So I have been watching Raw episodes from 97 and have reached the King of the Ring qualifiers. As I understand it, HHH was supposed to win the 96 tournament but that was pulled cause of the Curtain Call incident.
In the 97 qualifying rounds, Triple H was disqualified in his match against Ahmed Johnston us got another opportunity against Crush, replacing Vader. The storyline that went with it was that the ref had misled HHH in his first match by telling him he could only advance through pin fall or submission but was ultimately eliminated by dq. As the storyline goes he was given another opportunity so he wouldn’t take legal action against the WWF.
Was there a reason they went with that storyline? Did Vince get cold feet about Hunter winning the tournament? Just seemed a pretty random angle to have.

I remember reading the final four was originally Vader,Savio Vega, Ahmed and Goldust with Vader going over. With Vader going out with an injury plans were scrapped with them changing the brackets up and having HHH go over in the end.
It makes sense as when Vader came back he was put into a title match with Taker at the next IYH. Makes you wonder if they would've turned Ahmed heel if the original plans happened with Vader winning.
In the end though HHH was a better fit for the King role than Vader would've been. so in that sense it worked out for the better. It was a dumb storyline though for sure with the legal action stuff.

The night after he won king of the ring didnt he say that he didn't get the opportunity to win the previous year? He had a qualifying match vs Jake Roberts in 96 that he lost.

Yeah he was interviewed by Vince and said he didn’t get the opportunity because of Vince’s politics. I took it as a reference to the WWF changing their mind on HHH due to the curtain call.

Yeah but kayfabe wise he did get the opportunity so that was kind of funny. So for the people who didn't get it and remembered that, it probably was confusing.

HHH was the better fit for sure and I was always under the impression it was always gonna be him. The Vader idea puts it in perspective as the whole legal action angle seems like a storyline that was thrown together last minute.

I get that wrestling was coming more out into the open but the casual fan is what makes or breaks the company and inside references serve no purpose and make no sense to the casual fan, who don’t follow every bit of news that has happened in the last few years

Where did you read this? I have heard that Vader was considered to win KOTR in 1996, but have never heard that about 1997. He had pretty much run his course in WWF by then. He only got the title match at Canadian Stampede in July as a replacement for Ahmed Johnson, who got injured.

I do recall the whole Ahmed heel turn with him getting injured with Vader being his replacement but makes you wonder if Vader was in the tourney would he have won it.Maybe like as a rebuild for em.With Vince who knows lol but it's a good what if scenario.
