Wrestling Memories: SummerSlam 1992
As a guy who has been a WWF/E fan since 1989, I have lived through a lot. I used to post quite regularly on here many years ago and I thought I would try and start again. I decided looking back at some of my memories of shows, wrestlers, live events, merch and so on would be fun and hopefully spark some discussion on here.
I have decided that I am not going to do any major research for this and try and keep it as much from my memory as possible.
To start with I want to talk about SummerSlam 92! The SummerSlam we thought we would never see and certainly a SummerSlam I never thought I would go to!
You see earlier in 1992 I went to not just one, but two WWE shows. Here in the UK, the WWE was white-hot at this time and on their European Rampage Again Tour, many places got two shows instead of one. Glasgow was a city that got two shows, so on back to back nights, I went to see the WWE. What is crazy about this is that my parents bought me tickets for just one night, but I actually won a set of tickets in a contest run by a poster magazine called Sporting Superstars here in the UK. I had to say who my favourite wrestler was and why. I said Bret Hart was my favourite because he was a brilliant wrestler and a cool dude in pink. These two nights could be a story in themselves actually!
Anyway, I knew the when SummerSlam was announced to be in London I had to at least “ask” my folks if we could go. I knew it was a long shot as I had already been twice this year (as well as in 1991) However, despite living in Scotland, we have family in Cambridge that we would usually visit once or twice a year so I used that as a way to try and soften the massive ask I was doing.
Surprisingly, they said yes and my dad managed to score two tickets for SummerSlam 1992. I was super excited and could not wait. I would finally get to see The Ultimate Warrior live! As his match with Randy Savage at WrestleMania was my favourite this was something I was very excited for. The whole build-up to the show was excellent and I vividly remember the atmosphere outside the stadium being really cool.
The actual event is one of my all-time favourites, but as a kid, I had a hard time seeing it. You see the only tickets my dad could get were on the floor and we had to have been at least 20 rows back. As a smaller kid, if it was not for the screens, I really would have struggled to have seen anything! Still, it was an amazing experience and one strange thing I remember was how cool it felt when it went from day to night as it helped with the atmosphere.
The match between Savage and Warrior was amazing, even if the ending was disappointing. Just seeing the Warrior run out and actually being able to see him standing on the ropes was really cool. This along with the Gold Spiked Legion of Doom were two major highlights. Also, another thing that never really gets talked about is Bret Hart. While the promotion and even now people say this was all about Davey Boy. I can hand on heart tell you that Bret Hart was just as popular as The British Bulldog on this night.
I was very lucky that my folks agreed to take me, especially as I had already been twice that year. I must say being able to tie this in with visiting family in Cambridge certainly helped. As I had got a ton of merch at the two Glasgow shows, I was allowed to get a t-shirt and a programme (which I still have to this day) and that was more than enough for me.
