have Michaels, Razor and Diesel. That's three main eventers plus 1-2-3 Kid and Hunter. Doesn't work on paper for me.

I think it would have worked if the WWE at the time had WCW money to throw around.
My friend and I always said that if Nash was still with the WWE in 1997, that he would have been Rick Rude's position in DX.
But I think once Austin got popular, Vince would have had to have the Kliq stable either break up or disband, or at least lose. But maybe he wouldn't, since I doubt Hogan would have went heel in WCW, and there would have been no NWO.

In 2002 it wouldn't have worked...HHH was on his own course and would likely have nixed any involvement. It was he who broke from DX in 99 and when Vince(it was Vince BTW) reformed DX in late 99 to be HHHs heel stable he disliked it. The next stable that HHH would endorse would be Evolution.....and he was probably right.

nwo was an established brand in the wrestling world. was known for hogan, nash, hall mainly. they did that right.
then nash got injured. hall got into the drinks. so any chance at seeing a kliq after nwo got destroyed pretty quickly anyways.

Had Hall and Nash never left for WCW, I think some form of the Kliq would definitely have been an on screen group some time between 97-99. The original DX would likely have been HBK, Hall, Nash, and HHH.

Yeah had Hall and Nash not left for wcw, I definitely think the Kliq would have been an on-air stable. Even though they never were, they actually have a page in the wwe encyclopedia.

Interesting....Here's one for you....do you think we would have seen a DX if 1) Hall & Nash hadn't left 2) The nWo hadn't happened, 3) WCW hadn't took off into the stratosphere 4) Vince hadn't been forced to wake the f*ck up and realise it was 1997? I genuinely don't think we would have.....Vince would have just plodded along. The Kliq may have been able to push him along a touch but nothing like what the outside pressure from WCW caused.
