Why does this Survivor Series have Grand Finale match? and didn't they continue it into the Survivor Series next events?
also was this Ax's last match with wwf?

The Grand Finale match was them trying something different.Shame they never brought it back as I really liked the concept.
And yes this was Ax's last hurrah in the company. You could tell when he came down to the ring he had that facial expression like'' I cant wait to get outta here''.

I loved the Hogan, Warrior and Tito Santana babyface team in the Grand Finale match. They didnt continue with it because they were phasing out the Elimination Matches altogether after 1991.

Yes this was Ax's last WWF match, he was supposed to start working in the office or as an agent with the WWF but it fell through so I believe he went back to Japan and worked some shows there, I think this was also around the time the whole issue started between Bill and the WWF over who owned the Demolition name. As for the elimination match, I liked the idea but it didn't need to be done again. However, I was listening to the Brother Love podcast and he said that he thought the original concept of the match was to all surviving members from the teams (DiBiase, Martel, Warlord, Hercules, Roma, Warrior, Tito, and Hulk) battle it out in a battle royal of some sort to determine the true sole survivor, with one person winning at the end - not two like they did. If they did this concept again I would definitely like that, that ending makes much more sense.

What makes it especially sad is that just two PPVs prior he was so full of energy and one of the top most popular guys along with Smash. WrestleMania VI looked like there was no end to Ax and Smash as a team. I know Ax did alright on the indy scene and I believe got a full time job as a teacher but he was a guy who should have been moved to a backstage role. I don't see him as a major "yes" man for Vince McMahon but with his knowledge and lifestyle (drug free) he could have helped a lot of guys maybe more than we would think.

I can see why they went the elimination route as I'm sure Vince wanted his top 2 babyfaces (Hogan/Warrior) standing tall which is what happened in the end.
The battle royal option does sound intriguing though. I would've been all for it if they went that route.

Yeah, Prichard said that Hogan must pose at the end, plus he didn't want to put Hogan over and not the Warrior and vice versa.

I personally didnβt like the grand finale. I would have been all in favour of a battle royal instead.
But this was an excellent event, gobbledygooker aside!

I have the PPV of this event, and even with the Grand Finale match - and the Gobbledy Gooker act - the PPV ends at like 2 hours and 20 minutes!! That was kind of unheard of in that era for a PPV to end so early.

The length being so short is really confusing.
I get the Gooker segment and an extra match can cause other matches to be shorter but the train wreck Slaughter-Volkoff match was ridiculously short and rushed. Not that it was s great matchup but the eliminations were occurring within seconds of each other.
Even the other matches were relatively short compared to previous years.

LOVED the finale match! really wish they did for 1989 as well:
hogan, warrior, rhodes, beefcake vs. savage, earthquake, bravo, perfect
but also like the idea of a battle royal too.
like others said, by 91 the roster was depleting and they went with a single match main event even, by 92, they gave up on the team matches pretty much.

Ax and Smash are an example of wrestling done right. Neither were anything great in the ring and I was never a fan, but character, look and presentation used to go a loooooong way in wrestling.

I freaking loved this show as a kid. Seeing The Ultimate Warrior, Texas Tornado and LOD team up was awesome. Then at the end seeing Tito Santano who for some reason I always loved as a kid, getting to tag with Hogan and Warrior was really cool too.
It is just a really entertaining few hours of wrestling and the kind of show that is perfect to fire up if you are in the mood for something light and fun to relax with.
The big match at the end as cool as I thought it was as a kid I always found it strange how they never exactly said how those final teams were picked. If I remember right there is a bit where Monsoon says to Piper aboyut writing stuff down in regards to what the teams will be, but that was really as close as we got to seeing any kind of "strategy" to the final teams. I get it was just good guys vs bad guys, but imagine if every survivor got their name put into a pot and then we just gfot two random teams, I think that would have been cool. Still, I say that now, but as a Kid I thought it was awesome just having Warrior, Tito and Hogan take on all the bad guys.

Tito Santana was a mid card jobber by that time but it was a huge rub just being a partner with Hogan and warrior
